I have been a long time user of Brother products, not only because they are solid machines, but because you can also get refurb or generic cartridges on the cheap.
I received my model DCP 7040 today and was able to setup the new machine in about 15 minutes including software install. Knowing that the machine comes with a starter cartridge that has a capacity of approximately 1000 pages, I also purchased a high capacity knockoff toner through amazon for an additional $16. (I will write a review on that product as well when it comes time to insert into the printer)
I have already tested out all of the features. This is so far, a solid machine. No issues installing and operating on my PC running Windows 7. Startup to print time is nominal, and the overall noise output of this machine is less than the other three ink jets that we have in this office.
Here is a breakdown in price difference between this machine and my Brother MFC ink jet (for kicks I will also breakdown an HP model we have):
Brother DCP-7040 - Monochrome
I purchased the TN360 compatible cartridge through Tonerpals via Amazon at a rate of $15.40 + $3.99 shipping. Total cost $19.39. This is a High Yield product which allows for approximately 2600 printed pages per cartridge.

Laser paper is not needed in a laser machine, I have always used normal print paper without any issues and but it in bulk at Sam's or Costco.
Brother MFC 420cn - Color (4 cartridge)
I have used this machine now for over 4 years without any issues using compatible LC-41 ink sets purchased through Vivamart via Amazon at a rate of $8.62 for an 8 pack (2x each) with free shipping. Each cartridge will yield approximately 250 printed pages normal load and much less when printing photos.

HP Officejet 6500 Wireless - Color (4 cartridge)
This machine is just over a year old and the cheapest I can find a set of non OEM's is through eforcity via Amazon at a rate of $22.04 + $2.95 shipping for a total of $24.99. (if you can find them cheaper, by all means...) This also performs at approximately 250 pages per cartridge unless a high yield black is used. the high yield alone is $15+ for the non OEM.

This is very much a biased review for Brother equipment, but also based off of current prices for cartridges through Amazon, and at the lowest price listed. Brother Inkjet machines are usually the only comparable machines as far as cost per page (cpp) is concerned, to the costs associated with printing on a laserjet. There is no way I could in good conscience compare a monochrome laserjet to a full color 4 cartridge machine which is why I offered the cpp of laser monochrome, and then those of the comparable multi-function inkjet options.
Wanna see how your current setup matches up? Total cost of cartridges / number of pages printable = cpp
Remember that even though you are printing black and white pages on your full color machine, you will still be utilizing a small portion of your color cartridges to print out that black. There is no real algorithm that will allow you the precise amount of ink used, so a basic total is given. This is why when the cartridge capacity says 250 pages, that is the formula I use. For paper costs: price per ream / 500 = cost per page.
This is why I ALWAYS purchase a Brother machine. As you can see, it costs nearly 5 times as much to print on an HP unit as it does to print on a comparable Brother based on prices pulled from the same website. Amazon usually has the lowest collection of prices for ink and toner. I hope this information helps you in your quest to find the best bang for your buck.
