Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Brother HL-2140 Laser Printer

Customer Review: Great on Mac OSX: Great Personal Printer
Summary: 5 Stars

Pros: Can print on envelopes, card stock, and transparencies (these are just the ones I've tried). Prints quickly and reliably (I have only had a jam problem when printing envelopes).

Cons: The printer is loud when printing and uses a lot of energy.

I am teacher who prints A LOT, and so I went with this laser printer over the ink-eating inkjets. If you are worried about mac compatibility, look no further. This printer is truly plug-in and it works automatically. If you buy an airport express, you can plug this printer in and use it wirelessly, but it does not have wireless capability on it's own. This printer is great because of it's 300 dpi toner save mode. Although the TN-360 toner says 2,600 page yield, on the toner save mode you can print much more than this. I have had the printer for nine months and I use it on a regular basis, and I am still on my first toner cartridge (I used up the starter cartridge). Basically, I have been using the same toner cartridge for over six months. Since I do a lot of student worksheets on the computer, and I don't want to have to walk all the way down to have them copied in the copy room, it is nice that these toner cartridges last so long (it costs less than $0.02 a page when printing using this printer).

We used this printer to print all of the wedding invitation envelopes and it worked like a charm. I would highly recommend this to the relatively high use user who wants a reliable printer that prints relatively good copies (not the best for detailed graphics).

Customer Review: Simple and easy with Macs
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this printer for about a year. It has printed well over 10,000 pages and is still going strong. It is a simple laser printer without a lot of features but for black and white printing of documents this printer is excellent.

I have had both PCs and Macs and find that Brother printers are the easiest and quickest to set up with Macs wirelessly (I have another color printer/scanner/fax from Brother). In both cases I returned other printers because they were hard to set up and support was poor. I don't know if Brother support is good or not as I have not had to use it yet. Setup for this printer was a breeze for all 3 computers in the house. I don't think I spent more than 1/2 hour setting everything up.

It is very fast compared to ink jet printers. Two copies of a 300 page document took less than 5 minutes and probably less than 2 minutes if you take out time to realize the printer was out of paper and add paper.

They say a toner cartridge will last about 2600 pages but my experience has been they last longer (I may not be very picky about print quality though). The toner cartridge that came with the printer was suppose to last 250 pages but printed out four 100 page research proposals and the print was not fading.

In short - I would highly recommend this printer if you want to use it wirelessly with macs and have need of a simple, fast, inexpensive and dependable printer. I have not used this printer with a PC yet so I cannot vouch for how easy they are to use and set up with PCs.

Customer Review: Perfect for our use, inexpensive and works very well
Summary: 5 Stars

This printer is perfect for us. We don't print pictures or in color at all. We print black in white and probably only 25 pages a week at the max. We have had several inkjet printers before and the ink will clog up if you don't use it often. With a laser printer we have eliminated this problem. These toner cartridges will last for thousands of pages instead of a couple hundred pages which are what the typical inkjet cartridge will last.

This printer can print up to 23 pages per minute which is plenty fast enough for us. The paper tray only holds half a ream of paper but that is because this laser printer is so compact compared to most.

This printer installed and was working within minutes and has worked flawlessly so far. It prints very crisp and clear even on the economy setting in order to conserve toner. Some laser printers will take a while to warm up but it doesn't take long at all with this printer.

I like that this printer is energy star certified because energy savings is very important to me. There is also a power switch on the side so it can be turned off while not in use.

This is a very good printer for the cost. You can certainly purchase printers with many more options but I doubt you will find a better deal for the price than this printer. I would caution you to make sure you have room for the printer on your desk before purchasing. Some smaller desks might not have enough room on it.

Okay, now here's an update from me.
Today is 20 November 2009.
Good little printer, at least mine is a good one.
Again, simple and fast.
The Brother website adds a lot of value to the machine.
Excellent resource for everyday help.
In my case, like what are the status lights telling me this time?
Or, can you guide me through that paper-jam tutorial again?
Because I forget.

Update #2-
21 January 2010
After 4 1/2 months of using this basic little laser printer.
I just now carefully read and re-read what I had typed in the above two parts of this review.
Every word of it is still true.
You can read the above all you want.
Heck, feel free to even read between the lines if you want to.
I'm still glad that I bought this little printer.
Because it's a good one.

Customer Review: In Love With This Printer
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this printer for Christmas because I'm writing all the time and need to constantly print things. Ink jet cartriges were starting to add up, so I went the laser route, and am so glad that this is the printer I got. I have been using it for about two and a half months now and have had no problems at all. If the error light ever came on, it usually meant the paper was out, or a paper jam (which has only happened twice on really long prints). A couple times, the error light has come on and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. Turning the machine off and back on fixed the problem each time.

I decided not to write this review until the original toner cartrige ran out. The warning light finally came on today. I might get another 50 pages out of it before I must switch it out. But impressively enough, I've probably printed over 1000 pages on this little thing since I've gotten it. I can't even imagine how many I'll get out of a full-sized toner cartridge.

Overall, I'm thrilled about this printer, and will use it until it blows up. Even at full price, this thing is a steal, and I'd highly recommend it. And better yet, this thing isn't much bigger than your standard ink jet printer, which is great news for small college dorms and crowded office spaces.

I hope this helps. Have a great day.
