Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Time Capsule MB276LL/A (AirPort Extreme Plus 500 GB Storage)

Customer Review: Another reason I switched to Mac
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently switched to the Mac world after years of PC use. I had an iPod and loved the way it "just worked" the way it was supposed to. I bought a MacBook Pro, and decided to upgrade my wireless network to Time Capsule because it offered both 802.11n wireless speed and a built-in hard drive for backups. Time Capsule followed my experiences with iPod and the MacBook Pro -- everything works as it is supposed to work.

Setup took 10 minutes (I followed the instructions as written), and the first Time Machine backup was a little slow (3 hours for 80 GB), but not as slow as I had feared from some of the reviews. I did use an ethernet cable for the first backup as the documentation suggested. The other backups are quick, and they run in the background so I do not even notice them any more. The box does get a little warm, but I would not say that it is hot, as others have stated.

Overall, I am extremely pleased with my purchase. I would highly recommend it.

Customer Review: Peace of mind

I got the 500 GB model of the Time Capsule to back up my PowerBook G4 running Leopard. It replaced an older Airport base station. I was slightly confused initially about how to move the existing settings over, but the set up went quite smoothly. I set up Time Machine to backup everything on my laptop. I did my first backup using gigabit ethernet. The backup took over 5 hrs for about 80 GB of data-yes it does take at least 10 times longer than the theoretical speed of the ethernet. Since I take my laptop to work everyday, this set up works well for me. As soon as I am home and turn on the PowerBook, Time Machine does its thing. So far Time Capsule has worked flawlessly. It has not required any resetting or unpowering- something I had to do with the previous base station when my wireless connections went south. I recommend Time Capsule without any reservations- works as advertised. Painless backup-all backups should work like this.

Customer Review: The Best Way to Backup a Mac Laptop
Summary: 5 Stars

I've been using Time Machine since I upgraded to Leopard. While Time Machine is great for backing up my iMac, its a pain to have to hook up my Mac Book Pro and new Mac Book Air to an external hard drive. The Time Capsule is great for that. So long as my laptop is open and running, a backup can happen.

Make sure you remember to do your first backup using ethernet. Otherwise it is going to be slow. Apple does not want to bog down your network with backups, so when you are backing up wirelessly, it will intentionally throttle the connection sped.

This device also functions as a wireless router. I was able to remove my previous Air Port Extreme from the network. The large size is nice because you are able to share one large drive and backup several smaller computers. My iMac and laptop all backup just fine.

The device does run a little hot. The Best Way to Backup a Mac Laptop

Customer Review: Sometimes, you can buy convenience.
Summary: 5 Stars

It's basically a wireless router with an integrated NAS (network accessible storage device). It also shares USB devices like printers (but not speakers, as with the AirPort Extreme).

Setup is very easy - almost zero configuration. Up and running in 3 minutes. The interface is as straight-forward as possible. (I'm a networking geek and have seen many junk interfaces.)

Seems to do everything I need. DHCP reservations, port-mapping, etc. Time Machine backups are flawless. Poof, now I have an secure network drive which I can even access from off-site. Well designed, well thought-out.

You could probably assemble an equivalent configuration for a few dollars less - but you'd likely spend a lot of time in integration and configuration.

Recommended.

Customer Review: Great Product!
Summary: 5 Stars

Got this as a replacement for an older Linksys router and to use automatic backups with Time Machine. Works perfectly! Setup is easy if the instructions are followed exactly. One thing that I had to do was to reset my cable modem after setup like the instructions say. After I did that I was up and running. I was a little hesitant to buy at first, reading a lot of negative reviews, but I think the key is to follow the instructions. All of my laptops and my network printer are working great with this router. I have two Macbooks and one laptop running Vista and one running XP. I also have the Wii console working with this. All were easy to configure and work well. The backups are also easy. The first backup takes awhile so do it overnight. A little pricey but It works very well.
