Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother HL-2140 Laser PrinterCustomer Review: Amazing Laser Printer Summary: 5 Stars
Remember when black & white laser printers cost hundreds, if not thousands?
Wow, not any more, as this fantastic little Brother printer proves.
This little printer is completely silent in operation -- no loud, annoying clunks like those produced with every page by my old HP -- it's twice as fast as the HP was, and it spits out beautiful sharp output with no paper-handling issues.
It also has an ON/OFF button and pause button (the HP lacked both, and I missed them).
The only thing I can grouse about is the lack of an included printer cable -- apparently none of the printer companies include them any more -- but you can pick up a standard USB printer cable for ten bucks or less.
The Brother was also a snap to set up with Windows XP -- no problemo.
If you are looking for a fast, high-quality, and incredibly affordable black & white laser printer, this Brother gets my highest recommendation.
Customer Review: Good Printer, but BEWARE of the "Low-Toner" Sensor Summary: 5 Stars
IMPORTANT NOTE TO DEFEND AGAINST "LOW-TONER TRICK"
On the right side of the toner cartridge there is a little round window that the printer uses to "see" the toner level. It is important to cover this with a piece of opaque tape. Otherwise the printer will give a "low toner" warning and refuse to work, even though there is still plenty of toner in the cartridge.
For years now, printer manufacturers have been using the "low toner"/"low ink" trick to force customers to buy more toner/ink than necessary - at prices that are often nothing short of gouging. This should be illegal. I threw my last Canon printer in the trash because of this.
Despite this, I highly recommend the HL-2140 for the simple fact that it is so easy to defend yourself against the "low toner trick". This will save lots of money. All other characteristics of the printer, except the manual paper feeder, are excellent.
Customer Review: Great personal printer. Summary: 5 Stars
The Brother HL-2140 was not my first choice in a personal laser printer, but I have been extremely happy with my purchase. The setup of the printer was easy through my Vista based computer using the enclosed setup guide. I even set it up as a shared network printer and loaded the software on my older desktop computer as well as my laptop. It has worked flawlessly in the one month I have had it installed.
I was looking for a printer with a small height so that it would fit nicely on an open shelf in my computer desk. It's small size (less than 7" tall) is just perfect for tight situations. The quality of the output and the speed is great, especially considering that I paid less than $60 for it from Amazon. I would probably not choose this printer for a busy office, but it is perfect for home, small office and student use. Do not sell this printer short. It packs a lot of punch into a small footprint at a great price.
Customer Review: Definitely worth it! Summary: 5 Stars
This is a great laser printer, especially at this price. I'm a very skeptical buyer and read all the reviews I can find before buying. I'm extremely happy with this printer. It doesn't seem loud to me, my paper doesn't curl, I have no trouble feeding special paper in one sheet at a time, and I do all I can to conserve energy anyway (it IS energy star compliant), but I turn it on only when I need it and I turn it off when I'm done, so I don't have any trouble with power usage. The cartridge that came with it said 1000 copy trial, and I used the black tape trick just to be sure, so I'm sure I will be pleased with copy volume. I've found the print quality excellent with absolutely no streaking or anything wrong. In this extremely dry climate, laser is the ONLY way to go. I could replace this printer three times a year for what I spent on inkjet cartridges in the past year. My only regret is that I didn't buy it sooner.
Customer Review: Laser printer Summary: 5 Stars
For someone looking for a low-cost, reliable, b/w Brother HL-2140 Personal Laser Printerlaser printer without a scanner this is a nice choice. It is small and fits nicely on my desktop. Set-up was extremely simple. Skip the drivers on the disk and download the updated versions directly from the website. I've only had the printer a few weeks and don't print a lot so I can't say how long the toner will last. I bought a laser printer because cheap color ink-jet printers were costing a fortune in ink. I had one issue where the wi-fi connection was lost so I simply had to reconnect it through my Apple Airport "add a printer" menu item. I connected the printer directly to the usb port in my computer for a quick copy before I found how to correct the problem. This model is a few years old and has lots of very positive reviews.
