Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Coby CVE92 Isolation Stereo EarphonesCustomer Review: Colby wipes out the competition (and saves the world economy) Summary: 5 Stars
There are better earphones than these Coby's (normally a brand I dismiss at first site). In fact, I've had two earphones valued at over three hundred-fifty break on me--irreparably, for all practical purposes. And I've lost a forty-dollar pair. Beginning to get the picture? All of these little critters are easy to lose and break, regardless of price or pedigree. As a result, having several Coby's on hand for traveling purposes or simply intense physical labor is far from the dumbest idea. In fact, the only better one I can think of is some of the generic phones I've picked off Ebay for less than three bucks, incl. tax and shipping. But for phones costing around five bucks, these Cobys are only marginally inferior to the very high-end models (every slight improvement--even undetectable ones--costs the consumer sums of money totally disproportionate to increased quality). As for sound, these phones easily trump out some other phones I own--for example, J-Buds and Skull-Candy--going for twice as much if not more. In fact, the only phones selling in the single digits that compare to the Colby's in range, sensitivity, and detail are the low-ends made by Sony and Panasonic (but remember that comparing the "bud-style" phones that hang from the ear's outer membrane to phones that insert into the ear's canal is apples and oranges. On the other hand, the bud-style phones can be more convenient, not requiring as much fussing over the size of the silicone or foam tip. In fact, both Sony and Panasonic make phones that are somewhat of a compromise between the two styles: they hang from the ear like buds but are "stabilized" by a speaker that only partially enters the ear canal.
So there's no need to hesitate picking up a pair of these for five bucks, especially if you have Prime--unless you're after the very possible best in-ear phones available, in which case my choice would be the Sony MDR-EX700LP phones (one of the pairs that I broke).
Back to the Coby's, you'll discover when you get the fit of these established that they're full and very present in the mid-range, adequately deep in the bass, and crystalline and shimmering in the upper register (the Zildjians retain all of their colors, clearly and accurately reproducing each of the different hand drums and different-sized cymbals). Also, it can be helpful to remember a couple of things with any pair of in-canal earphones. First, wrap the part of the wire connected to the phone once around each ear (that neutralizes the gravity that tends to drag the phones down and set them off course); 2nd, bring the cord up behind your head, not in front of it, for a snug, more secure fit (most earphones will "seem" too large to begin with--but not if you position them correctly); 3rd, wear them for a couple of days, enough to allow your ears time to adjust to the quality of the sound.
One caution: Just because these work out well, don't get carried away and start throwing money at Colby TV sets, CD players, etc. Producing these crackerjack toys is not rocket science--at least not compared to the marketing that enables the elitist brands to enjoy obscene profit margins.
