I used to hook up my portable DVD player to the visor on the passenger side of my car during trips & watch movies while my wife drove, but the DVD player was big & heavy, & I had to haul around a bunch of DVDs. The Archos 605 obviously doesn't have as big a screen, but its 16x9 LCD is big enough to see clearly from a short distance, has outstanding video clarity, and with 80 gb of on-board storage, I can load dozens of movies in either mp4 or VOB format (not to mention mp3, jpg, & PDF files) & not have to haul around DVDs. In addition, with one of the accessories I purchased, I can hook it up to the TV in the motel room. The fact that it has Wi-Fi for surfing the internet doesn't hurt either (although the ability to access the web or view DVD-quality VOB files requires purchasing plug-ins at $20 a pop). Regardless, it's an outstanding unit that I'm sure will be trouble-free since I also own an Archos 405 with a "4x3" screen that hasn't let me down for over 2 years. Forget iPod, Zune, or any of the others. These things can't be beat for what they're able to do for the price.Customer Review: Best PVP-PMP- MP3 on this planet Earth

The first thing I did was fully charge my unit. Then I went to the Archos website, with my unit plugged into the USB port, and downloaded the latest software version for my 605 80 GB unit. Note: the downloads are model specific. My unit was instantly updated and I've experienced no problems whatsoever after nearly 60 days of constant use in the following areas:
surfed numerous websites - the Opera browser is flawless and easy to use
purchased the helmet cam and recorded several outdoor adventure videos which were of better quality than my Sony digital camcorder
linked unit with my PCs windows media player - instant transfer of all files
downloaded videos, movies, pictures, and music without a hitch
hooked my unit up to a JBL On-Tour portable speaker system...awesome full room sound quality

I did my research, lookin' at all alternatives (Ipods, etc.), but my conclusion was that the feature-rich Archos 605 fit the bill best of all: music, photos, (or, anything you might wish to store), and a digital video recorder with which I can record favorite movies and shows, directly from the TV...
The big PLUS is the WIFI with the Opera browser. This put it over the top, I travel extensively and really want to be able to check mail, make reservations, etc., but don't want to schlep a laptop ...
I can do everything with the Archos. Sound and video are remarkable, as is the build quality.

I've used mine for 3 months, and have no issues with the unit. Extremely nice, and the plug-ins all work well. The only issue I have is with Archos themselves. It took a long time and a lot of effort to find out that the only way to buy downloadable plug-ins is to use a credit card tied to a home address. Archos uses the same address for shipping and billing, and will not ship to a PO Box. Never mind that the item is never shipped, but downloaded.The only other issue I have is with the Archoslink software for podcasting. It is not a nice as others I've tried, and for some reasons I get triplicates for some feeds. I have not tried to track the issue down (yet).Still, I would highly recommend the 605 Wifi. Great small size, and works very well with my wireless secured network.Customer Review: Great product

I don't understand the 1 and 2 star ratings on this device. although it has been replaced with the Archos 5 - same device in a sleeker, smaller package - the 605 is a great PMP at this price. I have mine for 2 years now and it works flawlessly. If you want a proprietary system that you are locked in to buy someone's media, then don't by an Archos. If you want an open system that looks like a hard drive to your computer and you can transfer ANY file to, then Archos is for you. In fact if you have DISH Network, Archos provides free software on their site to transfer movies (non-HD) from your DVR to your Archos. Overall, Archos is a great PMP and I highly recommend it for ALL your media requirements.
