Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Bose TriPort In-Ear Headphones - Headphones ( ear-bud ) - black

Customer Review: Excellent sound quality.
Summary: 5 Stars

Sound quality:
Very nice. Good, full range of sound with low bass frequencies. I have tried many headphones before, some Sony ones (can't remember model), Sennheiser hd202, Sennheiser cx-300, Etymotic (some $100+ ones, can't remember model), and others. None of them can play the lower bass frequencies like the Bose Triport ones can. The thing is, until you hear it in the Bose ones, you didn't even know they existed. Balance is very good between bass, mids, and treble. Clarity is pristine. You can actually hear the difference between low and high bitrate MP3s.

Some have claimed that these headphones are "bass heavy" or have "weak treble." I beg to differ. High quality recordings with high dynamic range deliberately make the bass louder because that's the way it was meant to be heard. I think those people have been listening to low quality recordings that use brickwall limiting, so when they increase the volume, the bass is very distorted and muddy. And so, nasty sounding bass gets translated to "bass heavy" or "too much bass." That's an input problem, which is not Bose's fault. :)

The other problem is that when people are accustomed to listening to low quality headphones that have weak frequency response. They only hear loud mid-high sounds, so they are desensitized to those frequencies, but they remain sensitive to lower frequencies. In other words, they may be "bass virgins." Listen to these for a couple weeks, and you will not be able to go back to those headphones. I would say that the Bose ones have probably the best balance yet in the sub-$100 range.

Build quality:
Cable is nice and thick. Very high quality rubber that can take a beating. Also, alot of headphones will amplify the sound of the cable rustling against your shirt, which produces a very nasty and annoying thudding sound. Thankfully these ones do not have this problem.

Noise isolation:
Light noise isolation (just the way I like it, actually). I'm one of them weird folk who don't like to be completely detached from reality when listening to music. But if I crank up the volume a little higher, then that can be achieved quite easily.

Comfort:
These are the updated version, so they come with 3 different sizes of ear pieces. I strongly prefer these to the in-ear style headphones. Also comes with some useless lanyard you wear behind your neck, but the clip is very useful.

Other notes:
Comes with pretty nice leather carrying case, but no spindle to wind the cable around. I've seen pictures of the case for the predecessor, and I think I would have preferred that one over the new one.

Silly black/white stripe design, but hate it or love it.

Not sure if "TriPort" means "triple driver", but there is a board/chip towards the lower (plug) end of the cable that processes and enhances/amplifies the sound. However, output is very low because it is not the in-ear type, hence the speakers are not directly inside your ear. I have to turn up the volume higher than with other headphones, but this is not a big deal for me.

Many headphones will have a very tight "sweetspot" where sound quality is optimal. Deviating from this sweetspot will usually result in sound quality and volume being reduced drastically. The Bose ones sound perfect hanging loosely (but comfortably) from your ear.

I have not tried other ~$100 headphones (Shure E2/E3 series, Ultimate Ears Super.fi, etc.) because every single one of them consistently has reviews proclaiming their lack of bass sensitivity.

About:
I have had these for about 6 months now, and I listen mostly to classic rock (van halen, tom petty, jimi hendrix, pink floyd, eagles, santana, bob marley, etc.), older hip hop (dre, tupac, eminem, etc.), pop (mariah carey, alicia keys, rod stewart, etc.), classical & new age (beethoven, jon schmidt, mozart, etc.). I've never really had a problem where there was an "odd" song that just sounded weird with the Bose headphones, although I've run into those problems before with other headphones.

Input devices are Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 4 (mostly), Sony Ericsson K800i, and various MP3 devices including iPods.
