Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 16 GB (2nd Generation) [Previous Model]Customer Review: Quickly becomes indispensable Summary: 5 Stars
Got the iPod Touch 2G a couple months back, and it has quickly become more important than the PC in my daily routine.
With the large number of iPhone-optimized web sites, this little device has become my primary web browser. News is actually easier to read on this than on a laptop or desktop - you can take it anywhere, and the battery lasts all day. Now there really is no reason to buy a newspaper.
Mail is excellent with the built-in application: just enter your smtp and pop server, and you'll use this to read all your mail. Generating mail isn't quite as easy because the keyboard simply isn't that convenient to use yet, but quickie responses aren't a problem.
Gotta love the weather app, and Google maps with the built-in location finder is brilliant too (they use wifi routers around you to approximate your location without the GPS.)
The Youtube app actually looks better on this than on a big screen (because of their typical resolution.)
The thousands of free and $1 apps available on the App store are amazing and mind-boggling. Isn't application availability why the Windows PC took off? All those kids who've become millionaires off some app they sweated on for a week, this thing has certainly enabled some opportunity in a tough economy. I've downloaded numerous apps and games, and to be honest, it's worrisome that the device is lost easily, with all the data on it. Thank god for iTunes backup (and password protection!)
Videos and photos are superb on the bright high-resolution screen.
Oh yeah, the music. That's nice too. I got the 16G to make sure I had enough room for my best music plus everything I wanted on there, and I'm glad of it. Coverflow is an amazing interface.. just when you thought the click wheel was the best thing since sliced bread, Apple comes up with something even better.
All in all, this powerful little handheld computer is more than worth its price. Be prepared to spend a fair amount of your spare time on it.
Customer Review: What an upgrade... Summary: 5 Stars
...from my old Apple 30 GB iPod AAC/MP3 Video Player Black (5.5 Generation)! I've had the 16GB Touch for about a week now and although it's only half the space of my old iPod, I've still only been able to fill up about 7GB total. About 6GB of that is music which is approximately 2.8 days worth of music. Enough music for my needs with the ability to add more if wanted. The remaining space is used for about 1500 pics (1GB) and 30 (YES 30! I COUNTED!!) apps/games. The apps/games itself are very small in size so don't worry about using up too much space with them.
The audio output seems to be better on the Touch than my old ipod Video. Browsing through albums via cover flow is a neat feature that makes you want to organize all your music and album covers. The games look amazing and the use of the accelerometer is like nothing I've experienced before. There also seems to be a billion apps/games in the App Store with a lot of them being FREE. Some apps that I've downloaded include beat makers, mini pianos, scratch dj, calorie counter, 5800+ mixed drinks recipes, urbanspoon which helps you find places to eat by shaking the Touch, Google Earth, MySpace, Facebook, and Pandora which is similar to XM radio with all kinds of FREE music. All those apps I just mentioned were FREE!
This 2G iPod Touch is a TRUE GEM; it's very slim, shiny, and has a solid feel to it. Everyone compliments how skinny it is, about 1/3 skinnier than the 3g iPhone. With that said, PROTECT IT! I'm currently using the iLounge recommended Digital Lifestyle Outfitters SoftShell for iPod touch 2G which comes with a screen cover too.
There is nothing out there like the iPod Touch. Some say it's a better value than Sony's PSP even. Once you own this, consider yourself NEVER BORED AGAIN.
Customer Review: Pricey but easily worth the cost of admission Summary: 5 Stars
I won't go over every single feature on this product, as you probably well know them all by now. But I will, however, tell you what's so great about it in a nutshell.
The touch interface is superb. While it may seem overly fancy, the touch feature (which is surprisingly accurate) combined with the accelerometer (responds to being tilted and flipped) make for the simple control yet deep possibilities for software. I can't say enough about this.
This iPod is not really an iPod - it's a pocket computer. If you have a Mac, this thing is your new PDA. It syncs with Mail, iCal, iTunes, iPhoto, and more. I would imagine any updates to Mac software will have equivalent updates reflected in iTouch and iPhone. And for any software deficiencies it may have? Well, it's just software. It will continue to be tweaked and perfected.
