Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother HL-2070N Network Monochrome Laser Printer (Black)

Customer Review: Best laser printer for the money
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm a techie and somewhat picky about electronics products I buy.
I don't normally write review, but I feel obligation to do it for this printer because it's one of the few products I'm really satisfied with.
I went through Samsung ML-1210, ML-2250 as well as HP and Canon printer, multifuntion printer, etc. but never quite satisfied with a complete package whether it's ink cost, print quality, performance. I found this Brother printer an impressive offering and quite happy so far.
Pros:
- small footprint, if not the smallest for laser printer
- reasonable toner cost ($45 for OEM, or you can buy refillable toner for $15)
- easy network installation: software driver is intuitive. It's up and sharing within minutes. You'll just need a router (or wireless one) to share this printer on your home network. This built-in printer server feature is a $200 option on many comparable printer in this price class!

Cons:
- not really, except it consumes little more power than other home laser printer, at 450W vs. 350W.
- separate drum and toner units. Samsung has these two in one unit so when you replace toner, you also get new drum, for around $70. Don't know how much a drum for this printer will cost though.

Some people mentioned paper output tends to curl. I believe this was only on early production. Brother has corrected this problem. My printer manufacture date is Oct 06 and printout looks fine. I never thought of the Brother brand when I shopped for my printer. HP is a name brand but way overpriced. Samsung is decent. But Brother is the best value! Highly recommended.

Customer Review: Great Printer if you Don't Need Color
Summary: 5 Stars

My Mom kept complaining about her older HP inkjet printer. It was acting odd yet again. This was her second HP inkjet printer and she didn't use it that often - in fact it was still on its second ink cartridge. She was asking for a better option.

I asked if she really needed to print in color. She didn't. She likes printing web pages to give my computer-phobic dad to read, or perhaps to print off an occasional recipe.

Folks on the Macintosh OS X list I subscribe to periodically tackle the topic of low cost printers, and Brother consistently gets rave reviews. Brother seems to do a great job of producing machines that perform well at a reasonable price, and they are among the best for Macintosh support (Mom has a Mac Mini).

So I ordered a Brother HL-2070N for her. I got the N model with the Ethernet port (it also has a USB port) so she could also print from her wireless iBook.

Installation went well. The driver installed easily and the printer worked perfectly the first time I printed. I was expecting this to be a bit more complicated since I was connecting through the network, but alas, there was no excitement.

The machine appears to be built nicely - a lot more solid looking than the typical ink jet - and the black finish looks great on her desk.

Since getting this machine Mom is thrilled. The machine warms up in seconds, and spits out pages at an impressive rate. The printouts are sharp and easy to read, even with her 80 plus year old eyes.

When my own ancient HP Laser Jet finally gives up the ghost I expect a Brother will replace it.

Customer Review: Brother HL-2070N**So Far-So Good**
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this printer a few days ago from Stap**s for under $80 & so far, I'm happy with it. I have it plugged into my wireless router & now I am able to print from my laptop wirelessly. I must admit that it took me more than an hour to get it connected to my network-probably my fault-, but I also don't think the manual was very helpful. Anyway, I used an IP address it's all set.
The printer has a solid enough feel & a small footprint. I haven't encountered any major paper curling or noise issue with it. The ends of the paper might have a slight curl, but as you lay it out, then it straightens out-no problem. I also have not had the lights flicker during use-it doesn't even seem to draw that much electricity.
I have it set to 'toner saver' & the print still looks sharp & clear. I have not yet tried to print envelopes so I can't speak to that. I like the fact that it goes to sleep when not in use & responds quickly when a job is sent to it. I also like that I can load the printer up with a lot of paper & forget it. Amazon carries the replacement toner @ the lowest price that I've seen so far. I am looking forward to saving $$ as compared to buying inkjet cartridges that are not cost effective.
I am sure there are other features that I have not yet explored, but this printer really suits my needs at present. It is inexpensive, efficient, quiet, and best of all, I can print from anywhere in my house without being tethered to it by cables.

Customer Review: I have no complaints
Summary: 5 Stars

I have now printed several hundred pages with this printer. I have only seen one paper jam because we shut it off after we sent a bigger job than intended to it. I use it only as a network printer and the driver installs very well and works flawlessly. I haven't seen any printing errors and no flaws whatsoever in the print quality. It's very fast and hasn't slowed down any. The toner saver mode is a really nice feature. I don't have a whole lot more to say about it because it just works.

I also bought it because the toner and drums are cheaper (per page) to replace than most printers. I'm glad that my extensive research paid off. If you want a good quality black and white printer, that can be networked, is reliable, fast and economical, buy this printer. My experience with it is positive enough that would recommend it to anyone for home use.

I agree with others that it is a bit loud, but where I have it doesn't matter to me any. It is in the same room as my TV, 12 feet from the couch and doesn't bother anyone.

Update: I've now printed 1268 pages and had a total of two jams. The second jam was from really thick paper, although I had printed thick paper before and a few times since without problems. I know this because the printer's management web interface keeps statistics.

Customer Review: This printer's web page
Summary: 5 Stars

This printer doesn't have the 'built-like-a-tank" feel or weight of my old Laserwriter IIg, but it's far quicker and less troublesome. If you want to do black-and-white printing on a budget, I highly recommend it. I use it to print book drafts and even the 8-point type in footnotes is sharp and clear. The driver installed quickly and worked without a hitch on my Mac mini and MacBook.

Installed to run over an Ethernet network, this printer has a rudimentary web page server that allows you to use your web browser to configure some of its features remotely, including the print resolution and a toner save mode. You can also see how many pages you've used on the toner and drum, so you have an idea when each needs replacing. The web page configuration information is buried in the Network User's Guide, so I'll post it here. (Voting this review helpful will keep in near the top and help others to see this posting.)

The web address is: http://brn-8c4310.local/printer/main.html

That'll give you the printer's home page. To change the configuration, you'll need this information:

The default account is: admin
