Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Belkin Nostromo Speedpad n52Customer Review: Love it so much that I bought 2 of them. Summary: 5 Stars
This is the single best PC game controler available. I had the older n50 modle then upgraded to the n52 - and got a second one for my laptop.
Good:
1) Ergonomic - Especialy handy for those who game on a laptop, or who game for long long long hours at a time.
2) Versitle - As others have noted it can be programmed for use with ANY software. Not just games.
3) Easy to use - Programming is point and click, and you can costomize it. Set the controler up any way you like it - make it work for you.
4) Durable - I have been known to sit my 2-year old on my lap, give him my second n52 as a distraction and game with my first n52. He will bang it on the desk as I bash monsters in D2. Everything still works.
Bad:
1) Sticky keys - This prolem seems to have gone away with a little use.
2) Blue Screen of Death - If I remove the device while the computer is on (even using "add/remove hardware") it will lock up my computer. I found this out when I was traveling with my laptop. Easy fix, don't remove the device while the computer is on.
Customer Review: not just for gamers Summary: 5 Stars
I picked up my n52 recently because I was looking for an accessory that would help me use my computer more efficiently. I have to say that I am terribly pleased with the ease of use, construction, and durability of this tool.
I like the stiffness of the action of the keys, and although I have a fairly small hand, I have no trouble reaching any of the keys. The mouse wheel probably should not have been contracted out to the lower bidder, but It is not the worst I have ever used.
Within ten minutes of loading the software, I was typing away with perfect ease, and I spent the first evening developing a pattern of key assignments that would let me flit between at least three different programs with ease and perform program specific tasks with minimal key-strokes in each program.
The hand rest is brilliant and feels like an arch support for my hand.
I would reccomend this tool for anyone who works with computer aided design or another field that involves complex imput.
Customer Review: Functional, despite complexity. learning curve depends on game Summary: 5 Stars
I've been using my speedpad for several weeks now, primarily for FPS. This thing works great for Unreal Tournament 2004 and other FPS games with simple controls. For games like Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon which require a larger number of functions, this controller would have a steeper learning curve. I was able to use it immediately, however, because of it's natural feel and default setup. It's very much like an ergonomic keyboard, only more ergonomic. While the defaut setup is very useful, programming the speedpad brings out the expanse of possibilities. The macro functions are amazing, you can custom program your messages to teammates and enemies, as well as other multibutton functions into one key. The programming utility is easy to use and availble for windows and mac.
I would recommend this controller to anyone playing FPS on a laptop especially, because of the limits of a laptop keyboard, but it's a great extention for any gaming machine that accepts USB.
Customer Review: Good for ALL gaming Summary: 5 Stars
I read the review above and I have to agree with them, this thing is awesome for gaming in general. I play primarily FPS, but also RTS. I have yet to find a game it isn't worth using in. They keys are a lot better lined up for your fingers than the keys on the keyboard, and with the "shift" capabilites you can have each button do multiple things. I have been a user of the speedpad since the original n50. I love that I can create macro's that will do things I can't do in the game, like the dodge move in original UT.
I also found that since my hands are always in the same place, I can create a template to use and apply that to each new game without having to remember what the keyboard key is for that action. (ex. button 5 is always forward, regardless of the game.)
Just be sure to follow the install instructions as it can get tricky and not work if you don't.
Customer Review: The best just got better Summary: 5 Stars
I have been using N50 for six months now, very please with the outcome of my purchase ($20 good buy), but when I heard that Belkin was releasing a new version (n52), I just had to have it. So I bought it having great expectations, and my first impresion wasnt that good, I didnt feel it that confortable, but that was because I was thinking of it as the N50, but after two weeks of using it, I love this thing, it does everything that the N50 does but with a lot more options, I use it mostly for 1st person shooters, and it works great, but I aslo think that this is intened for people that use the arrows, and for people that can manage with 20 keys, for me is more than enough, my fragging % is a lot better, but at first it was a lot worse, but is like all in life, it takes time getting use to it, but once you get a hang of it, you will love it. I defently recomend it.
