After a month spent using the iPod touch, it's far and away superior to any iPod I've owned (two 30 GB 2nd gen iPods and a 4 GB mini).
In every way this iPod excels, the screen is bright, colors are crisp, and the resolution is such that small type on web pages displayed in portrait view is clearly legible. The touchscreen is accurate and sensitive (I've got big fingers, yet the touch rarely makes the wrong selection). The touch charges quickly and a charge lasts as long as the specs say it should (36 hours audio, 6 hours video). My only complaint is that the touch only supports USB cables so my old FireWire accessories no longer worked, but that's to be expected when you buy the bleeding edge in technology.
As a gaming platform, the iPod isn't bad, the accelerometers pick up the slightest change in position so games like Labyrinth, where you have to maneuver a ball bearing through a wooden maze, play well. Buying apps from the iTunes store has been easy and, if you read the reviews on iLounge before buying, you're unlikely to buy a dud.
Syncing is surprisingly quick (a relief after finding out it didn't support FireWire!). The WiFi has worked as expected. I use it at work and it hasn't dropped a connection yet.
Videos play well, I recommend MacTheRipper for ripping DVDs you own so they can be played on the iPod. After ripping, you'll need HandBrake or VisualHub to conver the ripped DVDs to a format the iPod will run. Depending on your Mac, it takes about a minute to convert each minute of program to MPEG 4 format.
For protecting the iPod's beautiful-but-fragile chrome finish, I highly recommend the DLO Jam Jacket (http://www.dlo.com/Products/JJcord_touch2g_Prod.tpl?command=showpage&cart=), it's relatively inexpensive, provides excellent protection, and the earbud cord caddy on the back keeps the buds from getting tangled. It's not currently available on Amazon, but I found one at Best Buy. Note that you should clean the iPod touch's screen thoroughly (I used a little Windex sprayed on a cloth), then use a spray can of air FELLOWES 99790 Air Duster to get the dust off before putting the surface shield screen protector in place. Trust me on this, any speck of dust will cause the shield to bubble, and once it's dusty, you can't clean it.

I am just about 100% happy with this amazing little device. I'd been using an iPod for 3 or 4 years (the 1st video version) and had enjoyed it. I wasn't sure I really needed the upgrade, but after some deliberation I picked one of these up. My first impression was that it sounded different. The EQ settings are VERY different from the iPod I'd been using. "R&B" had become my default setting on the older unit. That setting gave considerable boost to the highs and lows; it just made the sound "bigger". The sound initially seemed "smaller" on the Touch. I finally decided that it sounded better with the EQ set to "off", although I've toyed with the bass boost setting here and there. My ears have grown accustomed to the Touch, and after a few weeks it sounds quite good. BTW, I'm using high end ear buds (in-the-ear type). Of course "listening" is just one good thing about the Touch. I've had a blast putting my own images in iTunes to replace album covers I dislike, or just to add some wacky variety. WiFi works great with my Airport setup at home. I also tested it in the waiting room at a car dealership and it picked right up on the WiFi there. Some of the apps are terrific. I downloaded a few free games that I play often. In addition, I've loaded a few of my favorite films onto the Touch. It's fun to know that I'm carrying those around in my pocket. I've only had a couple of glitches with the device. I've had to reboot it maybe three times. Not a huge deal. Once it just stopped playing a song for some reason. Also, "cover flow" can shut down if you get carried away with flicking through it too fast. These have been very minor issues so far. The only other "problem" I can recall is that you can easily think you've shut it down, when it's actually still playing music (running the battery down). Actually I also did that a few times with the iPod classic, so I just need to pay more attention. I got a nice silicon jacket for the Touch. I felt the need for a bit more bulk and protection and that fit the bill just fine. All in all, I am VERY happy with the iPod Touch. Oh, I forgot to mention one more caveat. This is for the ipod touch Apple iPod touch 32 GB (2nd Generation), and for the yearly "update".
First of all the Pro's of the Apple iPod touch 2G vs the 1G.
2G, volume control, thinner, speakers, etc.
Cons:
Headphone button next to the ipod to US.
Overall, the iPod touch is fantastic. It has all of the apps and things you can need, "It's more of a pocket PDA than an MP3 Player." I now see this.
This is a great buy for people without any iPod, and highly recommended, or, if you have a very old ipod, this is what you should get.
But, be warned, this is WAY more advanced than a regular mp3 player. If you are just going to listen to music, get a shuffle, or a nano. This is MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more than that.
If you have an older version of iPod touch,
I do NOT recommend this. I have heard rumors of an ipod 3G/ bluetooth/ 64GB (or something like that) to come out in a few months. I do not know if it's going to be that much different, or if it will be much better, or if it will just be a memory increase. What I do think is that once that comes out, the prices will be:
8GB Touch, $199 (or dropped)
16GB Touch, $229-$249
32GB Touch $299-$349
64GB Touch $399-$499
This is my GUESS. I do not know if this is true, or just a rumor.
All in All, this new iPod touch is better than the first generation, but not worth buying it if you have the 1G.

