Purchased this printer about 2 weeks ago for $70. Could not believe that one could get a decent laser printer for that cheap but, so far, no complaints. Reason I went with this model is that I have one at work that gets a workout on a daily basis and, it has not given us any problems.
Read in some reviews that printing items like envelopes were a problem but, I can't understand why anyone had problems with this, they printed fine for me. Only difference I can see is that the path through the manual feed is straight out through the back of the unit but, this was explained in the user manual.
Able to get re-furb toner for under $40. Read that for you will need to
replace the drum after approximately 10,000 - 11,000 pages but even that is available for about $80.
Yes, the case is made out of plastic but, try and find peripherals that aren't these days.

I got this printer carefully reading reviews and feedback about...it turns so easy to set up, and got it printing in just 2 minutes install..some people complaint about setup process..NO..just do what it says, install the drivers first then plug the usb...printing speed is out of reach for ink jets printers...Image printing even for a black only printer turns out to be good too..I am glad got away from ink mess and money waste, there is no way to compare laser to ink...If you are looking for a printer to do the job fast and easy you are right about this one..no more dried ink worries, no more $40 inks for printing about 150 pages maximum, this have a toner for 1,500 pages for $44 plus a for 20,000 for $80... I did no mistake, if you want wireless they have a same unit with wireless, anyhow, I did set mine wireless with printing sharing in the network...so we print from laptops or desktop on it...Customer Review: Great little printer - but learn the low toner trick!

Love the printer, and the price was amazing. As everyone has said, the starter toner cartridge does not last too long - unless you tape over the little window that shows the toner level. I got hundreds more pages from the current cartridge. In fact, I was traveling last weekend, the hotel I was staying at had one of these printers in the business area, and it said "out of order" showing the toner light. I popped out the cartridge, covered up the window, and slid it back in, and we were good to go!
I think Brother should have disabled the feature that shuts down printing when toner low is detected - leave the toner light on, but keep printing - why stop?
When I put my next new cartridge in, I'm going to remove the tape, so the toner low detect can work again, then when it comes on, I tape it up, and order a new cartridge -
Besides that - great printer so far!

Needed a good black type printer but found that most all ink jet printers are also color printers and very costly to maintain. I did not need color but tried several ink jet printers that had color cartridges. If you do not need color stay away from those printers that require both color and black cartridges to operate. Some ink jet color printers will not operate without both color and black cartridges in the printer. A word of caution for those of you who do not realize this. The 2140 laser printer far exceeded the print quality than did the ink printers that I tried and it produced non smearing sharp quality prints which I had never gotten with ink. I hope Brother continues to do whatever they are doing because the 2140 Brother printer is really a good buy for home and office both. I gave this 2140 printer four stars because I believe that it is worth the price and quality.Customer Review: Good Product, Quick Service

The Brother HL 2140 printer was recognized by by Linux operating
system on the first try. (Ubuntu 10.04) I am very pleased
with all my low-end Brother printers. I operate an Internet
Cafe on Saturday mornings at my church. All of the users
have no problems with black and white printing on Brother laser printers.
The Brother printers aren't as easy to setup on "Windows" as they are
on "Ubuntu Linux". The Brother HL2140, a medium speed computer, and
Ubuntu 10.04 with Open Office make for excellent word processing.
