Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple iPod classic 80 GB Silver (6th Generation) OLD MODEL

Customer Review: Great MP3 Player
Summary: 5 Stars

When I was looking for an music player for my birthday, I looked right away at the iPod. My sister, four or five years ago, got the Apple Ipod 20GB 4th Generation and has been pleased with it (never replaced because she doesn't want to use it for videos). A friend of mine told me to look at the Zune 80 GB Digital Media Player Black (2nd Generation) that he has, but I tried using his and the navigation is a bit confusing after being used to the iPod's click wheel. They were about the same price on their sales, plus I also got a free $25 iTunes card at Best Buy.

I was also looking at the iPods Nano and Touch. The Apple iPod nano 8 GB Black (3rd Generation) has 1/10th of the capacity of the 80GB Classic, but was only $50 less, and I couldn't fit all of my music/videos on. The Apple iPod touch 16 GB with Software Upgrade, although it has a much larger screen and more interesting features (including wifi access) and has probably enough space (for now, anyways) , costs $150 more!

I never buy electronic equipment (except maybe accessories) from Amazon because of Best Buy's Geek Squad tech support-plus, if you have a problem, you don't have to go through the pain of trying to return it via Amazon. My iPod actually crashed 3 times after I bought it and I all I had to do to replace it each time was just take a 5 minute drive to the Best Buy, talk to the Geek Squad person who checked it out and deemed me worthy of an exchange. After the fourth crash, I just took it to the Apple store, where they told me it wasn't a problem with the iPod, rather with a corrupt file on it, which I couldn't have found out if I just returned it to Amazon. Since then, I deleted that file and it's been working great ever since.

The earbuds are a pain in the butt to use, but I just got some Sony MDR-Q68LW Clip-on Style Headphone with Retractable Cord. They eliminated the tangling of the ear bud cord. Also, they're more comfortable.

The back can get easily scratched, even from just taking it out of and putting it back into your pocket. This can be easily remedied by purchasing a silicone skin (if you buy a skin made for the 30/60GB fifth generation iPod, you can save a bunch of money, since they're the same size) or you can buy a case for a medium sized camera (like the Lowepro Ridge 10 (Arctic Blue))

Customer Review: Better than I expected!
Summary: 5 Stars

Let me say this from the start. I am not an Apple fan-boy. When I started researching high capacity media players, I decidedly did not want an iPod. My reasons, I did not want to pay a premium for the "brand name", and I did not like what I had heard about Apple "bricking" people's hacked iPhones when they performed service updates. What I initially wanted was the (now discontinued) Creative Zen 60GB M Vision. My wife has a 20GB Zen Sleek Photo, which I really liked a lot. So, why did I reluctantly go with the 80gb iPod Classic in the end? Audible.com was offering a promotion at the time that took $100 off the price of the iPod Classic when purchased through Amazon. I could not pass that up, even if it meant joining the crowd and supporting Apple. And, I am not sorry in the least!

The 80GB iPod Classic is a really great player! I have to hand it to Apple. I can see now why they corner the market on hand held media players. It's because they (by far) make the best ones! The interface is so easy and visually pleasing. Coverflow is the coolest way I have seen to browse albums on any player. The battery life is very good! I use my iPod mostly when I exercise, and I only have to recharge it after many hours of use. I have found that dimming the back light helps with this as well. This player is so sleek and small. It is noticeably lighter and thinner than my wife's 20gb Zen. I also like Apple's normalization feature "sound check" (listed in the settings menu). Rarely do I have to lower or raise the volume while listening to my iPod while this feature is engaged. But if I do, the scroll wheel makes it easy without having to even look at the player while I adjust the volume. I love that!

A couple things to note.

1. The ear phones that come with the iPod Classic do not do the player justice. If you are willing to shell out $250 for a high capacity media player, I suggest you also invest in the best earphones you can afford. I use Etymotic Research's "ER6i Isolator In-Ear Earphones". They run about $75 at Amazon! I have reviewed them separately. But, I will tell you that I encode all my mp3 files at 256bps (twice the 128bps standard), and my music sounds crystal clear and bright with dynamic highs and lows through these earphones.
2. Buy a clear screen protector and a clear case protector for the back of this iPod before you start using it. These things scratch easily! Protect your investment.
3. Lastly, my only criticism is this. Occasionally, my iPod takes a few seconds to respond. My guess is that the hard drive is busy. This is not a big deal, but it does happen.

In conclusion, I would recommend this player without reservation or hesitation. I love it! Rarely have I been as pleased with, or gotten as much pleasure from a piece of consumer electronics I have purchased.

Customer Review: Very good...IF you know how to get the most out of it.

Let me start by saying that I have never been a fan of Apple. Their products always seemed over-rated. I had a Creative Zen Micro and I got the iPod Classic for Christmas. I have to say that I'm really enjoying it. However, since I haven't been an Apple fan, I've gotten savvy to several things that help you get the most out of the iPod.

1. Do not waste ANY money on iTunes. This will lock you into Apple's little system and you will wind up buying iPods in the future no matter how good the competition is. So save yourself the trouble, support the artist, and buy the CD. Also, be careful not to rip to AAC. There is hardly any difference in quality between AAC and MP3, but MP3 will work for ANY device (AAC only works for iPods and several others).

