Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of C. Crane FM Reflect AntennaCustomer Review: Definite, significant improvement Summary: 5 Stars
I live in Ann Arbor, MI 35-40 miles from Detroit and most suburban Detroit signals are weak in my area. My home theater is in the basement, further challenging adequate reception. When I set up my Onkyo SR605 receiver with the included single wire antenna I could receive only the local Ann Arbor stations with some clarity - everything else was weak or had significant static. A powered FM antenna by Terk offered little improvement (the static just seemed louder). After reading these reviews I replaced the included freebie antenna with the C Crane FM Reflect and the difference has been substantial. A variety of setup configurations are included in the manual and I experimented with all of them (there were definitely differences in reception depending upon the direction each limb of the dipole was deployed) until I found the best one. The limbs of the dipole attach easily to a wall/ceiling with thumbtacks and I don't really notice the antenna in the corner of the room.
Bottom line: The reception is not perfect; there are still some weak stations. But across the FM band it is undoubtedly significantly improved. Now I receive a majority of the Detroit area stations with no to minimum static; I can actually use the tuner portion of the receiver which was previously not the case. Some tweaking of the position of the antenna and its two limbs is definitely necessary on initial installation. All things considered I can confidently recommend the product.
P.S. This is probably obvious to many of you but for the newbies remember that reception of a particular station may be improved by switching from stereo to mono mode - higher level receiver/tuners may even remember that mode for each specific station preset; for FM radio level of audio fidelity this doesn't make too much difference in listening enjoyment, especially if the alternative is NOT listening to that favorite station because of static.
Description of C. Crane FM Reflect AntennaWhether you listen to a portable radio or a top-of-the-line stereo receiver, the quality of sound coming from an FM station is dependent upon the station's signal strength in your area. Adding an FM antenna can help greatly, so be sure to select the best FM antenna for your needs. The FM Reflect Antenna will work with any portable or stereo receiver. This antenna incorporates a new dipole design for maximum gain across the entire FM broadcast band. Up to 213 percent more powerful than a standard dipole antenna, it covers the entire FM band with an almost flat response, where standard dipoles start to fall off near the end of the band. Many FM stations now broadcast their signal with circular polarization. The FM Reflect Antenna is the only FM antenna that can be adjusted to take advantage of this. It is not affected as much by surrounding objects and people as other FM antennas are.
