Although I had to return the first player because it appeared to have been a returned unit with a smudge near the speaker and an error message when powering-up, the replacement player is fantastic.
I'm glad I took a chance on ordering a replacement instead of just getting my money back because the one I now have has given me no problems and I really enjoy it. I take it everywhere and when I'm listening to the music player, I don't have to worry about it skipping while walking or running, it plays just fine.
Movies are very clear with no eye strain from watching a small screen. The built-in speaker is not good but with headphones, it's just like the movies.
I bought the add-on Opera browser, another $30. Couldn't get wi-fi to work with 26 key (I think) high encryption but works fine now that I am using 16 key with linksys wi-fi router. I love being able to surf the net from any free wi-fi area.
Help, I may be forming an addiction to this gadget!

This is the best portable video player on the market. There are others: the ipod (classic, touch etc), Zune, PSP etc but Archos players generally tend to be better in terms of support for a wider range of video formats, and the Archos 605 is the best device from Archos so far. The interface is improved from previous versions (with the implementation of touch screen), the screen is of good quality and video playback smooth. I use this device to watch TV recorded from my Windows XP Media Centre PC and it works great. Copying video onto the Archos does not require any special software (no iTunes or similar required), and you are less likely to need to transcode your video (a process which can take hours and may result in audio synch problems whatever player you use) as it is more likely to be supported in its original format on this player. If you just want to listen to music, go for an iPod or similar, but if video is what you are after, this is the right device for you.Customer Review: Not an IPOD/Zune Replacement

Being in the navy and having limited storage and range of motion in your living quarters, this device is great.
WIFI works great, transfer of music, video (whatever) is easy as drag and drop.
I don't recommend this player as a music player only. It doesn't remember what song you were on (like the IPOD or Zune) if you turn it off or put it into standby.
Touchscreen is awsome and you can put your favorite picture on the wallpaper just like on your computer screen.
You need to get the "OPERA" Internet stuff seperately. I bought this used on Amazon, so I got it cheaper with that stuff included. Make sure you read the contents of what's included.
The 705 looks nice too. Its bigger, seach YOUTUBE for video reviews on these items, I did my research, I ended up have this and an IPOD, they aren't meant to be the same kind of device.

I am very satisfied with my purchase. I've read other reviews and I know that certain codecs and add ons like the web browser cost extra but, I understand why Archos didn't include them - because they would drive up the cost of the units. I consult for a video technology company and I know that Microsoft and Apple are greedy with their codecs (which is why I convert my videos to Divx and buy products that encode/decode in Divx.) So... I completely understand.
The interface is too cool. The screen is bright and clear. Battery life is awesome. USB charging is convenient. Very well designed. The Opera web browser option is awesome and comparable to a PC web browser (although I wish it used the Mozilla code base instead). It handles YouTube like a pro. It's a good replacement for carrying a laptop on train and plane trips as far as entertainment and web surfing.

This item is sold as a personal media player...or really as just an mp3 and video player.
However, I use it as a car video player for my kid and I couldnt not be happier with it.
I put all sorts of thomas the train, bob the builder, etc video on it and also I put his music and photos on it and it keeps him entertained for hours while driving.
or if we go to the store or a restaurant, it keeps him occupied in a place that's he'd otherwise be very bored.
or when we are traveling, we use it at rest areas, or other wi-fi hotspots to check our email, check weather, traffic, etc.
its a great device.
I use a sansa view for listening to music while working out. the archos 605 is far too bukly for everyday gym use, but for what it does, it is perfect.
