With all the new laptops only having usb ports (never enough) and the existing add-ons that only have db9 ports, these adapters are great. the only thing you have to watch for is the com port assignment. many older devices do not like anything past COM4. these adapters are assignable so it's not an issue. i am using 2 on my dell 9400 and they are assigned com 4 and 8. I also use a serial emulator software package for my delorme earthmate gps and it also works great , assigned com 5. my modem(most internal modems) is at com 3. i have left com 1 & 2 open for older devices if needed. as i said newer devices can be assigned up to com 10 if needed. FYI...Maximum length on usb cables w/o power boost is approx 16', can be doubled if device usb port is also powered. one can boost usb lengths even farther if powered hubs are in line with cables. i have been succesful up to 47' in a dentist office where his digital x-ray scanner was on the other side of the office from the computer controlling it (used 2 d-link powered usb hubs and the scanner usb port was powered. hope this helps all of you that have too many toys. i have a total of 20 usb ports and i am using 16 of them!
