Customer Review: The real deal
Summary: 5 Stars

The real deal for the best price - free shipping too.
Works like a charm.

Customer Review: Works pretty good - some issues - some hints
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a combination of Belkins cable and Microsoft's Easy Transfer program.

The cable is great.
Microsoft's Easy Transfer worked pretty good. It did a very good job of transferring documents and settings from my XP laptop to my new vista laptop. Only a couple of problems:
-The Norton firewall programs running on the to PCs prevented the transfer from working. Easy enough fix, temporarily turned off the firewall software.
-The Easy Transfer software stopped working on the Vista PC because of the buffer overflow error on the new laptops' touch-pad driver. Weird, but again an easy enough fix, ended the touch pad program and used the mouse instead. Closed other unnecessary programs to be on the safe side.

Once the transfer was complete, I checked everything out and found a couple of things:
-about 95% of the transfer was perfect
-slight problem with Outlook, My Outlook configuration is very complex, multiple profiles each with multiple email account and most of those have multiple data files associated. One Outlook data file didn't transfer because it was in a weird location on the old PC. Which leads to...
-Files not under documents and settings don't transfer such as
---one of my outlook data files at the root of the C drive
---Quickbooks data files that were in the Programs folder
-One of the printers settings didn't transfer right, again an easy fix

In summary:
The cable and software do a good job, just remember:
-close unnecessary programs, specially the firewalls
-files in not in documents and settings need to be done manually. If I took the time to choose those additional files rather than just use the default in the Easy Transfer software, they probably would have transfered just fine.
-I installed the programs (office, quickbooks, etc.) on the new vista PC prior to the transfer. I was concearned about trying to transfer programs from on PC to another. I liked the idea just tranfering documents and settings.
-The cable come with other programs that allow you link any PCs to manually transfer files.

Customer Review: File transfer for dummies...
Summary: 4 Stars

And I am one. Every problem I encountered with the transfer of files from my XP based CPU to the new Vista O.S. was directly related to my failure to follow the very straight forward instructions before I started the process.

Once I understood proprietary software and most executables are not accommodated by these cables requiring the user to manually pre-install on the target Vista system, the process was entirely painless. I only rated the product four stars because that requirement can be time consuming or a major encumbrance for those who may have had OEM software or can't find product keys for reinstallation, etc.

However, if your are attempting to accomplish basic transfer of data files, music and photos from XP to Vista, I highly recommend these cables.

Customer Review: Works Good!
Summary: 4 Stars

I bought a new laptop and was trying to move a lot of things from my old computer. Finally, I bought the Easy Transfer cable and moved every thing in a couple of hours. It would have been better to start out with the Easy Transfer cable, as it complicates the process when some things are already moved...Anyways, the cable worked fine for moving things from my old XP computer to a new Vista computer. You need to take time in carefully selecting what you want move and be patient to be sure the process is fully completed. The speed of the transfer itself was very fast.
I did not have any of the problems mentioned in some of the reviews. My only "problem" was that I ended up moving a few things I had not intended to move. I would recommend the cable to anyone who needs to move a lot of material.

Customer Review: file transfer - son of laplink
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this gadget to help replacing an old laptop running XP with a new one, running Vista, the latest pile of sh..., err... software from Microsoft. It transfers files well, but I did not use the account and property transfer, because I did not trust it. I needed the file transfer because the old laptop cannot burn CD's reliably anymore.
I will eventually burn CD's from the old system to keep as an archive, before I wipe it and replace it with software fit for humans to use, linux. Belkin, or the OSS developers should produce linux drivers for the gadget, to allow transfers to linux systems.
In truth, most of what this gadget does can be done with a ethernet crossover cable, so it mostly for lazy or ignorant lusers.
