Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod shuffle 4 GB Silver (3rd Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Great function, great price Summary: 5 Stars
Having had the new iPod nano for over month, I can say with confidence that I am very enthusiastic about it. I bought it partly for audiobooks and partly for music, so I needed an portable player that would have the following features:
(1) Memory of the playback position of an audiobook
(2) Shuffle, but without speech being mixed into the playback
(3) Multiple playlists with easy navigation
I also wanted to play protected MP4's and podcasts from Apple's iTunes store.
This iPod shuffle does everything above. The navigation is simple (triple-clicking is not as hard as it seems, and it's far better than having multiple buttons). It works great with audiobooks and podcasts. The remote control I have found to be very effective and useful -- I prefer it to having the controls on the device. (It also makes the device itself exquisitely small!) I believe it is the ONLY device under $100 that fulfils all these requirements.
The device has a single switch for on/off/shuffle, as well as a single port for the sychronization cord and the earbuds.
Not being a hardcore audiophile and not willing to purchase expensive earphones (and wanting to be aware of my surroundings -- no noise cancellation and no extreme volume!), I am absolutely fine with the prepackaged ones. It is possible, using the Scosche Polycarbonate case with integrated controls, to use better earphones while still maintaining control over the device. In addition, Apple sells high-quality In-ear Headphones that include the remote control.
I have never had a problem with malfunctioning due to sweat. I have taken hour-long walks in the daytime in summer. I have not sweated excessively or run marathons with it, so if that's what you expect to be doing, just get the iPod nano.
And -- if you want to be able to pick the exact song you want to listen to, go get the nano.
Customer Review: Tricky at first, takes off well after initial learning curve. Summary: 5 Stars
Apple's newest addition to the iPod Shuffle line is even smaller than before. Though longer, it is much thinner that it's predecessor. Part of the reason for it's smaller size is a lack of any controls (with the exception of the power/play-in-order/shuffle switch) on the device itself. I find really only two faults with the new iPod Shuffle.
Faults/Cons:
1. User Interface
The user interface on the new iPod Shuffle though well designed (more on how to use it in a minute), though poorly placed. The play controls (volume, play/pause, skip ->, <-, etc) are now on the cord of the right ear-piece. Why is this an inconvenience? Some users may dislike the Apple-made earphones. Personally, I prefer skull-candy earbuds. However, the sound quality on the included earphones appears to be fairly good to my untrained ears. But because there are no play controls on the device itself, I am unable to (until Apple releases an adapter) use a different pair of headphones unless I choose to buy Apple's expensive in-ear headphones. However, unless you are in a high-noise area, you should be fine.
2. Battery Life
The battery life of the new iPod Shuffle is advertised as about 10 hours. However, this is a fair compensation when the reduced size of the device is taken into account. Most users will not listen to their music for 10 hours straight anyway, thus allowing time to do some recharging.
Over-all grade?
I place the new iPod Shuffle at slightly lower than an A+. Though the placement of play controls can, for some, be an issue, the new iPod Shuffle is a pleasure to use.
Customer Review: Not For Spoiled Snobs Or Mentally Challenged Summary: 5 Stars
How many times have you seen people walking, running or working out with the plain old Apple ear buds that come with every single ipod?. Many times. I've seen the simple Apple ear buds many times more than I've seen any and all other earphones combined. Why? Because these earphones are perfectly fine for most people. This new ipod shuffle comes with headphones that work with it, headphones that most people will be happy with. This shuffle, smaller than a stick of gum, holds 1000 songs. You would think that would be an amazing thing but most of the reviews here, obviously from snobs who don't own the product, aren't impressed by that. In fact a few people have complained that this shuffle may be too small, that they might lose it. Judging from these reviews I would say that is a definite possibility. As an alternative may I suggest a Sony Discman or possibly a portable 8-Track tape player? These same people may also have trouble working the complicated controls on the headphone cord. This requires pushing a button once, twice, or 3 times quickly and sometimes holding down the button. It may be necessary to do this while walking. Chewing gum simultaneously is not recommended. May I suggest something by Fisher Price as an alternative?
Customer Review: Fearless and well-chosen Summary: 5 Stars
It is not serious to compare a portable iPod like the Classic 120GB or some other smaller portable players with the new iPod shuffle 4GB, they are designed for completely different situations. The iPod Classic 120GB is intended for profound music lovers that need portability, the newest iPod Shuffle is ideal and truly excellent for Gymnastics, jogging or sports in general (a majority of the people that buy this MP3 player), not for people who want to select albums and hundreds of songs or watch videos. Although excellent I have to admit you need the new Apple pair of In-Ear Headphones with remote if you want to run, not the free Earbuds included with the iPod shuffle 4GB. Apple ought to change this poor philosophy and be more generous: the earbuds are not useful for running or doing any physical exercise. The third generation of the iPod Shuffle is the only one (useful if you choose a few favorite songs, not many) it is possible to use the Apple Lossless Encoder: best sound quality, better than AAC or MP3. The iPod designers are really brave leaving out unnecessary features that a product like this does not need. Congratulations once more to the fearless ( heroic for conservative people) and right designers.
Customer Review: Best runners Ipod ever! Until you start sweating!! Summary: 5 Stars
Been running with the new shuffle this week and all I can say is this is my favorite of the 3 ipod shuffles. The 2nd gen shuffle weighed enough that when clipped to the bottom of my shirt it would bang against my leg when I ran. This new one is so light my shirt always laid flat, no bounce. Also with the 2nd gen it always took a few seconds to figure which way it was clipped on to make a change in vol. This new one is so easy to change vol while on the run. So if you are like me and want a player that holds lots of music, easy to adjust while running and so light it never bounces, then this one is for you.
Update after running with this shuffle for a while and getting sweat on the controls they have stopped working as everyone else has mentioned. This shuffle is useless for running unless you dont ever sweat.
