Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother HL-2070N Network Monochrome Laser Printer (Black)

Customer Review: Great printer at a giveaway price
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this printer to replace a 15 year old HP Laserjet 4 that finally died. One essential requirement was that the printer I chose needed to be capable of being networked since it was shared by others in my family, and I prefered built-in ethernet.

After researching a lot of printers, I chose the Brother HL 2070N because of the price, the built-in Ethernet, the excellent reviews, and its low price. I have not been disappointed. I have a Windows 2003 server that acts as a print server for the family, and the Brother installed easily with the software that was on their website. The Macs in my family already had the correct Brother printer driver as part of OS X, and the PC driver downloaded correctly from the server when each client installed the printer on their machine. Even the Vista driver was provided in the box, an essential feature for those computer owners who have upgraded. I especially liked the fact that there is a browser interface for managing and configuring the printer, something I wasn't expecting on such a low-priced unit.

I'm a little bit biased towards HP printers. When I went shopping, however, none of the smaller HPs that had networking were anywhere near the 2070N in price. Also, the power saving mode is a treat. My HP 4 didn't have it, and the machine had to be manually turned on or off. The Brother is just left on and wakes up when needed, then quickly goes back into power saving mode. The manual feed for envelopes is excellent and prints without wrinkling or creasing.

While I've only owned this printer for two weeks, I'd recommend it for any environment that is looking for a high quality laser printer at a giveaway price. I also would like to say that I have not experienced the paper curling issue that is written about so much here. I think the whole issue is a tempest in a teapot.

If you're looking for a laser printer with features that are more common on larger units, don't think twice. This is a great value.

Customer Review: Great laser printer at an awesome price.
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this printer as I wanted a laser printer that I could use over the network with both my Mac and Windows computers. I'm happy to say this is one of the best purchases I've made - especially from a Mac standpoint. Brother's driver support is great and works flawlessly with both OS X Tiger and Leopard. The print quality is great for printing professional documents such as resumes and invoices. The other thing that is nice about this printer is that the replacement toner cartridges are quite reasonable (at least at the time of this writing). Keep in mind that this is a lighter duty laser meant for home and home office environments. If you are looking for something to print hundreds of pages a day this is likely not the printer for you, but for light duty typical home and home office use it is great. Personally, as I have alluded to above, the network feature of this printer is key to me. It's great to be able to sit in the living room working on a document and then just fire off a print job over to the printer without having to worry about running back to the office and hooking up a USB printer every time I want to print something.

As I mentioned before, Brother's driver support for the product is really decent. One of my favorite things about Brother's drivers is that they package both driver only and driver and applications downloads from their website. This is great if you just need the driver as you only have to download a 5 MB file as opposed to a 100+ MB file as you do from some other manufacturers that only provide a unified driver/shovel-ware download package.

In summary, this is probably one of the only technology purchases I have made where I have no buyer's remorse afterwards. I think the key is calibrating your expectations - If you are looking for a laser-precision printer with network capability for light duty printing, then this is a great device.

Customer Review: Great Laser Printer, setup network in 10 minutes tops!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my first review on anything I've purchased, like most, I do a fair amount of research before buying anything, for this particular product, it is fairly new so there are not too many reviews out there, but most of the reviews seemed positive and the price was right. (There is a great rebate right now) Anyway, I was looking for an affordable B&W laser printer for my small business and I wanted to be able to network the printer to a PC as well as a Macintosh Powerbook, both are setup on a Dlink Wireless Router, PC is hooked up using a cat5 cable while the Mac Powerbook is wirelessly connected. I wasnt sure if the Brother 2070n would be compatible with both the PC and Mac at the same time since I have little know-how on setting up printer networks, but I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome.
I connected all the cables to the printer (power cable, network cable). Then, I set up the Mac Powerbook first, just followed the instructions, installed the driver and added the printer to my computer, it took less then 5 minutes and I was able to print wirelessly from my laptop via my wireless router! I was pretty impressed with the ease of setup. Next I went over to my PC to install the driver and prayed that it would print as well. Yes my prayers were answered, the setup again took less then 5 minutes. Popped in the CDROM, setup the driver and the software found the printer on the network. My PC is running XP and there was no need to reset the computer, printed an email and it came out perfect!

Overall I'm pretty impressed with the Brother 2070n, I've only printed out a few things so I cant comment on the life of the cartridge or drum, but as far as ease of setup, this printer was a cinch to setup on a network. Other PROS: very affordable, small footprint, looks sleek in black. Cons: none yet, will have to report that after some more use.

Customer Review: Compact, clean, and whomps 'em out
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm between homes right now. My wireless network is in storage with the rest of my belongings so I have not been able to test the networking features of this printer yet. But I can tell you about how this machine prints.

I used to own an old Epson Action Laser 1000. It worked well enough at 300 dpi and it was kind of pokey for a laser. I priced cartridges when the toner ran out. It became clear that I could buy a whole printer for less. After reading some reviews, I bought the HL-2070N. First impressions:

1. It prints beautifully. The print is clear with good monochrome pictures.

2. It's not exactly stealthy. When this printer cranks up to print, it does so in a rather noisy manner. It's not really objectionable but it's not something you'll run suddenly in a room with a sleeping person. By contrast, inkjets generally whisk along with a whirr and a swish. However, inkjets won't do what's next--

3. She really whomps out the pages. It's fast, far faster than my old Epson.

I've seen other reviewers making much of the curl of the pages when they emerge from the printer. As other have said, the pages quickly flatten out again once they cool and the room humidity soaks back in. It's not an issue. Also, other reviewers complained of how the printer makes the lights blink while printing. It does do that a bit. (It must have a pretty muscular roller heater.) I didn't find it objectionable although it can be noticed.

Conclusion thus far: I'm very satisfied with this printer and I'm glad I bought it. I'll update the review about the Ethernet connection once I get my house, unpack my stuff, and get back into networking.

Happy printing!

Customer Review: Fantastic Printer at a Fantaastic Price!
Summary: 5 Stars

This printer is EXACTLY what I have been looking for--laser quality, at an inkjet price. After years of buying affordable inkjet printers, that always printed out sub-par looking documents, and ended up jamming or flat-out breaking with only light use, I started to think about going to a laser printer, although I never thought I could afford one. But the Brother 2070N fit my budget perfectly. Although I was scared at what kind of quality I would get in a laser printer for SUCH a low price, I couldn't be happier!

I'm running a Mac powerbook through wireless highspeed internet....set up was simple, with the included cd-rom (Windows and Mac discs both come with it). I'm running it wirelessly through the new Verizon FIOS system I just had installed...just attach the printer to your wireless router with the included 8 foot long network cable (if you need more length, or want to use a USB-to-printer cable, you'll need to buy that separately), install the driver on your computer, and you're up and running in a matter of 15 mintues. I could not afford a pricier machine, but thanks ot this little gem, I don't need to spend more--for under a hundred bucks, you get a super-reliable, easy-to-use printer. I only needed a printer for printing out directions, receipts, web pages, shipping labels, resumes....all the basics. You would be surprised, at how little color printing you actually do--unless of course you're doing business charts and such that require color--the black and white laser is the way to go! All in all, I couldn't be more pleased with this machine, or it's price! Do not hesitate--this is the printer to get! Such a deal! Thank you or such a great product, Brother!
