Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod classic 80 GB Silver (6th Generation) OLD MODELCustomer Review: I love my iPod Classic! Summary: 5 Stars
I just upgraded to an iPod Classic from an iPod Photo. I considered going to the iPod Touch but I someday want an iPhone so the Classic is a good interim step.
I work in IT and see a lot of technology and a lot of "innovations" that often don't work or are poorly regression tested. In other words, the "new" versions often have bugs that the the "old" version did not. This is not the case with the iPod Classic.
I am constantly amazed by Apple's ability to get "get it right". I'm not saying the Classic is perfect but it is truly innovative and well executed. The Classic is slim, sturdy, and most importantly it just works. When I connected my new Classic to my computer; it recognized it immediately and just downloaded the music. No fuss...no reconfiguring... no reloading of anything...it just worked. Then I decided to move my iTunes library to my MacBook. The first thing I did was backup my music to a DVD. This took a few mouse clicks and about 10 minutes to complete. Then I uploaded it to iTunes on my MacBook, synched the new Classic and I was back in business. Some things did not synch becasue of DRM but that's not Apple's fault.
Some reviewers have said that the Cover Flow on the new Classic is a little slow to reload the cover art when you flip from page to page. I found this to be true as well, but it is by no means a problem. I also used my new Classic to keep myself occupied on a 6 hour flight last week. The video, while small, is clear and easy on the eyes. The small form factor is a big plus in the cramped airplane seat.
In summary, this is a truly innovative product, with nice upgrades to the software, form factor, and materials. Highly recommended.
Customer Review: A great replacement Summary: 5 Stars
After I broke my iPod 3 years ago I swore I'd never go back, and drifted for several years through a series of lesser-known mp3 players. But after I mysteriously lost my last one, I thought maybe I'd spend a little more and get something I could watch at the gym as well as listen to while I do homework.
True, it could have more functions (my last mp3, a Sansa 8GB, had a FM radio and a voice recorder, plus a micro SD slot if I needed more space), and though pretty I still do think that Cover Flow is really quite useless. But it works extremely well, much faster than my Sansa in terms of skipping and finding songs. Seeing that the movies can really be watched and scrolling isn't a problem at all despite it being a touchpad, I felt more motivated to actually organize my music stash and find out how to rip videos (which, in turn, made everybody come to me for help ripping them; not a bad feeling when I'm usually technologically illiterate).
It fits nicely in the hand, and the weight is really nothing to worry about. With a silicon cover, I don't have to worry about dropping it anymore like I did with the first one. When you watch movies, the screen is crystal-clear and perfectly bright, each color beautifully illuminated (I really didn't expect it to be able to display such color). With the headphones, sound is very clear and the volume is also within the range I usually use it at. All in all, I'm very satisfied with what my iPod gives me, despite it being pricier than the last mp3 I had (but it's still a very good deal for the amount of space it has!).
Customer Review: Don't Believe All The Reviews Summary: 5 Stars
I've never written a review before, but felt I had to this time because some of the negative reviews here almost kept me from buying a terrific product. Specifically, I was concerned about comments about the scroll wheel not functioning properly, and about comments about accessories for previous iPods not working on the Classic.
Fortunately, I went to Best Buy and was able to play with their display model for quite a while. I used the scroll wheel extensively and found that I had no problems with it at all.
All my accessories for my iPod minis work with the Classic, including my AC charger and the adapter I use to listen to the iPod through my car radio.
I was surprised at how watchable video is on the Classic; I thought the small screen would be impossible. But, the picture quality is so good that I actually find that I would watch videos on this iPod while traveling. I've been converting video files and loading them onto the Classic with zero problems.
I've had no problems syncing the Classic with iTunes either. I wonder if those having problems are limited by computer resources. I have a HP Pavilion running XP with 2Gb of RAM.
All in all, I'm thrilled with the Classic and strongly recommend that folks check it out for themselves rather than just believing the reviews (including this one!).
Customer Review: Very Cool Summary: 5 Stars
I upgraded from a the 5th generation 8gb nano to the iPod Classic 80gb this week, and though I have only used this iPod several times, I have to say that it is the coolest.
I was anti iPod for a very a long time. They didn't make sense to me; plus I loved going to music stores, combing through the stacks to find something new to take home and listen to. Well, these days it is more difficult to get to the music store, and the RADIO stinks. I went through a few years of really not caring about music. Then I discovered iTunes which is one of the best inventions ever in my opinion. I have discovered so many great musicians and albums through iTunes and have built a fairly large library of music over the past year.
My nano still works great and I will continue to use that in the gym, but my Classic holds all my songs; it sounds better than my nano; it responds better than my nano. Plus, I don't know if this is also a feature of the 5g iPod Video, but I like knowing how many songs are in each of my playlists; I like scrowling the coverflow, stopping on a paticular album, knowing what songs I have from that album.
The Classic really is very cool to play, and it is attractive. I think it is a must have for any music lover out there.
Customer Review: Lovin' it Summary: 5 Stars
I've only previously owned a 4th gen 40GB iPod, so I can't comment on the 'downgrade' issues from the last generation iPods, but so far I am very, very happy with my new 80GB classic. Installation was a breeze. I already had iTunes set up with all my music, so all I had to do was load up iTunes and plug in the iPod, and automation took care of the rest. The iPod charged up in a few hours. That simple!
The 80GB classic is perfect for what I use it for: listening to my entire music collection from one convienent place. I've been listening to it for many many hours straight, and it's barely even touched the battery. The screen is nice and vibrant for looking at all the cover art, and the backlight auto shuts off to save on batteries when you aren't using it, especially useful when it's just sitting in your pocket or glovebox. The brushed aluminum looks very stylish and gives it a more solid feel. The clickwheel can be a little sluggish at times, but I've never found myself irritated by it.
All in all an excellent purchase. Extremely impressed by the battery life. I'm glad I waited a little longer to buy an iPod, as we now get 80GB of storage instead of 30GB for the same price.
