Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod shuffle 4 GB Silver (3rd Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Listen to the Other Reviewers, Read this if you workout!!!!! Summary: 2 Stars
I've had my shuffle for about 5 months and after the first couple of months of ownership, I had considered writing a positive review to offset some of the negative comments. My initial experience was very good and I really had no complaint with the product. I read all the negative comments and thought there is a problem with the earbud controls but I also thought it was limited and could be somewhat controlled. I am a runner and will run anywhere from 3 to 5 miles in a session. I really do like the new earbud control primarily because you can change volume or songs without breaking a stride and without looking at the iPod. I have also made an effort to keep perspiration away from the earbud controls but there is only so much you can do - especially in the hot, California sun. Well, about a month ago my earbud controller stop working and the volume was fixed at one level - a level that was a little on the loud side for me. After letting it dry it seemed to work but halfway through the run, I experienced the same problem. Now my shuffle is permanently set at the one volume level. While this isn't has bad as what some of the other customers' have experienced, it does validate what all the other reviewers are describing. If you workout with the new shuffle and perspire, you risk damaging the earbud which has about a $30 replacement cost. There has been several reviews that have discussed this problem but I wanted to add my comments since I too am extremely dissapointed with the design. I am still a fan of the earbud design but Apple needs to fix it moisture issue or put a large warning on the product.
Customer Review: if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Summary: 2 Stars
First, the voiceover feature is more of a gimmick than something useful. The device stores music that you upload. If you can't recognize your own songs, you're an idiot.
Second, moving the controls to the earbuds means you can't change to better earbuds; you're forced to stick with the ones Apple provides.
Last, the earbud controls are not nearly as intuitive or user-friendly as they are on the prior version. There are 3 buttons on the earbud control: two of them, a "+" and "-", are dedicated to adjusting volume. The center button does everything else. All of the major functions-- skipping forward, backward, playlists, voiceover-- are achieved by clicking the center button multiple times or pressing and holding. Apple has crossed the line where minimalist design goes from slick to annoying. A huge step back.
The old shuffle was small enough; shrinking an already tiny device by half again doesn't really provide the user with any advantage. The main advantage to a smaller device is weight, and the prior version already weighs next to nothing. Making it smaller still simply makes it easier to misplace the device. Apple would have saved money for itself and its customers by skipping the gimmicks and making the prior shuffle body a 4gb+ device.
Customer Review: The Actually PAID somebody to ruin the ipod Shuffle Summary: 2 Stars
Let's stop and think for a second of why I got the original shuffle???? I loved having a small player (about the size of a coin) and I could operate the controls in my sleep OR MOST IMPORTANT I could do it while I work out/running. Some idiot at Apple decided that they would design this thing for a cubicle hamster that did not have to try to locate a control that was bouncing around and then find the right control and try NOT to kill yourself in the process. This is one of the best examples of violating the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" rule I have ever seen in the commercial marketplace. Hopefully someone who actually uses this while moving will help Apple get back on track or at least keep the old ones in production, I have 2 of the old ones and I am guarding them like gold . Do not let me end this by saying the sound quality is bad, just that I am one of those people that goes out and buys a $40 pair of top end earbuds for my shuffle that I cannot use with this thing. If you are just sitting around listening to music at your desk this will do just find as long as you are satisfied with the sound quality of the included earbuds. Thats the only reason it gets 2 stars instead of 1.
Customer Review: Volume Control is the Weakness of the Otherwise Worthy iPod Summary: 2 Stars
I use my iPod when I exercise, and I do that most days. I like the lightness of this ipod, and I like being able to use playlists to control what songs or podcasts that I listen to. I use a regular iPod during the rest of the day, so I don't need advanced features. This one is somewhat nicer to clip to my shirt than my old Gen2 iPod.
What I don't like is the VOLUME CONTROL. It seems that the controller gets wet, and then it develops a mind of its own. Randomly increasing the volume. Preventing me from turning the volume down. Suddenly during the iPod off. This happens after about twenty minutes of exercise.
I sent my first iPod Gen 3 back to Apple because the Apple Support guy did not know what to do. Apple sent me a new one by FedEx, so that was good.
I was disappointed when the second Gen3 iPod did the same thing.
Now, I am thinking of wrapping the controller in teflon tape or something similar to waterproof it. It should not be too had to keep the ends dry. Truthfully, a few drops of epoxy glue would probably seal it well, but I would like to start with a temporary repair.
Customer Review: Caution for exercise use Summary: 2 Stars
Add me to the list. A week ago the headphones started malfunctioning while I was out running. The volume went way down and the voice over feature kept repeating the name of the song I was listening to over and over again. Soon enough, it wouldn't respond to anything. It worked intermittently as I used it for exercising over the next few days and eventually it stopped working correctly whether I exercised or not. I read up on the issue on the Apple discussion board and TONS of people were apparently having the same problem.
I went to the apple store and waited 2 freaking hours for a replacement set only for them to tell me they didn't have any in stock and had to wait a few days. I asked them if they had heard of this issue before and they had no clue what I was talking about as Apple seems to keep quiet about the issue. Terrible.
With all that being said, I loved this product when it did work (it's small, convenient, and can clip anywhere, but if the headphones don't work and I can't exercise with it (which is why I bought it in the first place), it's completely and utterly useless...