As an iPod only, it is superb, but I'd say if you'll only use it for audio go with a cheaper model. CNET comments that the audio is just alright, but I pride myself on my discerning ear and I think the sound produced by the iPod is rich and and expressive.
With the app store, I find myself downloading a lot of free content. I get NYTimes, Bloomberg, and a local NPR station streaming to iTouch over WiFi all completely FREE OF CHARGE. If you can swing it, some of the programs that require purchase are great and the games are super fun (but they kill your battery!).
Overall, this is the coolest gadget I've ever owned. I had been considering the iPhone, but ultimately decided the similar feature set (iPhone only adds phone, camera, and bluetooth functionality) was not worth the additional $30/month to my cell phone bill. So, I decided to just carry two devices - a cell phone and my iPod. As with all Apple products, it works as advertised, has an intuitive interface, and is just plain fun. If you're on the fence about this item, rest assured, it's probably the best tech purchase you'll ever make.
Customer Review: A game changer Summary: 5 Stars
It's so much more than my last iPod, a 30GB fifth generation version.
The Apps and Wifi are what make this a winner. If I needed a phone I would strongly consider the iPhone, but I love having a little device that can access the net when out and about, assuming you have wifi available.
I haven't really put the battery life to the test, but I did get the Richard Solo batter pack for plane rides and other times I may need extra juice.
I've had to reset the unit once and re-synch it when some apps would quit immediately upon being launched. That solved the problem.
I've never been a gamer, but I've downloaded a few (crazy penguin catapult and a maze game) and find they will come in handy when I need to kill a few minutes when stuck in a waiting room, for example.
I have played around with Fring and actually made phone calls from my iPod Touch. It worked for a while but something must be wrong with Fring as new calls are not going through. Another service allows you to assign a number to the Touch. Search YouTube for how-to's. You need a microphone. Target (in-store only) sells a Microphone adapter for the touch that is only $10. It's made by Phillip's. This is a good microphone to make audio recordings on the unit.
The ability to read and respond to email, surf the web, get RSS feeds, weather and so on, really open a new world.
I didn't bother getting an Invisible Shield cover for this unit. I used that product on the 5G iPod and my cameras, but after watching YouTube videos of people torturing their iPod Touches trying to scratch them I decided to go naked. The back is scratched up, but who cares?
The unit is so small and slick that I worried about it slipping off my leg or couch when seated. To give it more grip I added two vertical strips of cloth tape, hoping to give the unit some grab and make it less slick.
So far I have to say this is money well spent.
Customer Review: I'm A Little Touchy On The Subject... Summary: 5 Stars
I bought myself a 16 GB iPod Touch a couple months ago, and I gotta say I couldn't be happier.
Among the numerous pluses for this beautiful product are:
-The sleek design, which despite what it may seem, makes it extremely portable and slips right into your pocket.
-The extremely responsive touch screen. Great technology with this. Its great fun just scrolling through your songs because of the excellently natural feel of this feature.
-The beautiful full color display makes photos and movies nice to look at.
-The layout is excellent. Everything you need is right at your fingertips when you need it. Very easy to use.
-Some really great apps. There are hours to be spent fooling around with some really fun applications, many of which are free.
-The capacity is more then enough for me. I dumped over a thousand songs on, which is all my music, a couple movies, and several apps and I still have 4 GBs of space left.
-There are several very helpful features included on the iPod, including a calender, a note pad, an alarm/stopwatch/timer, a scientific calculator, and some other stuff.
-The iPod actually has an internal speaker, which means you can play your music without any headphones. The quality isn't great, and its kinda quiet, but considering this is something most players don't have at all, its a plus!
-...and much more!
A couple things that I've noticed that aren't so good:
-The battery life is a little short. This shouldn't be a problem if you stay on top of charging it, but it could use to be a little longer.
-The shiny back of the iPod shows scratches really easily. I would suggest buying a cover or something.
Despite these flaws, the pluses definitely out-weigh the minuses. If your looking for a reliable, fun, and nice looking player for your music, movies, or other media, I highly recommend the iPod Touch.
