Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop MemoryCustomer Review: Good experience with PC3-8500 Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a new 13.3in MacBook Pro all alumininum type with the defaulted memory configuration of 2GB. I've bought Crucial DIMMs for my other notebook before and they worked very well so I decided to buy the same Crucial brand (but different type) for my MacBook. I went to the Crucial Web site and found out the right type of memories and checking the MacBook manual also showed PC3-8500 was the right DIMMs. I purchased 4GB of PC3-8500 and the price was very good at Amazon (coupling with the free shipping) so I saved about %35 versus what I could have paid when buying the MacBook with 4GB. Installation was about 10 minutes with most of the time spent trying to open the very tiny screws carefully on the back of the MacBook. My challenge was handling the very tiny screws with my tiny-but-not-so-good screwdriver rather than replacing the DIMMs. I suggest setting the MacBook on a flat surface on top of a towel or something soft so you will not scratch the front of the Macbook. After installation, the MacBook boosted and recognized the 4GB memories right away and everything worked smoothly. No noticeable increase in performance but definitely it will help when running multiple programs at the same time using OS X or Windows XP. I recommend Crucial memories due to their good quality and good Web site showing which type of memories your computer needs. Also kudos to Amazon for offering such a good price (one of the lowest PC3-8500 DIMMs I found). The plus of doing this yourself was saving the built-in 2GB DIMMs which you may use in other computer or give them to friends. Replacing memories is pretty simple and I think anyone can do. Just make sure you have good screwdriver and need to remember exactly the locations of the 8 screws since they are not identical (3 screws at the top are longer than the rest)
Customer Review: Not life changing, but it helps Summary: 5 Stars
Bought the Acer Aspire One 10.1" D250 Kit at [...]. Very nice machine, good feature set and it works. It came with the usual 1-GB RAM installed. OK but obviously only just enough. Acer sort of claims 1-GB is the max the single slot can take, but every Acer hack website says it'll take 2GB and most say that this is the 2-GB module to use. There is some debate over whether you end up with the full 2-GB or whether the system will only recognize 1.5GB or so. More on that later. I've used Crucial Memory several times before for my PCs and it has always been an excellent performer - and for $32, what the hey. So 24-hours after I bought the Acer, I ordered the 2-GB RAM. Was going out of town so I asked for 2-day shipping. The module arrived the next day - whoa! thanks!
I printed out the system specs before I started. Yup, showed 1-GB installed. Took out 1-screw, popped the panel, swapped modules and 2 minutes later I powered up again. Quite a bit quicker to load the OS, but absolutely no indication or messages that anything had changed. Opened a couple of apps, definitely quicker. And, the real reason for buying the 2-GB, I shoot a lot of digi-pics and 1-GB took forever to load the image folders and bring up the thumbnails. The D250 does that a lot quicker now, Checked the system specs again - yup, all 2-GB showing and at work. So, all-n-all, very simple to do, and a distinctly faster machine with no hitches, glitches or hiccups. Still not blazing speed, but a noticeable improvement. May not make me deliriously happy; but the 1-GB would have eventually driven me crazy and I'd have done this out of frustration. A very good experience and a worthwhile investment. And really and truly, anyone can do it.
Customer Review: The right stuff for my Lenovo Z61t laptop Summary: 5 Stars
If you're not sure what memory goes into your computer, [...] has a "memory advisor tool" to tell you. Very easy to use.
Upgrading the memory is the cheapest and fastest way to increase the performance of your laptop. I had 1 Gb of installed memory, and the most that Windows XP Home will recognize is 3 Gb. After a little research, I found out that I didn't need to install matched pairs, and I could install a 2 Gb memory chip and keep my existing 1 Gb chip to max out the memory.
Installing the memory module was easy. I went to the support page for Lenovo, and they have instructions (and even a video) to show you how to do it. I expect that most major brand-name computer manufacturers likewise have support pages that instruct on how to remove and install memory modules.
For me, all I had to do was remove the battery, unscrew four screws, pop out the palm rest (that was the hardest part), unhook the connector cable from the palm rest to the system unit, and insert the memory module until it snapped into place. Then I reversed the steps and was done.
After installing the memory, I ran some memory tests. MemTest86 is one of the leading memory testing programs for free, and you can download for free from their website. If you are a Windows user, you can also download and use Windows Memory Diagnostic from Microsoft's webite for free. Windows Memory Diagnostic runs some more thorough tests. Use a search engine to find these programs.
Given my five-star rating of the product, the outcome of the tests should be obvious: no errors.
Customer Review: Excellent product for Windows and Macs!! Summary: 5 Stars
I have installed one of these 2GB Crucial RAMs on both my 20" Apple iMac Core 2 Duo T7700 (with 256MB ATI 2600XT graphics) giving a total of 3GB RAM and on my HP 14" notebook with an Intel 965 chipset (with a 256MB nVidia mobile 8000 series graphics card) also totaling 3GB of RAM. I also use Windows Vista on the iMac using Apple Bootcamp (separate partition and NOT virtual PC).
Both MAC OS X Tiger and Leopard work really fast on it (way better than 1GB of RAM), Leopard being a little heavier on the memory. As for Windows, Windows XP just explodes on power with this chip and Windows Vista becomes about 2X-3X faster.
Most games for Mac don't require much memory anyways, but Windows games like NFS ProStreet, Gears of War, Crysis and Call of Duty 4 work a lot faster, specially because excess memory is available for graphics use.
Video editing and Photo editing become noticeably quicker, while audio editing doesn't show much appreciable improvement.
In general, multi-tasking becomes a breeze. In fact, there is a lot of excess memory available (even after allotting memory for graphics) to run an Anti-Virus, 2 Messengers, Outlook, Firefox, an HD Movie and Gears Of War paused in the background. I'm not kidding, I've tried it, they were all working smoothly.
Note: It is fully compatibly with Apple iMac!! Apple will tell you that only the original Apple memory, which costs a fortune, will work BUT THEY ARE WRONG! I have been using it for the past approx. 6 months.
WORTH THE MONEY!! Must Buy!! 5 - Stars!
Customer Review: Add-on for my Dell 10v / 1011 Mini HacBook Summary: 5 Stars
This made absolutely no difference in performance on my Dell Mini 10v / 1011. I am certain it's the computer, not the RAM itself that is the problem.
Dell doesn't recommend going 2GB... in fact, they make it VERY tough to even get into the computer. I had to take out almost every single screw to get this installed. When I saw how poor of a purchase it was, I only left it in because I didn't have the energy to take the netbook completely apart again hah!
If this *does* give my netbook a performance boost, it's barely noticeable. It IS, however, recognized in XP, Linux, or MacOS (I ran the "special" OSX86 installer and got it working well).
The RAM seems good and hasn't caused errors, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't take this as a bad review for the RAM. It has held up its end of the bargain after a year -- so I'm still giving it 5 stars. I just want to let you know that:
A -- yes, this works in a Dell Mini 10v / 1011 (but prepare to completely disassemble it to get it this in)
and
B -- please don't bother putting this into a netbook hah. Save your pennies and buy a machine that's been built correctly: Apple MacBook Air MC505LL/A 11.6-Inch Laptop
