Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of AudioVox XVSAP1V1 XM Skydock for iPhone/iTouchCustomer Review: AMAZING! Summary: 5 Stars
OK. My review may be a bit premature as I just purchased this item two days ago; however, thus far, I am unbelievably satisfied with the product.
I have a 2002 Nissan Altima which does not have the auxiliary in jack located on the outside of the stereo unit. This has always prevented me from purchasing an XM plug and play radio that I could also use in my car. I know I could have had a professional install a unit; however, I wasn't about to pay that kind of money to have satellite radio in my car. That's just me.
I was flipping through a circular and came across the Skydock. I started reading and was encouraged, especially since you didn't need the auxiliary in jack to operate the unit. I have to admit. I started getting kind of giddy and decided I would give it a try.
I decided to purchase it from an electronics store so that if it didn't work, it would be much easier to return. Also, at the time I purchased it, it was advertised in that store for the same price as it was advertised on Amazon. That has now changed and Amazon's price is about $10 cheaper. Still, even if that was the case today, I still would have purchased it from an electronics store.
I purchased the unit and enlisted the help of an electronics professional (aka my boyfriend :)), who is very adept at installing electronic products. He installed the antenna in less than 10 mins and the wiring isn't even visible to me. He did a superb job in running the wiring so that it wouldn't be disruptive.
After that we plugged it in to my cigarette lighter. That took a little bit of work because while it went into the jack, it required a little bit of twisting and turning to get it to lock. Even though it was in the jack, it wouldn't power the unit. However, after a few attempts we got it to lock in place and the unit turned on. After that, I attached my iPhone to the unit. Now this may be a small thing, but to me, it's one of those "little things" that I am glad they didn't overlook. Like most, I use a case for my iPhone. The Skydock comes with different adjustments to adapt to the width of your iphone [i.e. with or without a case so it fits securely]. This was a relief because it meant that I would not have to constantly remove my case in order to place it in the Skydock. Then we followed the instructions on the display, and it was up and running. One other little caveat. It says that it takes about 30 mins for everything to sync, but it may not take that long. We left the unit syncing because we were out running errands, and when we came out about 40 mins later, it was still syncing. We thought it shouldn't take that long, so we stopped it, re-started it and it started working! Next, it suggested which radio station in which to program my radio. I programmed that station, picked a music genre and voila, it was "music to my ears" Yeah...corny, but I couldn't resist :).
What first impressed me most was there was absolutely NO static. The sound was crystal clear. It wasn't spotty. The signal didn't go in and out. It was unbelievable, and I was very impressed. Now, I will say this, though, you lose a little bit to the music. Meaning, the bass in my car is pretty deep. I put it on it's highest setting and while you can hear the bass in the music, it's not the same as it would be if I were listening to the radio or listening to a CD. But who needs heavy bass anyway ;)? What you want is great sound quality. Right? Well that's what you get.
As I said, it's only been a day since I have been using this unit, but I have to say it is the best $100 I have ever spent. Now, let me address a few of issues that other reviewers had.
First, as I said, I would recommend purchasing the unit from an electronics store, so that if you do have problems, there isn't as much hassle with returning it.
Second, I don't know what happened with the reviewer who said it doesn't work with his iPhone, but it works PERFECTLY with mine. An added bonus. Me and my boyfriend are HUGE sports fans. I have MLB Gameday on my iPhone and I also purchased MLB's Gameday subscription so that I can not only watch games (since I am out of market where my team plays) at home on my computer but also on my iPhone. While the Skydock plays no role in this, since I now have a "holder" for my iPhone, when we're out and about (such as yesterday), we can have the game going and watch it (well he's watching as I am driving ;)) in the car. Obviously, we could listen to it on XM, but if you can watch, why not? Another advantage. You can play your iTunes music through your stereo as well and it sounds great.
Third, another reviewer said they had problems with phone calls. My iPhone worked fine making, as well as receiving, calls. My BF's voice came through my stereo clearly creating a handsfree environment. Also, I asked him to text me and the text displayed on my iPhone screen.
Maybe I am just fortunate, but I have to say that I have had NO problems thus far. Once again I am so happy that this unit is now available. As another reviewer pointed out. For those of us who love iPhone and continue to be amazed by the new features that are made available for this product, it makes me say "thank you again Apple" for not making me feel badly about the amount of money I spent for the phone because the investment continues to pay dividends.
