Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby TF-DVD7050 7-Inch TFT Portable Tablet-Style Portable DVD PlayerCustomer Review: COBY, is this really you? Summary: 5 Stars
Ok. First off, I have to say, I've only owned this for a few days, but I felt I had to write a review. I originally bought a DUAL XDVD-180 a couple of weeks ago. I gave that unit a really good review after only a few days as well, and it turned out to be TOTAL junk (the review has since been deleted). Never, and I mean NEVER, buy that unit. I'd go into detail, but I'd just end up getting mad over it. To make a long, painful story short, I'll just say the thing overheated and froze an hour into any DVD I tried to play.
I'm only reviewing the COBY TF-DVD7050 this early, because I can tell by the build quality, that it is obviously better. I'm glad I returned the faulty DUAL XDVD-180 to Amazon and bought the COBY. I can't even believe I'm saying I'm glad I bought a COBY, since they are usually notorious for producing junk.
This unit offers the best bang for the buck that I have ever seen in a DVD player of this sort. It feels extremely well made (with some metal parts even) and seems very durable. The unit seriously reminds me of a Panasonic Toughbook in some ways, although I doubt it's THAT well built. It is, however, the toughest portable DVD player I've ever felt.
The unit came with a headrest mounting bag. It came with two sets of headphones, and has two headphone jacks on the unit. It plays SVCD, VCD, DVD-R, DVD+R, and J-PEG. It came with a tape player adapter that allows the player to be heard through your car speakers (the unit does have its own speakers though). It also has a picture frame style, retractable stand on the back to hold it up on a table for easier viewing. The big surprise about those particular features is that, they aren't even listed in the product description. Yes, that is correct; those features are in addition to everything listed in the product description.
Everything that is listed in the product description is included, and works extremely well.
I also love how this unit comes with a battery, which makes it handy for flights. The 30 dollar more (and major piece of junk) DUAL XDVD-180 didn't even come with one.
The only possible con I can come up with is that, the LCD screen isn't the sharpest I've seen on a portable DVD player, but it's still really good.
So, unless this thing just stops working all of a sudden, like the DUAL XDVD-180 did, the COBY TF-DVD7050 is the best possible deal ever for a TABLET STYLE portable DVD player.
At a mere 150 dollars, you can't go wrong with it.
I'll update my review on this surprisingly great unit in about a month, but for now it looks like COBY has a big time winner on its hands. Who knew?
Customer Review: A perfect traveling companion. Summary: 5 Stars
I spent quite a bit of time researching portable DVD players. I am concerned with quality; as well as price. This tablet style DVD player was a perfect traveling companion for my 4.5 and 1.5 year olds; as well as for myself. I turned it on about 2 hours into the trip; as the coloring and snacking ran its course. Our trip from central Maine to Delaware took approxiamtely 12-13 hours. We stopped for 2 short stretch breaks and one longer run around break. Once we got back in the van; I would have them do other things, then I would turn the DVD player back on. The girls were able to do the entire trip both ways without any major meltdowns!
This Coby DVD player was a wise and worthy investment. The price is low campared to many others I researched, but had the quality I wanted. The only part I would improve is the volume control. It is not adjustable from the remote. This player only had a couple of freezeups. I wiped the DVD off, replaced it and the player resumed without any problems.
This player came with many accessories! It has a car adapter cord, a regular power cord, an adequate internal rechargable battery, an over the seat hanging case, two sets of headphones and a few other adapters.
I purchased a between the seat viewing case; as my two girls were sharing it. None of the cases/holders are made for tablet style DVD players; so I improvised. I added a strip of maximum strength strip velcro to the top of the player and attached it to the back of the case/holder. It was 3" long by 2" high. Let the adhesive cure overnight, and it will not come loose. I took it off and on many times. The volume control can be easily reached in this type of case/holder. You cannot change the volume when the player is in the case they provide. I would have used their case if I didn't have 2 children sharing it.
Warranty: I did purchase the one year extended warranty; as many of the reveiwers suggested doing so.
I would highly reccomend this portable dvd player. It is not perfect, but for the price; it is a quality player from Coby. One caution - the screen will scratch easily. I keep ours in a soft fleece bag; in the traveling case.
