Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Canopus 77010150100 ADVC110 ConverterCustomer Review: This Is The One Summary: 5 Stars
Just like almost everyone else here, I bought this Canopus ADVC110 and I'm totally pleased with it. This is the one you want to get. Trust me, I researched the heck out of available options for VHS conversion, and this was the only solution that didn't scare me.
The combo boxes have horrible reviews. Many don't have tuners. Some don't let you record properly. And they all have tons of issues where they JUST STOP WORKING after a few months, even if they weren't used heavily - producing "coasters" (unplayable DVDs). I asked around, and one of my family members, and another friend, both had the exact same issue.
So, I went the converter route. It's more work, takes up more hard drive space, but offers much more flexibility. You can capture just what you want to. And if you plan to edit, or post online, instead of getting a DVD that you will somehow have to rip down to a single movie file (with compression) - this takes time, and hard drive space - and then edit, then possibly re-compress by posting online or burning a DVD - you capture the raw video itself, then do with it what you wish. It's worth the effort.
The two lower-cost versions of this product by Roxio and Elgato had reported problems as well - I've read about compatibility issues, and also many reports of dropped frames and audio drifting. Do you want to pull in a 20 year old VHS tape of family movies, and after two hours of capture, find out that by the end of the tape peoples' mouths don't match up with what they're saying?! I think I'd go crazy if that happened. I wanted to capture once, then file that VHS tape away forever.
I don't have direct experience with those other two manufacturers' products, but the reviews scared me off. The reviews for this Canopus product were stellar - especially from Mac users (as I am one) - so I bought it. I paid for two day shipping and it came in one. Within 10 minutes, I had my VCR (about 7 years old) hooked up to the device via three RCA cables (left audio, right audio, and video), set the Digital In/Analog In setting to Analog, opened iMovie on my Mac, selected Capture Video from Camera and pressed play on the VCR - and that's it! Video captured, perfectly - at least, as perfectly as the condition of the tape and VCR (clean those heads) allows. I've done multiple 2 hour tapes, and the audio at the end is as perfect as that in the beginning.
Of course this kills hard drive space. I have four hard drives in my Mac - a 250 GB, 500, another 500, and a 1TB. I don't have official numbers but I read that one hour of VHS capture in iMovie is 14 GB. Clean off your hard drive first - I filled mine up, and lost almost two hours of capturing. Dumb. But once you've captured a full tape, you can edit it down into multiple segments, burn a DVD (a data DVD with a Quicktime .mov - and a playable DVD - is ideal) and delete the original, if needed. It's a bit tedious, but it works.
I'm a week in, and I'm very, very happy with my decision - happy enough to be excited about writing this long review. It's a comfort these days to buy a product and have it work exactly as expected - even when you've heard great things and had high hopes for it. And it's also a comfort to not have to worry about mechanical parts that can, and probably will, fail in a number of months. Go with the Canopus ADVC110, and you'll be happy too.
