Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 16 GB (1st Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: More useful than a Swiss Army Knife
Summary: 5 Stars

I have owned the iPod touch since October 07. I can honestly say that the touch is more useful than when it was initially purchased. The software upgrade (now available on all new touch) took this item from good to great.

First of all it is an iPod... not an iPhone, so if you want an iPhone go ahead and get one... Don't bash this product because that is not what the touch is trying to be. The iTunes interface is the same as in the past, it works great, and the music player has great sound. The "cover flow" mode of looking through your CD's is very cool. I must say I enjoy being able to look at the covers of all my CD's.

The calendar is nice and works well as a PDA now that the software upgrades have made it possible to edit the calendar. The calendar syncs well with iCal if you use that program on your computer. I subscribed to the US holiday calendar so now the US holidays are in my calendar (including daylight savings) that helps keep me organized.

The contacts feature allows you to input names, phone numbers, and addresses. You can tag the contacts with pictures of the contact if you chose. When you have WiFi access and you touch the contact's address the iPod touch will pull up a map Google map and show you where the address is on a map.

The touch has a photo album that you can move your pictures from computer to touch. The pictures look really clear. The photos will show in a slide show, or you can go to one specific picture.

The touch will detect WiFi networks well. If you need to put in a special password to get on your home network you only have to put the code in once. The touch remembers that password when you get close to that network. The WiFi does cause the battery to drain faster so I find that if I am not going to be using the WiFi it is best to turn that feature off.

The iPod touch is a great option for a person in the market for a music player and a PDA. I think it is great that I get most of the features of the iPhone without the monthly bill. A software developer kit was released this spring so the future should be exciting for this product. I have the 16 GB version.. I am OK with that. I think that as soon as the new applications start coming out I will be pinched for space. At this time I have 1500 songs, 8 videos, 23 pictures and a decent sized address book... I still have 8GB available for new things.

I am happy with the iPod touch... thats just my 2¢

Customer Review: Toucha Toucha Toucha Touch Me!
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I said that hasn't already been said? The IPOD TOUCH is a device from the future. It's the tricorder I wanted as a child. It's sexy, sleek, and amazing. Do I sound like a gadget fangirl? Well, not usually, but when my husband bought a TOUCH, I very quickly became hooked. More than that, the whole family suddenly had to have it. I was reminded of the classic movie The Gods Must Be Crazy when the Coke bottle landed in the middle of the tribe and soon no one could live without it. Of course, we weren't that bad, really, but the phrase, "Where's the Touch" became quite common. The exception was the 3-year-old. She'd asked, "Where's Daddy's special little TV?" Now at age 4, she's also playing - and winning - several of the games. And that's part of the beauty of the design of the TOUCH. It's clean. Everyone understands the basic rules of how the apps work. Everyone can turn it on, flick through the screens, and find they app they want. The device is small enough to take everywhere but the screen is large enough to watch movies on. It is truly a paradigm-shifting design.

The TOUCH and the iPhone are fraternal twins. While springing from the same nucleus, they are different. The TOUCH is slimmer, has no phone, no GPS, and no speaker. For my tastes, that's just fine, although a speaker would be nice. We have the 16GB version which is plenty for a score of movies/TV shows, plus some music, audiobooks, and a slew of apps. I actually like that it is not also my phone, but I wouldn't give it away if it were! I'm just leery of all-in-one products. Battery life is descent, but we always have a charger close at hand. One nice thing is that you can turn the screen off while listening to music or an audiobook. You can even play games while listening to your own music. And of course, you have Apple's App store full of every type of program imaginable.

We've had our TOUCH for more than 2 years, and we still love it. It goes everywhere with us and truly has us spoiled. More on that in my review of the Samsung Omnia.

Customer Review: Excellent: Much better than getting an iPhone
Summary: 5 Stars

This is better than the iPhone. First of all, it is thinner and more solid feeling in the hand than the iPhone. Second, it has all the features of the iPhone except the camera and PDA features. Both of those problems are solved by getting a dedicated phone that #1) probably has a better camera (with flash) and #2) has better customization options as well as better phone functionality. Call me old fashioned, but the virtual number keypad isn't my cup of tea. The solution for the PDA features is pretty obvious; a laptop. Obvious, isn't it? Who doesn't carry a laptop to work these days? Every young professional who is well-connected has the same setup. I work in New York City and pretty much all my co-workers and I have a solid featured phone with decent camera (I have a Nokia N82 - 5.0MP camera with xenon flash), an ultramobile laptop, and an iPod of some type. Well, since the main criticisms of the iPod touch - mainly that it is a lame-duck version of the iPhone (which is complete garbage) have been addressed, the only fact that remains is that it is by far the most attractive and feature packed media player on the market. Perfect for listening to music and entertaining oneself on subway or in flights.

Are people getting so lazy nowadays that they can't carry around a dedicated media player and a phone? Even if that phone happens to feature far superior phone features and camera? I have some friends who have gotten the iPhone and those who do all envy my current configuration. The only reason why I'd recommend someone to get the iPhone over the iPod touch is if they are on a pretty thin budget and need a PDA because they can't afford an ultramobile laptop like an IBM or XPS M1330 and a decent phone with a nice camera. Just my 5 cents. I absolutely love this iPod touch and it fills my needs exactly what I purchased it for; to entertain me during extended down times ie. flights, train, and so on.

Customer Review: Very Nice Media Player
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had this for a few months now, and truly think it is the best media player that I have owned in many respects. I was happy with is before the "January Software Update", but even more so after installing it on the day of release. The addition of the weather, notes, mail, & stocks apps make this indispensable. Since I run a consulting company, and do work with many companies, this allows me to access the separate email accounts easily in a single interface (many clients require communication on their own email servers).

On the basic ipod side, I've been pretty impressed with the sound quality and the ease of search and navigation. I have had little problem doing it with one hand or two. The multitouch motions require either setting it on a flat surface, or holing in the other hand, so the one handed options there are a bit limited. Once you get used to using the special motions, though... it is very easy and intuitive.

Since I am not a heavy user, I only have to charge the iPod about every other day or so. The key to keeping the battery life up, is to mute the display when you are not using it. This is easily done by pressing the button on the top once, and pressing it again to restore when you need to change songs. You can also use the front button to bring up the music controls when the unit is locked.

Basically, if you watch the introduction video on the apple website, you get a pretty good feel of how to use it. The only other recommendation I would make, is to add a protective case and a screen protector to keep it looking like new. I got a complete package on Amazon called, "5 in 1 Apple iPod Touch 8GB, 16GB Silicone Case Package Includes Home Travel Charger, Car Charger, Retractable USB Cable, Armband, and Screen Protector" from a partner reseller. Very nice, but that's another review...
