Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Belkin Mini Surge 3 Outlet Wall Mount with USB ChargerCustomer Review: Road-worthy for the travelling consultant... Summary: 5 Stars
While some people have commented about the term "mini" being subjective, rest assured that this device is not really any larger than if you took a normal surge protector and cut it off at three outlets. There's a small bit of overhead for the two USB plugs but that's about it. This device has earned a spot in my bag and follows me all over the country on travel; it charges my phone and MP3 player at the same time just fine.
What people should be aware of is that just because their phone uses a USB interconnect, either regular size or mini, does not mean that they necessarily conform to USB specifications. I've seen some phones and MP3 players use USB connectors but come with a charger that puts out 1.5A or more, well outside of the 500mA USB specification. What's my point? This product does what it says - it charges up to two USB devices at the same time; individual results will depend on whether or not your device(s) comply to the USB specification or simply use the connection for convenience. :)
Yet even if your device comes with a high current charger, many devices allow for charging with a computer's USB port - meaning that they must be rated to only draw upwards of 500mA. If your device complies with that, chances are you're going to be 100% happy with this device - I know I am!
Customer Review: Great solution for traveling Summary: 5 Stars
I've just returned from a trip in which this Belkin surge protector / charger really proved its worth. The product was brand-new, so it was also a good opportunity to try it out. The particular travel situation was an older European-made boat (built way before humankind depended on wall plugs to survive), and the few plugs in the cabin were round. So there I was with the usual travel paraphernalia: two camera battery chargers, a laptop, a geotagger, MP3 player, a smartphone (for which, thankfully, there was rarely a signal)... etc. As is wont to happen in such situations, all batteries seemed to go flat at the same time. And here's the beauty of the Belkin: one plug adapter (the device is of the three-prong type), stick it to the wall plug, charge everything simultaneously. It worked beautifully and realiably, delivering perfectly charged camera batteries, laptop, geotagger and player (USB-charged), you name it.
Although the Belkin resembles a small brick, it's not heavy and easily fit in my hand luggage. It lived on the cabin's wall plug for the duration of the trip and did its job. This gadget will travel with me every time from now on.
Customer Review: My travel buddy Summary: 5 Stars
I have a number of different tools to help me when trying to plug things in. When I travel, I always take the Belkin mini surge protector with USB charger. I plug it in by the desk in my hotel room and it gives me all the outlets I need to charge things overnight. I especially like the two USB charging ports, since I can plug in my iPhone and one other device to charge, without having to keep the computer running all night. Having three power connectors lets me connect my computer and anything else I have along, and have some assurance that there is surge protection. For my everyday use, I carry a Power Strip Space Saver from Think Geek (http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/travelpower/9713/). That lets me share an outlet with someone, so I can plug in my computer even if all the outlets at the airport are in use. I just ask if I can share the outlet, plug in the space saver, and then plug in the other person's device in one outlet and mine in the other. So one of those is in the front pocket of my computer bag. But the Belkin mini surge protector with USB chargers is in my traveling bag and I would leave home (on a trip) without it.
Customer Review: Great for Outlets Near Your Desk. Has Protected My Gear! Summary: 5 Stars
I can verify that this surge protector really works. I have an outlet near one of my office desks where I test various electronics gear and one of these Belkin Mini Surge 3OUT protectors is plugged into it. In the other plug of the same outlet I do not have a surge protector. Anyhow I was testing two of the same device, both similar to wireless routers, and I was short on outlets so one of the devices was plugged into the Belkin Mini Surge while the other device was plugged directly into the wall. A storm came through and we lost power briefly, a couple seconds, and the next day I noticed that one of the devices was fried. The device plugged into the Belkin Mini Surge was fine but the device plugged directly into the wall was dead.
I love the fact that the protector is vertical so it follows the flow of the plug and takes up minimal space. If you need a couple outlets near your desk and don't want to have to coil the cord of a normal surge protector then this is the device for you.
Customer Review: Bulky, but still half the size of a standard surge protector Summary: 5 Stars
As an occasional business traveler, packing a surge protector is one of my frequent annoyances. They fit fine in my luggage, but not in my laptop bag, and I still have to carry chargers for my cell phone, phone earpiece, and iPod.
The Belkin 3OUT is the nearly perfect solution to this problem. It's about half the length of a traditional surge protector, and fits nicely in my laptop bag. It also allows me to carry two standard USB cords and charge my smaller mobile equipment. And the rotating plug base makes it easy to plug in and not interfere with other items using an adjacent socket.
Other reviews have rightly noted that it's a little bulky. The width and length are fine; it's the depth of the unit that makes it unwieldy -- it's 2 inches thick, plus another 1¼ inch for the plug and its base. But that's a minimal annoyance to get the portability, surge protection, and USB features.
Highly recommended for anyone who travels with their electronics.
