Customer Review: Great Sound - Okay Package
Summary: 5 Stars

I love these speakers - but there are several caveats you need to know before shelling out a substantial pile of cash to get them.

THE GOOD

1) Awesome sound - solid range and great bass from a small system
2) Plug and Play
3) Loud enough for one room party
4) Good at conversational levels - dinner jazz background etc.
5) Good remote (for volume and on/off (weaker for more advanced functions)

THE BAD

1) Not so portable (bulky and over 5 lbs.) - I would not easily take them on trips unless I knew they'd be used a lot.
2) Weak battery life - They lasted about four hours on medium power (they are rated for three hours on full power). Not good enough for a day on the beach and a back up battery is $90 plus.
3) There are products that sound as good or better if you don't want portable and longer lasting sound if you do.

Like I said, I love these speakers. But doggone they are expensive. I'd love them a lot more at $200 but that's not likely to happen anytime soon. However if you want world class sound in a portable system (dinners on the deck and single room tunes), this is a great speaker system even at the price.

Customer Review: Stupendous sound from such a size
Summary: 5 Stars

I picked up one of these for the bedroom. It really shines when hooked up to a 3G iPhone... You not only get remote-control access to your iTunes songs on the iPhone, or over wifi/3G, you get fantastic sound from music generation or streaming apps such as Easy Relax (free configurable ambient noise generator, fantastic to sleep to), last.fm (the "recommended radio" feature is excellent), Pandora, the built-in alarms, incoming phone call rings, and other application sources of sound. I just wish the remote could send forward-track messages to applications other than the built in iPod software player.

They have some kind of anti-vibration technology going on so even at loud volumes and with lots of bass, the unit doesn't vibrate at all. Knock Bose all you want, they still have some smart people there...

Trust me- You will not believe the sound from this thing, and since it's portable you can now bring it anywhere- party on the patio or roof, other rooms, just outside the bathroom door while you shower (it's probably not moisture-proof!), on business trips, in a dorm room, etc.

It is not cheap but you are certainly getting what you are paying for with this device.

Customer Review: Another five star review

I've owned my SoundDock Portable for about two years and love it. Great sound in a small, portable package.

I was looking for something I could take outside while sitting on the deck or laying in the hammock as well as on vacation. The SDP has been perfect for this. I've taken it to Hawaii, Mexico, Belize and Florida. It's lightweight and fits perfectly in my roller carry-on bag on the airplane.

About a year ago, I noticed the battery life was going down, so I dropped by my local Bose store to see if by any chance it was still under warranty. Unfortunately, the warranty had expired by about a month. Nevertheless, the sales person told me to bring the battery in and they would swap it for a new one anyway, free of charge. Now that's great customer service!

The only knock I have against it is that the dock was made for the 5th generation iPods and below, so I have to be careful when I dock my much thinner iPhone 3G and iPod touch. I mostly stick to my 5G Classic iPod with this unit for that reason. It would be good if Bose released an iPhone/iPod Touch dock adaptor.

Great speaker system and first-rate customer service.

Customer Review: Head To Head With The BEST..
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me start with telling you, I am a total toy fanatic. I love my music and the way it is reproduced for my listening pleasure. I was given an iKick for Christmas 2 years ago. I like this quite a bit. I then bought both Klipsch docking stations for my 160GB iPod classic. I also have a few of the JBL iPod docking stations. All of these have good sound and I enjoy all of these placed around different areas of my home. I recently bought the Bose portable iPod docking station along with all of the accessories which help make my Bose into an incredible sound making toy !! I love the total beautiful sound it makes. I also like being able to carry my Bose along with my iPod anywhere I want. This L'il cutie ROCKS. It has a very rich and full sound about it. I listen to it while in the shower, the garage, the back yard etc. The iKick has a comparable sound to the Bose however, I cannot carry it around like I can the Bose. All things considered, my Bose wins hands down. I will keep all of my docking stations as they all have their own little niche to fill. The Bose has great sound along with its portability, it's a Big Time winner and a keeper. "Try it, you'll like it".

Customer Review: Pleasantly surprised
Summary: 5 Stars

My wife bought this for christmas and initially I thought it was a huge waste of money. While I'm not convinced it's worth the cash, it does sound really, really good. Bordering on amazing. We have a decent home stereo with real tower speakers and the Bose crushes it, hands down. Especially at lower (background?) volume, where the bigger speakers aren't really working well yet. But even at higher volumes the Bose sounds great. Excellent highs, good (but not thundering) bass, and a very smooth overall sound.
Also pleased that the remote works with the ipod as well. Looking forward to bringing it out to the patio during the summer. My only gripes would be it only docks with Apple products (duh, I know, but that means we must keep buying Apple music players!) and if you're not facing the unit sound quality drops off dramatically. I know, why wouldn't it, but it's very noticeable if it's on just for background and you leave the room.
Bose has been doing this a long time so I shouldn't be surprised, but I am impressed.

Note: my wife mistakenly bought the standard, non-portable version which we returned for the battery powered.
