Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Bose SoundDock digital music system for iPod (White)Customer Review: What can I say, it's a BOSE! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had my Bose Sounddock for just a few weeks and I already love it. The sound quality is just amazing and the thing gets loud as heck! I know there isn't the aux sound input, but honestly, i don't own a CD player and i can attach an ipod shuffle through an accessory adapter (griffin or kensington). I mean, the thing, charges my ipod, and plays it back with awesome sound as soon as i plug it in! How simple is that? As good as the sounddock is, there are a few minor flaws:
first, the dock inserts A&B don't work too well for the new 5th gen ipods, as they are a little bit loose. However, you can easily fix that problem, i just taped a strip of rubber onto the back of the insert's hole (the space between the back of the ipod and the edge of the insert when the ipod is plugged in) and it holds the ipod upright just fine. If you have the 60gb 5G ipod, you can also try to plug it into the A insert (even though Bose advises you to use the B insert) and it fits, but fits a bit tight.
if you want something that sounds better for the same price, go buy a set of Bose Companion 3 Speakers and the iPod AV Kit and you can have pretty much the same thing, but with a better remote and better sound, with the sacrifice of protability for about $50 more than the sounddock.
As far as looks go, get the black version, it meshes well with both the white and black ipods, the white one only goes well with the white ipod.
update on Feb 24: ever since the 2nd gen nano was introduced, Bose has been supplying a new insert for it. However, the new insert is not specific for the 2nd gen nano. It is actually a piece of rubber that will adapt any of the iPod universal dock plates (available from Apple) to the Sounddock's docking well. Even if you don't have a 2nd gen nano, you should get one of these from Bose, as one of these will enable you to futureproof the sounddock for a while. Finally, your 5th Gen iPods should fit more snugly as they will be using their standard universal dock plates. This was a good move on Bose's part. Another issue is the lack of external input. [....]
update on April 26: when the 2nd gen shuffle was introduced, it was known that the shuffle now connects and syncs with a proprietary headphone jack. If you take a look at the ipod shuffle dock (2nd gen, 1st gen one is just a usb extension cable) take a good careful look and notice that it has three rungs. Now, take a look at the jack on the earbuds that came with the shuffle, it has two rungs and is just as long. What does that mean? the two rungs in common (the top two) are the audio signal rungs. This leaves the third rung as the charging/syncing rung. Now, Griffin makes a dock adapter for 2nd gen shuffle. Notice that it has a switch on it that switches between charging and audio. What can that logically conclude? That switch controls which rung is active, when charging/syncing, the third rung is active while in audio mode, the top two are active (as they carry the audio signal). So, what do u do? leave the switch on audio mode, DO NOT PUT IT ON CHARGING MODE, plug it in your sounddock, attach an audio extension cable and VOILA, you now have external audio input to your Sounddock!!!!!! I used the extension cable that came with my QuietComfort 2 headphones. Total Cost: $13 for me (price on amazon fluctuates from time to time).
