Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cables Unlimited AUD-1000-25 3.5mm Male to Female Stereo Cable (25 Feet, Black)Customer Review: Poorly shielded cable Summary: 2 Stars
This cable would be OK for a set of headphones but you should not use it in the signal path between a source device, like an MP3 player or computer, and an amplifier. The shielding is so poor in this cable that it will pickup a considerable amount of 60Hz EMI (aka hum)and you won't like the results.
I bought this cable and the similar AUD-1100-25 to connect my high-end Dell portable computer to the Sony pre-amplifier unit of my home entertainmenet system. I wanted to use my portable as an MP3 player since it's a lot easier to program and create playlists on a 17" computer screen than any of the portable MP3 players I've seen. When I had everything hooked up I experienced a very noticeable hum from my stereo speakers even before starting the player application on the computer. At first I thought I had a ground loop so I removed all other external cables (power, usb, ethernet)from the computer, running it on battery only. Still the hum persisted. Even with the AUD-1000-25 cable unplugged from the computer the hum persisted.
I then replaced the AUD-1000-25 with a pair of RCA cables w/ RCA to 1/8" stereo adapters and the hum went away. The RCA cables were hand-made with some quality shielded cable with the connectors hand-soldered by me. What a difference. So, that's what I ended up using.
Although I think Monster Cables and the like are a way over-priced, this product has gone too far in the other direction. I don't recommend this item if you're going to use it in an application that will amplify the signal (and noise) coming through the cable. It's easy to see why this cable is so cheap.
Customer Review: Don't waste your money. Summary: 2 Stars
I purchased 1 a couple of month ago and it lasted about 1 month when the right ear circuit cut out. I thought I broke a wire after running over it with my chair. So I ordered 2 more since the first was great sounding with no distortion or loss of volume. 1 for my computer and the other for my TV. Well, 1 lasted 2 days and the other about a week when the both lost the right ear circuit. After messing with them I discovered that the female terminal was the problem. It is ether warped or or to big. If Cables unlimited fixes this problem this would be a great product. But until then don't waste your money.
I checked this with several headphone jacks so it wasn't the jack on the Shure earphones I'm using now.
Customer Review: Adds noise to audio source (mic) Summary: 2 Stars
I used this item to extend a mcrophone cable.
When connected, it caused the sound quality to diminish significantly. It sounded as if it was pckng up interference, but I am not certain if the problem is related to attenuation, insulation, grounding or whatever. I ended up not using it.
Perhaps it would work better for an output device??
Customer Review: One long piece of crap. Summary: 1 Stars
I'm really kicking myself right now. It's the one product I've bought in a long time that I haven't read the review first. I have a gaming chair that has built in speakers, so I was looking for an extremely long cable because I've had problems in the past with shorter cords getting wrapped around my chair and breaking at the plug in. This cable, however, broke the second time I plugged it in.
The sound quality is absolutely horribe. I understand cheap extensions like these will have a little static but this had so much static I could barely understand anything. Mine also had a high-pitched, continuous cross between a squeal and a screech. So I went back to my old cable. A few days later I decided to try it out again hooking it up to a 2 foot brand new cable to see if maybe the cable I had first plugged it into was bad. As I was pushing the cable fully into the input, the head just snapped off. It took needle-nose pliers to get the head out of the input. Lucky, nothing damaged my 200$ chair.
I've bought cheaper cables that work so much better than this.
Customer Review: Not Meant To Be Used Frequently Summary: 1 Stars
While this cable would work great if it was plugged in and left alone, I unfortunately needed to use it as a microphone extension for a few video shoots. After about six or so times I used it (and a week after I received it) both channels no longer worked. This cable is not meant for any sort of medium or light duty work, because of it's cheap construction. If you plug it in to forget about it, then I'm sure it'll do fine. I also would think twice about using it as a headphone extension if you tend to wrap the cable around the headset, as it probably wouldn't last too long either.
