Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod shuffle 1 GB Green (2nd Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: Perfect No-brainer Player! Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, folks...I actually returned my 16GB iPod Touch to Costco in favor of the Shuffle!
Why? (Enquiring minds `Shirley' want to know!) Because, (and here's the irony) you absolutely *could not* operate that puppy by 'touch'! The Shuffle thingy, OTOH, is so simple, so light and so fool proof (but definitely not so-so), with excellent battery life and sound quality--not to mention the ability to operate it by feel in the dark--that, at literally 1/10th the cost ($39--refurbished through an Amazon reseller-- vs $389 for the Touch--Costco's discounted price), I am now, unequivocally, enjoying a superior listening/operating experience (your smileage may vary).
Okay... reality check... Needless to say, the Shuffle holds but a fraction of your hard won (er, stealthily torrented) groovy bits 'n bytes compared with the Touch and, true, it has no WiFi/browser/high-rez multi-touch/uber-cool screen factor to crow about; on the other hand, it *is* nearly indestructible and perfect for my primary love (drumroll)... Books on Tape.
I now routinely check-out Books on Tape (actually on CD) from my local library and, using iTunes, in conjunction with a $15 dollar shareware audiobook-automating program (called Markable), convert them to a single bookmarkable file. The typical 8 to 10 CD `book', when employing the amazingly high quality default 64KBPS 'spoken podcast' preset (found under the Edit/Preferences/Advanced submenu of iTunes), results in an aproximately 220 to 240 MB file. Ergo, one can fit (aprox) 4 unabridged 8 to 10 disc Books on Tape (er, CD) on one's 1GB Shuffle--and each book maintains its own (unique) bookmark reliably! Of course, you can purchase the same file from [...], but that gets expensive quick.
Turns out the Shuffle is absolutely *great* for working out (especially I find, during one-armed handstand push-ups), driving to work (ironically, I work in a drive-thru) or just puttering around the yard (with my Big Bertha driver). Just click (by feel) the large n' tactile central play/pause button and off you go... within seconds you're enjoying that Pee Wee Herman autobiography you'd been longing to dig into for so long. You don't even have to turn it off... once paused, after 5 minutes or so, it automatically goes to sleep... to restart, just click twice. The convenient, strong built in clip is great too... I usually attach it to the diamond encrusted LaCoste logos on my polos and it clamps on reliably (okay, okay... they're Cubic...).
This signature ease of use was sorely missing from the Touch, with its marked paucity of 'feelable' buttons and non-existant even rudimentary in-line controls on the headphones... Such unfriendly design was, `Touch glam' aside, a major hassle, and to be honest, deal-breakingly downright dangerous when driving (sorry for the 'alit hit' there!). Conversely, the (um, non-existant) 'touch-screen' on the postage stamp-size Shuffle leaves something to be desired when viewing Laurence of Arabia (esp. `Ultrawide Director's Cut' or `IMAX' versions).
Bottom line--you just can't go wrong with the Shuffle, especially at $39 (approaching semi-disposable?!?)! I also would recomemend this groovy gizmo to those owners of pricier players to use in their stead when engaging in risky behaviors (ie, sauntering provocatively into, say, a Star Trek convention in one's Wookie suit (abomination!)...you know who you are!).
Well, thanks for reading... and now go forth (with a `fifth'?) and 'Listen long and prosper'!
