Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of iConvert Slide and Negative Digital Scanner for PC and MacCustomer Review: Perfect Solution Summary: 4 Stars
I got this last night, and in about an hour I digitized about 50 slides, including time to decide another 50 weren't worth transferring. I use a Mac, an Intel-based MacBook Pro, and for me the setup of the computer was effortless. The instructions, however, are overly broad, and it took me a good ten slides to figure out the most efficient workflow routine. I'm sure that more expensive devices have more bells and whistles, but I was very happy with the results on slides that dated from the early 70's. For my needs, the device is perfect.
I would recommend that if you have any concerns, bring your laptop to the Brookstone store with a half-dozen slides, and let them make it work for you. I found their salespeople in our local store to be very helpful. If you can get there at a slow time, I'm sure they'd demonstrate it for you, and get you comfortable.
Customer Review: iConvert has it's ups and downs Summary: 3 Stars
I purchased this from a Brookstone store. I wish they had said on the box that it was not compatible with 62-bit, even though I have a 32-bit system I might have thought about this in terms of thinking about upgrading in the future.
Anyway, I rated this a three because of that and speed.
I did not seem to have the extreme problems that a lot of people had. It worked fine when I loaded it, I didn't have to use the manual, just figured it out from screen information.
It is slow, that I will give you, but I did not encounter the slowness that some people did. I did an entire tray of slides while watching tv, took me maybe 1 1/2 hours, but I knew it was going to be labor intensive because you are doing 1 slide at a time. What is cumbersome is that the slide holder only holds three slides. Would be nice if it held more. I tested it on negatives also, it worked.
The software has some neat features like batch renaming, file type conversion... which I liked.
As for the quality of the pics, so far OK. I mean they look good when I view them on the computer screen and I've Facebooked and emailed a couple that are ok. Not the same quality as the original slide and some color change, but they are very presentable. I have not tested printing on paper yet, but I don't have the greatest printer in the world anyway.
All in all I have to weigh out what it would have cost me to have my slides down by a business, and the time they would have taken, I think the $99 was worth it. After I convert my slides I will only be using it for negatives and I have a lot more negatives than slides! But I have a decent amount of slides.
So... bottom line, I give it a 3 out of 5 because of the slowness and the fact that the company does not tell you up-front (on the box people!) that it is not compatible with a 62-bit system.
I would recommend it after I pointed out the above to anyone.
Customer Review: Not for serious photography enthusiasts Summary: 2 Stars
My husband got me this for my birthday and I was thrilled because I prefer shooting film over shooting digital, but I still want to be able to have a quick way to get my photos online for people to view. It was easy to set up, and fast to scan. However, the quality of the scan was lacking. The colors were not as vivid as they should have been, the picture wasn't too sharp, and the highlights were blown-out. I thought that maybe it was just a badly exposed negative, so I tried a few that I knew were exposed well and produced a good print. Again, the highlights were very blown-out and the picture wasn't sharp. Because it's close by, I took the same negatives to Walmart and had them scanned. The quality was superior. We returned the product. It may be good for someone who is just looking for a quick way to get their negatives converted to digital (but if I were one of those people, I would pay maybe $50 at the most for a product that did that), but not for a photophile who needs the details to come out crisp and clear and not blown-out.
Customer Review: Dud Summary: 2 Stars
Didn't like this product at all - slide pictures were grainy and not clear. Gave it to my daughter. Not the seller's fault.
Customer Review: Slooooow, hard to center slides Summary: 1 Stars
Pros: NONE
Cons: Not enough light for darker slides, have to scan and reposition slides
in the carrier to get MOST of the slide in. Took THREE tries on each
slide tray to get it right and took me 20 minutes; I'll be dead and
gone before I can slide my hundreds of slides in.
Color Resolution/Depth and LED light are inadequate.
Software is terrible.
Store policy on returns is right from Hell! I received this as a
gift; even if you have a "gift receipt", they won't give you money,
just a store credit for their overpriced junk. This not stated
anywhere on their recipes; it's "just policy".
Imagine calling the person, who gave you the gift, and saying "I'm
returning the piece of Brookstone expensive junk you gave me and I
need your credit card number; Brookstone will credit your Credit Card
and you can send me the money".
Employees are pushed to sell hard get customers to buy more useless
junk like a "useless" (and expensive) extended warranty.
"Customer Service" should be renamed "Reasons you are wrong and we
cannot help you".
Take it to "higher management" and things get worse.
