Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Belkin Wireless N+ 802.11n Router (Black)Customer Review: Excellent Value in Features & Performance vs. Price Summary: 5 Stars
OK, first off, you'll find DOA or quick-death hdwe from just about any brand. These things (all consumer brands) are made inexpensively and a quick tour of ratings for nearly every router out there will produce folks swearing off Brand X in favor of Y, and others vowing never to make the mistake of buying Brand Y again, and they're happy with Brand X. Anecdotal evidence is not a good indicator of your results. (FWIW, I've bought 2 Belkin routers in the past year, one for a daughter, one for myself, and both have exceeded my expectations for the price. I am retiring an early 802.11g D-Link as obsolete, but it was a good workhorse for many years.)
So, after buying a $29 Belkin 802.11g+ for my daughter out of state, configuring it at home, shipping it to her for true plug-n-play, I was very impressed. (She literally opened the box, unplugged the ethernet from her laptop, and connected it to the WAN port of the router, opened available ntwks, typed in the very long key I'd given her, and voila, it has worked for the past 6 months.) I really liked the security features (don't set up a new router with less than WPA2) and the "guest channel" for allowing visitors password-controlled internet access without giving them access to your network, or your network passkey or PIN. That's what led me to buy this router -along with the 1000BaseT ethernet capability to maximize the time before obsolesence makes me retire it.
Other than my initial failure to securely connect my ethernet cable for the configuration, everything went swimmingly. I did not use the easy-install-disk, but instead used the alternative method of configuring via the browser page. The manual (which you have to print for yourself or read on screen) should be sufficient to guide you thru unless you really have no familiarity with wireless networks and computer networking in general. (I just don't like installing unnecessary software, so I avoid the wizards if possible.)
I've had this one up and running for just over a month, and no problems w/ wireless connection of my office laptop nor our home desktop (running ethernet to that location would be very inconvenient). I did have some initial problems with wireless connection of my new iPhone -but that could be just as much due to my "iIgnorance" as anything, and was solved by powering off the iPhone for about 15 minutes, and when repowered, it connected easily, and has every time I've come home since. We have a bit over 1900 sq ft downstairs and roughly 900 upstairs, and my laptop survey shows 270Mbps connections thruout the living spaces. This despite the fact that all interior walls of our home are sheathed with 1/2" plywood each side, then with drywall, and the router is located on a small shelf high in the closet under the staircase. (out of sight is something my spousal unit is particularly happy about)
My only near-miss issue is that the router is intended to stand vertically, as shown in the illustrations, and with the antennae raised as they should be, is much taller than my old router. The antennae just barely clear the ceiling whereas the old one wasn't close. Still, it would fit on the average bookshelf and doesn't have a very big footprint.