Customer Review: Great unit for the price Summary: 5 Stars
I thought maybe 4 stars because the display isn't as clear as other things I'm used to watching, but then I figured I can't really compare this to the display in a plasma TV or a laptop.
unit is very nice and light, feels solid. Even with the battery the weight is negligible.
The stand built into the back is adjustable - I hadn't noticed that in the description, but it's useful to let you adjust the viewing angle for best picture.
Volume was a surprise, I hadn't expected sound to be quite so good on a small inexpensive unit. Headphones give good volume, one of the few devices I have now that 50% volume is actually loud enough to listen to.
controls are placed well and have a good feel to the buttons. It by no means feels cheap - feels well constructed and gives the impression that it will be around a while.
The up/down visibility of the screen is very reminiscent of a laptop without a wide view display, washed out as you get a higher angle to the top, and darker as you get a lower angle towards the bottom, but side to side is phenominal, so having kids in the back seat with this in the middle will still allow a great picture to people on both sides. Headphone jacks on each side was a good design idea as well.
Picture controls aren't too extensive, but the brightness actually takes the picture to a white-out state, so the default 50% mark is just about right, so you won't have to have it in torch mode to get a clear bright picture.
My stress test is my 2 1/2 year old son's reaction to watching his favorite DVDs on it - Animusic 1 and 2. He loved it, so since this was purchased for car trips with him in the back seat, it's a winner all the way around.
For the price, it's a steal. Even shipped it 5 days earlier than their estimate.
Customer Review: a great deal Summary: 5 Stars
For $132 sitting at my door this DVD player is a great buy. I bought for my car so that my daughter could have hours of entertainment while taking a long trip. This player fits that bill perfectly. It is truly a turnkey solution since it includes the case/bag, ac charger, dc power cable, battery (proprietary) 2 sets of headphones and even an output cable to connect to another monitor. The very decent quality bag/case hangs on the head rest of the seat in front of the viewer. The image is great for what it is and audio quality is good with out headphones. I did read quite a few reviews of the product where people were not happy with the internal speakers. My daugher is 19 months and still too young for headphones by my estimation so we opted to use its internal speakers and she was quite a happy customer for the whole trip.
The only things I could find that I did not like were the following:
1. You must remove the player from the bag to change the disc. From the front seat in my car (2005 Acura MDX) that is a little tricky but still very do-able. The interal battery is good because you can remove the unit and get the disc started running on batter then put it back in the back for your passengers viewing pleasure. With that said you must unplug the power to remove it from the bag.
2. The player takes a long time to initially read the disc so you sit there for a while waiting to get things started.
I'm still giving it 5 stars as it pretty much exceeded all of my expectations at $132. You just dont find many electronic items that are provided ready to go out of the box. Good job Coby.
Customer Review: So far so good! Tips to share when buying... Summary: 5 Stars
I did a lot of research before buying this item and determined that this was the right product for me- I simply wanted a good, inexpensive dvd player for the car to entertain my 1 1/2 year old. Just received this item, so can't rate it's longevity yet, but wanted to share a couple of tips! #1- BUY the warranty! Sure it's another $20-something on top of the price of this thing, but if you read the reviews, these tend to die early on- with the warranty you can have it replaced for free when that happens. #2- The screen does look like it will scratch pretty easily (as the reviews state)- I looked online for those film screen protectors people are writing about in reviews- the only item I found specifically for the Coby was on ebay and they wanted $10 plus $5 shipping for it- a piece of sticky plastic! I had a box of "laminating sheets" laying around that I picked up at my local Marc's store (closeouts/discount)- the box says the stuff is for self laminating photos, id cards and the like- it's just sheets of sticky plastic that you cut to size and stick on whatever you want to protect- sound familiar? I paid $1.99 for a box of 50 9x12 sheets- a lot less than what they want on the internet! I cut one to size and seems like it will work perfect to protect that easily scratched screen! I'm guessing you can pick up this stuff at your local WalMart... So between my warranty and my screen being protected, I'm crossing my fingers that we will be happy with this unit for a long, long time!
