Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 8 GB (2nd Generation--without iPhone OS 3.1 Software) [Previous Model]Customer Review: Freedom to move Summary: 5 Stars
iPod touch is a great device in its own right, and if Apple had never brought out the iPhone, it would probably be the best Apple portable product ever. Its elegant, slim design, its intuitive touch controls, its vast array of applications, its big, rotating screen, all make this an exceedingly desirable product. The functionality of iPod touch over other iPods is greatly enhanced by the access to Wi-Fi wireless internet. It makes it possible, through third party applications like Simplified Media for now, to access all of your music that is sitting on your computer wirelessly as long as you are in a wifi hot spot. This works perfectly for me, since I have access to wireless at work, at home, and in the gym, so about 95% of my life is covered. Still, 8gb of on-board memory is enough for several days worth of songs.
The large screen is a significant step up from all the other iPods. It makes it possible for the first time to watch video content without having to squint too much. The amount of money you'll save on long-term eye care will pay off the price of this device.
There are several improvements of the second generation iPod touch that make it even more user-friendly: special volume control buttons, GPS, and a faster interface. The second generation software (especially version 2.2) has ironed out several of the glitches from the 1st generation. GPS by itself makes this a viable substitute for a stand-alone GPS device.
The advantage of owning an iPod touch over iPhone is that you are not stradled with an expensive long-term phone contract. If you don't use your cell phone all that often, or if you don't need access to always-on ubiquitous internet, then you might as well stick with your old cell phone and buy an iPod touch for your music and entertainment needs.
The only problem that I have with this device is that Apple still hasn't included stereo bluetooth transmission. I have been using stereo bluetooth headset for a couple of years, and it is impossible for me to go back to old tangled headphones. I have bought a special bluetooth adapter from Sony which works great, but it would be really nice if Apple has thought of this detail and included it in the second generation of iPod touch. Other than that, I would highly recommend this device to anyone.
Customer Review: This is why you should never buy the first generation of a gadget Summary: 5 Stars
The iPod Touch 2nd gen is great! And it is so much better than the first generation. I'm so glad I waited to buy this one!
Like everyone else, I was excited about the iPhone. But I am not an AT&T customer, and had no desire to switch. I also love my BlackBerry and am not too keen on a no-button phone. But the potentials of wifi and touchscreen with an accelerometer are amazing! When they came out with the iPod Touch, I was so excited! I've been buying iPods since 2003 and I've been dreaming of the day when my iPod is more like iTunes in my pocket.
That's why I was very disappointed when I went to the Apple store to check out the 1st generation iPod Touch. It was basically an iPod with a bigger screen. There was no interactivity. You couldn't delete, you couldn't make playlists, you couldn't edit your address book or calendar.
The second generation iPod is so much better. A big part of it was the software upgrade. The app store brings functionality that Apple never would have dreamed up on their own. But Apple also added a (tiny) external speaker which makes quick sharing even quicker and simpler, since you don't have to mess with earbuds. Another improvement over the previous model is an external volume switch, which is very handy because it allows you to adjust the volume without having to look at the device first, but adjust just by touch (what a concept!).
The UI still has some improvements that I would like to see made. The touch gestures take a little time to learn. I would like to see more capability with making playlists. I also don't like how the additional information that is displayed on tracks switched from the Comments field to the Lyrics field - and Apple doesn't let you customize things like that - which is very annoying.
When I first bought this iPod, I thought I would just use it to download apps and as a "fun" gadget. After all, it's only 8GB and I LOVE my 80GB iPod video, which I used every day until I bought the Touch. But now that I've had the Touch, I barely look at my old iPod! I use the Touch every day and it's really a joy to be able to see most of my tags. I can't wait to see how the software gets improved further!
Customer Review: Best Purchase I Have Ever Made in my Life Summary: 5 Stars
Woa. The ipod touch is probably the best ipod/mp3 player on the market. Not only can you listen to music, you can also play fun games, watch videos, store pictures, and, with an internet connection, you can use the web and go on youtube. Basically, it is the iphone, without a phone and a slightly thinner apperance. This is a music listeners dream. It comes in 8gigs, 16gigs, and 32gigs. If you want all of your favorite songs, some pictures, and your favorite tv episodes and movies, like me, than I reccomend the 8gig. If you want the extra space for music and movies, (movies can take up to 2 gigs!) then I reccomend the 16gig. If you are a music god or godess, and have alot of videos and pictures to store, then I reccomend the 32gig. But no matter how many gigs you have, you will still have fun with your ipod touch. Music and videos are EXTREMELY clear. The video's image is really bright and clear, and the sound is phenomenal. Once I was watching a video on youtube that took place outside, and I could actually hear the wind blowing! Movies and TV shows are clear and play with ease. With pictures, you can actually see every little detail. There are so many types of applications for your ipod. Lifestyle, Games, and Social Networking, just to name a few. Their price ranges from free to ten dollars, and they don't take up alot of space.
