Customer Review: expensive setup
Summary: 3 Stars

the new Ipod shuffle, the Idea/concept is excellent, but it is a very expensive setup in the long run. the reason why I classify it as such is because of the earbuds are the controller for the player as well, and by experience, they do not last that long, and when you need a new set of earbuds, the only option is the original from Apple, which is $79.00, almost the same as an entire new player itself. so by default, when your earbuds stop functioning, and trust me, they will real soon, you have the option of getting a new set of earbuds or an entirely new player, both will be about the same amount of monies. BIG DRAWBACK. admittedly, a regular pair of earbuds will work, if you do not want to shift around the songs, but just wasnt to listen to then like it used to be back in the days when we were using ordinary Audio Cassettes. but that concept sort of cancels out the entire idea of Random Playback...

Customer Review: So small it's annoying
Summary: 3 Stars

I'm a Mac enthusiast. I love iPods, so much I've had every accessory for each line. The incredibly small new iPod Shuffle at first seemed amazing, and so I purchased one from the apple store. Indeed, it is almost unbelievably tiny. But it's so small it's inconvenient. I also hate the fact I can't skip ahead to a song if it happens to be one I don't want to hear. The fact the remote is in itself high on the chord does not help either. Sure, this works great to take into a store to listen to music while shopping (and to avoid lugging around my 120gb Classic), but that's about it. It's hard to believe, but this is one Apple product that shouldn't have been released.

Customer Review: headphone agony!
Summary: 3 Stars

You have created this great little ipod, ideal for the athlete and yet the head phones are the worst! They slip out of your ears when you move and break really easily.I had to go several times to the website to try and figure out the controls...hard in Malaysia when downloading from the website is slow, slow, slow. In the end I found a demo on utube. So disappointing. Can you not create robust athlete style head phones that loop over the ear?????

Customer Review: new shuffle
Summary: 3 Stars

love the idea. concerned about the headphone control though; Ear buds always fall out of my ears. I would be first in line if they had wrap around earbuds that had the control buttons. Given my history of earbuds falling out, I'm less likely to go after this product.

Customer Review: A triumph of form over function.
Summary: 2 Stars

OK, I'll begin by saying that the new Shuffle is, without doubt, one of the smallest, sexiest MP3 players I've ever seen. I love how it looks. It's... compelling. Of course, with this level of form, some functionality is lost. With the 3G Shuffle, it's the buttons (or lack thereof).

Apple decided to move the buttons off the controller and onto the headphone cord. There are two major flaws that I can see:

1. I can't use "any old" pair of headphones anymore. Sure, the music still plays, but if I can't pause, skip, turn the volume up/down, what's the point. I'm now tied into either Apple's headphones or third-party headphones with the controller. Gone are the days of a "headphone catastrophe" where the headphone cord gets pinched while traveling and I have to run out to a store and grab a pair of substitute $10 phones. I now have to either shell out $20-30 and/or find a local Apple store. Not good. (And let's not even talk about using it with my car stereo...)

2. The controls are... in a bad place. It's kind of hard to grab the controller without looking when it's bouncing around near my jaw while running. Today, it took me about 5-6s to actually get a hold of the darned thing and skip ahead. Later in the day, I grabbed it a bit quicker but then accidentally yanked the earbud out. This was obviously designed without testing it "in the field."

To both of the above, some comment: "wait until Apple releases an adapter with controls in a better position that allow you to use normal headphones." Of course, my reply is "I already spent $80 on this thing. You want me to spend MORE?"

In the end, this is one sweet of technology that just screams "impress your friends." Of course, you don't hear it whispering "and secretly dread using me anywhere but in your living room chair."

At least Apple's not discontinuing the 2G Shuffle...
