Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Cables To Go 7 Port USB 2.0 HubCustomer Review: Best USB hub ever Summary: 5 Stars
My old SanDisk 7-port powered hub from about 4 years ago finally started flaking out and stopped recognizing my peripherals, and initially I purchased a D-Link hub to replace it. As soon as I plugged that in, it was worse than the old fried SanDisk. It even caused one of my external hard drives to stop mounting somehow, even though I never even plugged that drive into the D-Link. It also caused all sorts of weird behavior with all my peripherals. I returned it immediately and bought this one.
Even my trusty old SanDisk had never been able to handle all my peripherals at once, and I'd never even bothered trying to plug the more power-hungry devices into it. I didn't think any USB hub could handle that. But this one can. I have a first generation Macbook Pro, and connected to this hub currently are: Wacom Intuos 4 tablet, M-Audio Axiom 25 MIDI keyboard, Das keyboard, Epson printer, Epson scanner, SanDisk multi card reader, and occasionally a USB flash drive. This solid hub has yet to even wince. I still haven't plugged in my 500 GB external drives, especially the one that is not wall-wart powered, but I wouldn't be surprised if this hub could even handle those. Maybe I'll get another one and chain them together. But I don't really need nor want to mount all four external drives at once.
This hub's aluminum construction is more substantial, even the ports seem to grip my USB cables more firmly, and the quality seems to be above and beyond anything I've experienced in a USB hub before. This is the hub I've always wished existed but hadn't found.
Customer Review: Highly recommended; EDIT: NO LONGER RECOMMENDED Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this hub for a month and a half, and so far so good. I have a variety of USB 1 and 2 peripherals hooked up to it, and the 2s (three hard drives and a scanner) seem to work at full speed. A few reviewers mentioned that the hub slides around in its base. Apparently, Cables To Go heard the complaints: My unit came with a sticky pad to adhere inside the base to make the fit secure. (I don't know why anyone would actually want the drive to slide around. To each his own.) The light on top *is* kind of silly, since it's always on, even if the hub is unplugged. It doesn't bother me because it's lost in the tangle of cables and peripherals behind my notebook.
Most other seven-port hubs have such negative reviews that I was going to try to get by with a couple four-port hubs instead. The reviews for this unit, however, made it seem like a reasonable risk. I spent more to get it from Amazon, [...], because Amazon gives a little more time for returns and has a good reputation for standing by their products. I'm happy with this hub and recommend it to others.
Update: After about nine months of use, the ports started to go out. I think three of the ports died (it's been a while, and I don't remember exactly how many, but I was swapping devices around so I could keep working). The hub was in warranty, but I didn't have time to return it. I also wasn't sure if I wanted to bother with another of the same model. I happened across another hub at Sam's Club, a Belkin Hub-To-Go for $25, so I just wrote off this one as a loss.
Customer Review: Does exactly what it's meant to do Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this USB hub for a few weeks now, and I am extremely pleased with how well it simply works. I've had absolutely no problems with Windows recognizing the device, and I haven't noticed any speed issue with any of the ports - and I have all seven ports occupied quite frequently. In addition, I haven't noticed any problems with the cord length - it would fit well for a laptop or a desktop. For the price, you can't beat this amazing organizational tool, and I would be surprised if you could find a cheaper 7-port hub that's anywhere near as well-made.
It's important to note, however, that the power supply to the hub has some quirks that I didn't anticipate. Unlike other reviewers, when this hub wasn't attached to my computer, it didn't charge my iPod - I've had this problem at USB outlets at airports as well, so it may be my iPod, but I have a feeling that iPods simply don't charge unless they establish a USB connection to the computer, or are using Apple's chargers. Also, whenever my computer is shut off, my external hard drive (Maxtor brand) somehow "thinks" that it's attached to the computer, and continues to spin violently after my computer goes to sleep. It doesn't have this problem when connected to one of my computer's own USB ports, so it's probably just a design flaw of the external hard drive. I just keep it plugged in to my computer, however, and I only need to use two ports for 8 devices, and everything has been working fine.
Customer Review: Slick Little Device! Summary: 5 Stars
So far with 5 USB cables active, it works excellent using either the power adaptor or in self powered mode. I like the versatile mounting options. My unit, purchased end of Nov '07, included small foam tape adhesive strip and instructions on how to mount so the HUB will not move freely in the holder in any position. The 4 USB cables I have plugged into rear, fit nicely along with the power connector and mini-USB to PC connection. I use the 3 front slots for easy access USB devices - camera, bluetooth dongle, etc.
If you don't care for the intensity of the blue LED, there is an easy fix. Just pop off the clear top LED lens with a small screwdriver blade and insert an opaque object in the underside of the lens receptical. I found a black pencil eraser that fit perfectly in the underside of the lens, or you could use a hole punch to punch out a dot of black cardboard or leather. Now, the only light emitted is just an unobtrusive perimeter of blue light emitted around the circumference of the bezel and it looks factory! If you want a more stealth look without all the advertising stenciling - just take a sharpie pen and black out the white labels or perhaps you might be able to chemically remove the white paint off the black anodized finish. Otherwise, you are good to go as it does exactly what it says it does.
Definently worth the money and seems to be quality made!
Customer Review: Greatest USB Hub I've ever used; Seriously!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Granted, I've only had this product for a short time, but it bar none the greatest USB hub I've ever used (and I've gone through plenty).
There is no noticeable loss is transfer speed between hooking my external hard drive directly to my Macbook Pro or through the hub (even with 6 out of 7 ports being used and 2 simultaneously for external hard drives; I'm a college student so I need a lot of storage). Also, I tried to transfer data to one of the external hard drives, without power hooked into the hub, and the transfer speeds were still impressive. I haven't used a USB 1.1 & USB 2.0 device at the same time yet but the box says it can handle both simultaneously as well.
The hub is also "heavy" enough so that dangling wires won't move it around my desk much. You do however, have to keep it in the base to get the extra weight. The plus side to this is if you need to bring the hub with you, it in itself is not heavy and can easily fit in your pocket if need be.
The only complaint I had was that the blue light on top is pretty bright and keeping my laptop on in my bedroom at night poses a problem. However, this is easily fixed with black electrical tape which not only blocks the light well, but blends in with the casing.
Overall, I'd give this product an A; no A+ because I had to find electrical tape to block the light in a "fashionable" way.
