Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod touch 16 GB (1st Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: IPOD touch is like a pda Summary: 5 Stars
I picked out the IPOD Touch 16g because of the reviews. It was just what I have been looking for to replace my PDA. I have use Palm and Dell PDAs in the past. This is much easier to navigate than either product. It is a fraction of the size and does everything I need it to and more as I gain experience with it. I didn't get the one with the phone. I just didn't need that product.
It has an easy to navigate calender with a list feature. Using this I can quickly see all upcoming appointments. It has an audible alarm.
Putting in contacts and associating birthdays is easy too. Then it associates the information with your calender. I can also use notes in the contact section to put in peoples clothes sizes or kids names or whatever I want.
To synchronize or charge I just plug it into my computer and I don't have to give it any commands. I put books on tape, bible on CD, prayers, and all kinds of music on it. It sorts them easily so I can find any thing I need with a quick touch even with the 20 years worth of CDs I have collected. They are easy to delete too.
It has a simple calculator which is handy. I never need graphing functions at work, just basic functions. It has all I need.
There is a note feature. I can keep lists on it. I use it to keep track of movie and book recommendations people give me. I use it for my gift list for Christmas. I use it to carry measurements of my windows and rooms in case I find furniture or curtains I don't have to wait to measure to see if they will fit. I also keep notes with all my family vaccinations and health information. It is really handy not having a bunch of slips of paper to thumb through and loose.
It surfs the internet faster than my own desk top, but the font is small and the trick of super-sizing it took me about a week to learn. I have bookmarked important sites and you tube videos I have wanted to share. When I am done, it is easy to delete any book marks. Typing comments on blogs or other information took me a week to learn. The keyboard requires a certain touch. A little practice and there is nothing to it. I have wide fingers and have found the right way to hold it to type without errors. No stylus is used. I use it everyday to check my AOL email account.
The battery runs down quickly when using the internet. If I want it to last a whole shift at work, I have to turn off the wifi connection. It takes 3 quick clicks to do that. No big deal.
Several nurses I work with have taken a tour of my IPOD and are getting their own. My only regret is not getting more memory. I have never needed more with my other PDA, but this does so much more and is more fun. I want to use it every day. This is a wonderful product for the older adult who may have a hard time learning how to use new technology. And it is a product my children wish they could have.
I am looking forward to playing games on it in the future.
Customer Review: Incredible, useful toy, but download the $10 update to get it all! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this item refurbished, from Apple's website. It came in an Apple box with all the accessories listed with the new one, and a 1yr warranty. It looks brand new; not a scratch, and sync'd with my computer flawlessly, downloading music, videos, contacts, calendar (from Outlook), and my favorites (from Explorer). Many FREE applications are available from iTunes, as well as other free media, but I quickly found out that to get these, you'd better spend the extra $10 to download the 2.0 version of the software if you don't already have it.
Things that might help you get started:
1. Download and install the latest version of iTunes on your computer before you hook-up your iTouch.
2. Download the user's guide from Apple.com for the current iTouch (1st or 2nd generation). Check this out before you get going, as the iTouch manual that it came with doesn't provide much information.
3. Depending upon the battery life it shipped with, you may have to spend up to three hours charging the iTouch with the provided usb cable before you use it.
4. When you have opened up iTunes on your computer, you will need an iTunes account to get the FREE applications. A credit card number is needed to setup the account. Be careful that you don't download applications that are not free, or your credit card will be charged.
5. Once you select applications they will be in que to upload to your iTouch. Unplug your iTouch from the usb and then re-plug it in to get the iTunes software to upload your applications for your use.
6. The button on the front of the iTouch (a square icon...the only button on the front) is how you get to your 'homepage'.
7. For a wireless network that is securted (ie: your home network) you will need the security key to put in so the network can recognize the device. Have that handy as you setup your iTouch.
8. This 16GB size seems like the right choice considering price and availablity of space. I put 2800 photos and 800 songs on it and there is still tons of room.
9. Invest in a case for it. While solidly made, with a glass screen and a metal back, it needs something to protect it in a purse or briefcase.
I found this device to be so much more than the typical MP3 player or a PDA. I love the email function (just find a wi-fi spot first) and the internet capabilities. The pages for the internet load and look very small, but you can easily magnify them and scroll pages.
I do think a nice addition for future iTouch models would be a camera, but since there is so much you can do with it once you load free applications on it, I can't complain! I can see why people would buy an iPhone after getting this, but for those of us who have a phone...this is one heck of a fun additon to the electronics arsonal we carry around each day. Fun, fun, fun!!!
Customer Review: My Apple iPod Summary: 5 Stars
Strengths: Solid construction, excellent design, click wheel a big improvement over the past touch-sensitive buttons, sound quality definitely good, small and slim.
Weaknesses: No FM radio, no built-in microphone for recording (have to purchase it separately, must pay $99 for new battery from Apple when old one loses its charge, only supports iTunes; NO WMA MUSIC! The COST $300+ (Ouch!!)
