Customer Review: Cable works for Windows 7-XP and XP-XP; but I use different software

I use this cable to transfer files between two Windows XP computers, with no problems. I can control the transfer from either computer, and copy or move files in either direction. Similarly, I can transfer files between a Windows 7 computer and a Windows XP computer. Again, I can control the transfer from either computer, and copy or move files in either direction. (I don't have a Windows Vista computer to test.) The Belkin cables nominally intended for Windows Vista and for Windows 7 look slightly different from each other, but they seem to be identical in terms of speed and compatibility.
However, I do not use, and did not install, the Belkin software. Instead, I use powerful file manager software plus the Microsoft Windows Easy Transfer (WET) software (included with the Belkin cable). The file manager is intended for power users; the learning curve is relatively long, and the software's capabilities are beyond the needs of typical users. This shareware software is Total Commander (TC), written by Christian Ghisler in Switzerland. I already owned this software, or I could have downloaded it from Ghisler's site.
I installed WET on each computer, but I exited from WET after installation, before WET could control any synchronizing. After that, I never used WET directly. I had installed TC on each computer. On the computer to be treated as the server, I use the TC menu commands Net / Port connection to other PC / Server/ USB. On the client computer, I use the commands Net / Port connection to other PC / Client. As a result, the client computer is displayed in one panel, and the server computer in the other panel. I can select files, typically by using the space bar (not the mouse, which makes it too easy to de-select files by accident). I can copy files (F5), etc. Much of the time, I use Commands / Synchronize Dirs. I can not change file contents on the server, from the client; I only can copy or delete. Descript.ion comment files are not synchronized automatically.
The Belkin cable allows transfers at 17-19 megabytes/second, if the files are large. If many small files are transferred, then the speed can be much slower; this may have something to do with the underlying FTP protocol. If the server directory to be synchronized contains many files, it takes a relatively long time to pass the file list back to the client. Of course, if either computer is doing something else at the same time, such as a virus scan, then the transfer speed can be much slower.
To summarize, if you are a power user, then you can bypass the Belkin software and have a quite satisfactory USB link between two PCs operating under Windows XP or Windows 7 (or I assume Windows Vista). Because the Belkin software can be bypassed, either the Belkin Windows 7 or Vista cable can be purchased. If you are not patient enough to become moderately familiar with a different piece of software intended for power users, and are not willing to use the concise but accurate help (F1) in TC, then the solution I have outlined is not appropriate for your needs.