Ipod Classic:
I don't think this changed at all for good. The 160GB Classic was dropped... and the 80GB became a 120GB, for the same price. Yes, that is good, but for the MAX memory that people want, this was a bad choice.
Ipod Nano:
HUGE Upgrade.
Accelerometer, new look, new everything really, this was good and bad. I actually prefer the 2nd generation look, although this 3G nano is pretty cool.

Yes, it's Apple's new iPod Touch 2.0, dubbed "the funnest iPod ever" by Steve Jobs.
It has a new outer design - sleeker than the first generation iPod Touch, now with a shiny stainless steel design. There are also volume control buttons on the side - convenient when you want to quickly change the volume of a song without having to activate the interface. It also has a built-in speaker - convenient for when you want to set a wake-up alarm, but not too useful when you want to listen to music or watch a movie in a crowded subway - you'll still want your earphones in that case.
It also has built-in Nike+ sensor software - you just need to add the shoe sensor and you can save your running workouts directly to your iPod Touch. Also, there is longer battery life - up to 36 hours of audio or 6 hours of video, plus the built-in accelerometer, which adds new dimensions to user interface possibilities.
Speaking of which, perhaps the best feature of the new iPod is the AppStore. Apple opened up their development environment to allow anyone to create games, utilities, reference applications, entertainment packages, and other finance, sports, social networking, productivity, weather, travel, photography, news, navigation, music, lifestyle, healthcare and fitness, education, business, and book applications, and offer them for free and for sale through their App Store. Downloading and installing new software packages is trivial, and the number of useful software packages will only increase going forward.
And there's even a built-in stock tracker, in case you would like to keep track of how poorly your stocks are doing.
The built-in Safari browser renders web pages in a very readable format, and the ability to zoom in at-will with the Touch's unique interface makes reading and surfing very enjoyable on such a small device.
But one of the main reasons I got one was because I travel a lot, and like to listen to audio books while on the road. Especially if you have an audible.com account, the iPod is perfect for this.

I have had the IPT for a few months and wanted road test this product before I reviewed it. This is my first ipod, though I have another small/featureless mp3 player for running. I am not a big fan of Apple products in general - but this is another story. The IPT is amazing. I am surprised at how much I use it. I don't have a car adapter, so my use is typically not when I'm driving. I use it 75% of the time for music and 25% for the other applications. I would recommend looking at the app reviews before adding them on your IPT (I have found the apps with negative reviews really are not worth adding). I have not figured out how to delete apps, I'm sure it's possible, but I haven't gotten 'round to researching it!
Two things I would love to see added: bluetooth -it's just handy- (edited later: someone commented that blue tooth should be available this summer as a software upgrade - so keep that in mind) and a built in camera (like the iphones offer). This brings me to another point, I debated about an ipod vs iphone. I simply did not find the iphone as comfortable to talk with as my current cell phone - that's just me- though I think all of the capabilities of the iphone are amazing.
One funny problem that I have -- I am now so used to the touch screen- that my brain thinks everything ought to be a touch screen - like my Kindle, phone and sometimes I go to touch my computer screen for IPT style capabilities. Creature of habit!
I got the 32gig version because it was not that much more than the 16gig, and I had no idea how much room the apps or movies would take up. (as it turns out, I have not downloaded any movies- may do so for future travel, though). If you plan to keep your IPT for a long time (I don't upgrade with every new version), I would suggest the 32gig -- if you upgrade your tech with each new revision, the 16gig would most likely be fine.
