I have the Brother HL-4040CDN which uses the TN110 or TN115 hi yield. The following information is gleaned from google searches for remanufacturing the two types of cartridges.
The rated yields for North American market is 110 black, 2500 pages, 110 color 1500 pages, 115 K 5000 pages, 115 color 4000 pages.
To keep the density of the color constant over the life of the cartridge, the printer starts out with a hi voltage bias and gradually reduces it as determined by the number of drum revolutions. The low life cartridge has a gear with one rib which revolves over 1500 pages and the hi life cartridge has a gear with two ribs. When a new cartridge is inserted a gear pushes up and resets the drum bias voltage to high.
Various available pictures clearly show what gears one needs to reset to the bias to high to continues printing from the partly used cartridge.
The color toners should run out together only if they had been installed at the same time.
I did not play around with resetting the gear on my original lo yield cartridges, but I will try that with the hi yield cartridges. Since it affects the bias voltage, we shall see if it makes any difference in the color tonality. However, for my purposes, I use inkjet printers for my "serious" color photography prints. I am very satisfied with this printer/toner in my home office and general printing.
This printer does not use a chip to keep track of the usage and does not have a clear/back drum reset mentioned in a comment for a different model.