Summary:
When looking for an Mp3 player, I researched all the possible models to purchase. Since most of my Mp3's are CD based, not from an online store, I had no problem with gettting a WMA-only or iTunes-only player. After reading all the reviews possible, I came to the conclusion to purchase the #1 Mp3 player of all: ipod. While searching for the best deal out there my friend told me how he won one by refferring 5 friends for one of those online trials. While intrested I was like thanks but no thanks, well that was until he showed me his and the site showing it was from. Then I figured I'll give it a try since I knew well over 5 people I could talk into doing it. Most offers were a buck or free for a month anyway. Well anyway check it out for yourself because I'm a living testimony http://www.amazon.com. When I got it, it came in very nice packaging: a cube-shaped box, NOT one of those plastic packaging which requires a jackhammer to open. Upon opening the box, I quickly transferred the ipod into a silicone case that I bought at Best Buy. I highly recommend buying a case in which you can still have access to the screen and controls without taking out the ipod, because the silver back is very prone for fingerprints and scratches. After popping the ipod into the case, I plugged it into the wall charger for its initial charge. Apple has come up with the neatest idea: simply use the same firewire cable that you use to hook ipod to your computer and plug that into the small block that goes into your wall outlet. It is really neat. (In fact, you don't need the wall charger at all to charge ipod. It charges when you plug it into your computer too.) Upon charging, I plugged it into my pc. iTunes recognized it immediately and set about to move my music collection over to it. Once done, I plugged in my Sony earphones (I've yet to touch the included Apple ones) and turned on the device. VOILA! I couldn't believe the music quality. It was unbelievable. I tinkered with the equalizer settings and found that the "Hip Hop" setting works best for me, as it brings out the bass sound nicely. I really didn't want to go to bed that night, since I was having so much fun with the ipod.
My Bottom Line: After using ipod, now I know why it is so immensely popular. You will definitely not regret getting those 5 friends to sign up for those trial offers, I know I don't.
Customer Review: Amazing! Summary: 5 Stars
I purchased this model late Tuesday night and was able to get a $10 discount and free super saver shipping. I knew that the super saver shipping would delay me having the Ipod in my hand but Amazon has been terrific when it comes to shipping. Sure enough, the expected arrival date was between July 28th-August 1st. I recieved it today. Not bad with free shipping and it ended up arriving 3 full days after I ordered it. Much to my amazement also, when I ordered my ipod touch, the next day the price dropped.
This is an amazing piece of harware. The picture is outstanding, the sounds are amazing, and the new programs on it are something special. I was aware that version 2.0 came out and I wasn't expecting my ipod touch to have it. It would depend on when Apple ships out the Ipod touch with the new software upgrade. Many people were complaining that they didn't get the software upgrade they were expecting- 2.0. Please be aware that it all depends on what the supplier has. In Amazon's case, they probably still have the 1.1's. I haven't seen any reviewer say that they just bought their Ipod touch and it has version 2.0. If you went to Apple's website, possibly you would be able to buy an Ipod touch with the new software upgrade but I'm betting that the price will be somewhat higher. Amazon had the lowest price and my Ipod works like a charm.
Out of the box, it was easy to set up. Itunes was a little slow to install but I think that it's just my anti-virus software that is holding things up. Very annoying! Setting up an itunes account was easy and synchonizing my ipod was a sinch. The touch screen is very sleek and responds gently to your touch. Going through all the programs that are pre-loaded is easy. As I said before, the picture quality is amazing. Wi-Fi is a very nice inclusion and the ability to check your email is fantastic. My wife and I love to eat at Panera Bread which has Wi-Fi. The only minus is that the metal underneath the nice screen easily can be covered with fingerprints. This might drive some people crazy, as for me, I just grunt or shrug my shoulders. The box does come with a cloth so; no problem!
It is true that the Ipod touch is the most expensive out of all MP3 players but it's very sleek, easy to handle, easy to download songs on, and for anyone who likes to surf the internet or check their email; this is an outstanding product. I have a lot of cd's and time and time again they get scratched and repeat or don't play at all. It's time for me to put my cd's on my Ipod ( I did a few; it's easy!). I also bought this in preperation for my new car that has Microsoft Sync with an MP3 player jack. Enjoy!
Customer Review: I needed a new music player and got so much more! Summary: 5 Stars
I needed to replace my dead 30 gig ipod, so I first tried a 4g 8 gig nano. I ended up returning it because it wouldn't charge in any of my existing docks. Evidently apple changed the pin configuration or something- the ipod would play but would only charge via the usb port on my computer. Such a pain! Anyway, I found a smoking deal here on Amazon for the 16 gig 1st generation ipod touch. I basically needed a new ipod to play music, which is all I used the old one for. I was pleased with the larger screen and thought I might even watch a video or something on this new ipod. I was very happy with how easy it was to see details on the screen, and that I didn't need a microscope to see what was going on. I'm over 40 so I have to wear reading glasses to see most small print (another pain in the neck). Now that I've been using the new ipod for a couple of months, I find myself using this ipod differently than the old one. With this new ipod touch I download the free shows from itunes and watch them if the tv's at home are all hogged up with sports watching maniacs. I also like to download various podcasts and podcasts with video. The big screen is nice for displaying the album covers while I'm listening to music, and that new Genius feature is really cool. The other thing I love about this new ipod is the wi-fi that is built in and all the things that are included with that feature. I have it set to update my email every hour, so even if I'm in an area with no wi fi I can check my email and sort it out and dump the stuff I don't want. I occasionally use the internet browser that came with it and it seems easy to use. I have a wireless internet router at my home, and it was very easy to set up the ipod to use with the router. The password and unit number were right on the side of the router, so putting the info into the ipod was a piece of cake. I also am amazed at how easy it is to use the wifi when I'm out and about. If I try to go online the ipod will tell me if there are any networks around and if there is one I can use. I love that! There are tons of free apps to download (go to itunes, apps). I really like the flashlight app, and there are a couple of different ones that tell you the movie times which seem to work well. I've also downloaded some games which are fun to fiddle around with if I'm stuck waiting in a line and don't have my book, or if I'm waiting for somebody and don't want to be totally engrossed in reading while I'm waiting. Overall I give the new ipod touch a 9 out of 10. It's actually more of a ten, but I wanted to leave a little room for even more features that I haven't thought of yet.