2. Learn how to use other sources of content other than the iTunes Store. You do not have to spend tons of money re-buying movies you already own on DVD so you can play them on your iPod. There are ways to get those DVDs onto your iPod for free, you just have to do some research. Also, you can get YouTube videos, TV shows on DVD, and tons of other stuff if you just do some digging for the right programs.

3. Get a BSE. BSE stands for Best Skin Ever. They are incredibly tough, nearly invisible skins. They cost about $6-7 and make the iPod almost completely scratch resistant. This will protect your screen and the chrome backing from scratches.

Those three tips address my three main problems with the iPod. Though I cannot attest to the scratchability of the iPod (I applied the BSE as soon as I took it out of the box), I am sure it is much better with the aluminum cover. However, the chrome backing and screen are still prone to scratches I believe.

Despite my hatred for the iTunes Music Store, I love the iTunes software. It creates a great integration with the iPod so that my collection on my iPod and my computer are one and the same, with nothing being "watered down" on the iPod.

I also love the new look to the iPod. The aluminum is classy and the device is amazingly thin. With the BSE, it has stayed in flawless condition.

Sound quality is good but I'm not an audiophile by any means.

Watching movies and tv shows on the iPod is a great way to kill time. Also the included games (particularly "Vortex") are a lot better than I would've thought.

Overall, if you watch out for several pitfalls, and learn to get the most out of your iPod, it is definitely one of the best players out there.

Customer Review: My new BFF

This is my first ipod ever.
Everyone I know has a ipod and i finally bought one, This one to be exact.
I didnt buy it from amazon but a pawnshop for $95, wierd no. I should of bought the 120GB for $100 but didnt do it and Im still pissed at myself.
Anywho, I love my ipod.
I have all my favorite songs on it, some anime and still trying to put movies on it. X-x
Im glad I didnt buy the shuffle or a smaller one b/c out of all the cds I put on itunes I had over 2,000. *FYI I jam out to showtunes*
It holds enough songs and videos to begin with and I still have 62.2 GB free. *Unfortunately I cant hold much info on my cheesey computer as I would like so i can transfer it to my ipod.*
Thing that stinks about it is the battery power.
I had to lower the brightness tremendously and the backlight to 2 seconds when it wasnt in use. If I didnt, the backlight would stay on for the longest time and drain the battery.
After I fixed the backlight to stay on for 2 seconds the battery didnt die out as quickly. The screen was VERY bright and I had to lower it, so it wouldnt hurt my eyes, and that helped a bunch.
Also, fast forwarding through songs/videos or scrolling throught the menu will drain the battery. =S *Again if I didnt change the settings then it would drain quickly as heck. Highly annoying* NOTE: THIS IS ALL BEFORE I CHANGED THE SETTINGS!!!!
Once I did, the scrolling didnt drain my battery TREMENDOUSLY!!! Everything was sunflowers and daisys.
As the screen size to view movies, I like it. Its okay, I do have a dvd portable player that I can watch movies on.
But as for this ipod, Its not TOO tiny or too small, that I can read the subtitles, whennI'm watching anime.
This is my first ipod and Im still working out the bugs and all.
Still its pretty good.
If you like watching films or music videos *that you can also get from youtube* then this would be good for you.
Oh, the size. Its not too big for my back pockets and I would HIGHLY recommend getting a case for it b/c it kept slipping out of my hands when I held it. I got a cheap skin at walmart for $4.*they sell them at the front registers*
Also, to charge it, I dont know but I prefer getting a wall charger for it. I hated leaving my computer on to charge the darn thing but once I worked everything out its worth it.
Now that I worked the bugs out my ipod battery power last for the longest time and have no problems..as of now.

Customer Review: bad reviews are misleading
Summary: 5 Stars

I read the bad reviews here and they are all very particular and specific and odd (i.e., the problems these people are having will probably never happen to you). This version of the iPod is probably going to be the last in its line before they switch over completely to the iPod Touch version. But when I was trying to figure out which one to go with RIGHT NOW, the Touch is 400 freakin' dollars and it only has 16 GB on it! That's nothing as far as I'm concerned - maybe I'm spoiled but I like putting all sorts of things on my iPod besides my entire record collection which is around 35 GB right off the bat. The iPod "Classic" is not perfect or ideal (starting with its stupid name)- the ideal would be an iTouch with 80 GB or higher - but its pretty sweet. The games on it work really well once you get used to the wheel, as far as I know there are no games on the iTouch. The video looks really good on the iPod Classic too. As far as the meat is concerned which is the music, the cover flow works fine - all that stuff about it being too sluggish is b.s. - the sound quality is really good and it comes with about 20 preset EQ settings which are nice. Sync with iTunes is really easy and almost fun and in short its just really simple to use and does the job. My advice is to get this one and wait for Apple to release an iTouch with more GB later, which might take awhile but I just have a hard time paying 400 dollars for 16 gb just so I can move an album cover across the screen with my finger. p.s. yeah, the itouch has the wi-fi internet capability but I have trouble digesting what I read about it, like no java - that's a big setback, most of my favorite websites rely on that -otherwise I'm just looking at an incredibly shrunken version of a website and that doesn't really do much for me.