TROUBLESHOOTING
There might be a few problems with yor ipod. Don't worry, alot of them could easily be taken care of. First off, the typing. Alot of times your finger will tap the wrong letter by mistake. A trick is, that if you SEE that you have made a mistake, do not release your finger. Instead, drag your finger to the correct letter. Another problem I have experienced is that my ipod would not hook up to my internet connection. If this happens to you, simply go to settings on the home screen, and tap reset. Then your internet connection should work. Also, on sometimes your ipod will freeze if you are in the middle of an application. This has not happenened to me, but according to apple, hold down the lock button at the top for ten seconds.
Customer Review: I adore it! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had many handheld game / music units over the years, but I really love the iPod Touch. Yes it only holds 8 gig of music - but its gaming abilities far more than make up for that!
First, the MP3 side. We already own 60 gig iPods so they hold "all our music". I admit it is very nice knowing your entire library is there with you, including all your audiobooks, so that no matter what you want to show to someone or listen to, it's all there. Still, with 8 gig in this unit you get at least a fair portion of your library available. So you can have a few stories to listen to, a bunch of your favorite songs and then a collection of photos as well to show off.
What makes this great is that songs are just ONE part of what this unit does. It is a FANTASTIC gaming system. You can go online very easily with its built-in wireless and download literally thousands of games. Most are free! Some are a tiny cost - maybe $2 or $3. The games are quite addictive and fun. I can name several off the top of my head that I play for hours. What makes them great is that the iTouch has a built in motion sensor. So you can tilt, twist, and spin your way through the games. Plus the screen is (obviously) touch sensitive! There are lots of games that you play through subtle touches. You can even play drums and keyboards!
There are many mail hook-ins so that you can get your mail and keep in touch with friends and family on the go. They have access to Google maps so that you can figure out where you're going. There are calculators. Notepads. Contact lists. You can have your entire world organized and there.
I've been playing with this for many months now and really don't have any complaints about it. I wish it'd give you more warning when it was running low on battery without interrupting what you were doing. The connector pins are slightly different from other units, but all my chargers work fine with it and I haven't run into anything I wanted to use with my iPod Touch that I could not use.
Highly recommended!
Customer Review: Leaps and Bounds Ahead of the Competition Summary: 5 Stars
I've had my iPod for about one month now and it continues to show me just how much of a great buy it is. My old mp3 player was a Creative Zen Microphoto, a decent mp3 player but nothing special. I've always wanted an ipod but they weren't a very good value. That was until the 2nd Generation 8GB iPod Touch. At $215 (which may not seem like such a small sum) you get WAY more than the competition offers. First of all, if you have a Wi-Fi network at home I can almost guarantee you will never be stuck bored with it. Its many capabilities include the ability to surf the web (at quite reasonable speeds) with Safari (the default web browser), the huge App Store whose name may suggest that everything costs money actually offers plenty of free games and applications. Also, you can access iTunes straight from the Touch and download songs and podcasts (some of which are videos). Some of them are even free. Also, if you like YouTube you can watch its videos on the iPod if you have a Wi-Fi connection. As for the device itself, be warned that it is quite fragile since it has a large (I believe 3.5 inch) touch screen stretching across the front of it, so you should probably get a protective case for it as soon as possible. Also, just so you know the built-in speaker is of very poor qualilty (like that of a cellphone, well maybe a little better than that) so I wouldn't recommend relying on it as your primary speaker. In addition, the headphones, as stylish as they are sound quite tinny and are not in-ear headphones which may prove to make them very uncomfortable. To solve this problem, I bought a pair of Sony mdr-ex36's at a Best Buy for $30 (I recommend them). As for a case (or skin) I bought the Speck Toughskin for about $18 (on Amazon). By the way, the iPod doesn't come with an AC Wall Charger so I bought the Griffin Powerduo from Amazon for about $20 (this includes a wall AND car charger adapter). I don't have a dock for it yet, but the Logitech Pure-Fi Anytime seems to be a pretty good choice at $80 on Amazon.
