Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Time Capsule MC343LL/A 1TB Sim DualBand [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Going to update in case of an issue
Summary: 5 Stars

Seriously now-I loved the whole Time Capsule idea from the moment I bought the iMac 2.8GHz. But 500GB was only big enough for one Mac (and I had plans for 3) and also the reliability on the first two generations really was abysmal. As for the real MC343LLA deal, it only got hot (i.e. discomforting) after backing up the better part of 80GB of data, and turning the air conditioner which was in the room with it up full blast fixed that by the time I woke up. It also helped that the two laptops together had less than 140GB of data, most of it inherited from the iMac which is the core computer in our home network (and as a desktop, has its own 640GB Maxtor external HD which also got abysmal reviews) and between the supercooling and a novel technique to everyone else (everyone else may not like it, but we live by it here) of PRAYING for our computer equipment to live long enough to fulfill its purpose, however long that may be, I have not had one lick of issues with any of the things I really need, and the things I need the most change periodically to be completely fair. But right now, the Time Capsule is needed, we're praying for it, and the prayers plus supercooling are keeping it on record as one of the coolest unmodified Time Capsules I have ever seen.

By the way, some reviewers call the Time Capsule (especially the older generation 18 month crap out units) a "time cap", and I think that is a riot. And I am not joking. I also like the rendition "timecapsule", as Microsoft Sam in the Windows XP Speech Control Panel pronounces it funny. Just calling it "capsule" is also good too. I really laugh when I see those, seriously now.

To wrap up, the wireless network created by our Time Capsule is called "Time Capsule Of Choice" because the MC343LL/A model was the perfect choice. So far, not regretting it, will update at 3 weeks, 2 months, 12 months, 14 months, 18 months, 19 months, 20 months, 21 months, and 2 years if anything goes wrong. Hopefully between supercooling, keeping it off in summer, praying, and AppleCare on my MacBook Pro, everything will be optimal. If it's still working when it's time to write my master's thesis I will probably make it into a master's thesis somehow!

Until the first benchmark, adios...

Update 3-16-2011: Just wanted to test the Time Capsule more and my idea of supercooling it has seen it through the three-week problem period and beyond, just 10 days away from 2 months out (bought it on January 26th and my computer says it is March 16th. Supercooling increases the electric bill, but if one wants to prove all the Time Capsule naysayers wrong, as I do, a 4th Generation (MC343LL/A or MC344LL/A Time Capsule and an air conditioner right by the TIme Capsule that's on whenever the Time Capsule is (a small 5,000 BTU unit at that) has so far kept the Time Capsule supercooled and happy, and that makes me happy.

I love being able to remotely access my Time Capsule with MobileMe, although 10.7 with it's free but crippled (requires always up-to date hardware and software) MobileMe will put that all to rest I am afraid. I have enjoyed the way 10.6 and the MobileMe implementation on it have just worked with each other and all I had to give up (once I had the hardware) was $99 for one whole year, but who knows what will happen once the second year of MobileMe coverage I paid for starts and 10.7 is released with it's free from h-e-double hockey sticks MobileMe...

Even without MobileMe, knowing my 10.6 installations on my 2 laptops (plus the iMac through the external HD plugged into the Time Capsule-since it doesn't have AppleCare, I can do that with impunity) are backed up and my Time Capsule at least has proved the naysayers wrong at one point and is about to do so at a second is much relieving.

Hope the drought in updates has been worth it with the refreshed information!

End Update 3-16-2011...
