Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Mighty Mouse KitCustomer Review: Innovative for its time, but easily surpassed by a MacBook's multitouch pad Summary: 3 Stars
The mighty mouse is a small and stylish mouse. It has a short and supple cord, designed to be plugged in to an adjacent keyboard or laptop. The mouse itself is closer in size to a typical laptop mouse than the typical thick desktop mouse.
The coolest feature of the Mighty Mouse is that the shell is touch sensitive. While previous apple mice were limited to a single button, the Mighty Mouse can register a left or right click depending on where on the mouse you press. In 2007, this was a brilliant innovation. Today it seems to lag behind the gigantic multitouch pads included in the latest MacBooks.
Another innovation was the tiny x-y scroll ball. This is nearly identical to the trackballs included on recent blackberries. The only difference is that the Mighty Mouse scroll ball can't be removed for cleaning. Over time the scroll ball will accumulate dust and become harder and harder to use.
I still use my Mighty Mouse on my desktop. The multi-touch trackpad on my MacBook Pro is so great that I'm unlikely to ever plug a mouse in to it.
If you love the style of the Mighty Mouse, go for it. There are more functional pointing devices available today.
Customer Review: no maintenance option Summary: 3 Stars
I have been a Mac user since the first one came out and have had about 20 of them by now right up to the latest MacBook andthe last [plastic body] 24" iMac . The iMac came with the new mouse and Functionally it is great. It has almost as many options as a game controller although I do not use all of them. The side button s were a little sensitive or my grasp was not and I kept accidently activating them. I turned them off but will probably try again.
A great feature as well as the major problem is the tiny built in track ball. It works great until it gets dirty. Right now mine only works in three directions but not down. This is a major inconvenience. As people experienced with the old mice with that worked on a ball principle may remember, you often had to pull the ball out, clean it and clean the rollers. It was not a big deal and was relatively easy to do. The mighty mouse has no provision to clean the ball or associated detectors. To open the mouse up to clean it is a tricky proposition involving the removal of a glued in ring.
The only reason I can come up with for this design is that apple hopes to sell a lot of replacements like the one that I am buying
Customer Review: Not My Favorite... Summary: 3 Stars
I'm a big fan of Apple products and this mouse is certainly better than a mouse you'd find bundled with a Dell or HP computer. But, there are definitely better mice out there and after 6 months I had to replace mine.
PROS:
- Sleek, slim and lightweight for a mouse.
CONS:
- The trackball behavior is spotty at best. I'm not a fan of the "grinding" feedback from the trackball, I much prefer the smooth scrolling action of a mouse from MS.
- As with any other Apple product, the price you pay for owning a slick, streamlined product is that you're unable to open the product up for maintenance. After a few months of use, dirt accumulated within the trackball area and there is no way to open the mouse up for a cleaning (without special tools and some technical know-how). As a result, the trackball would stop scrolling in certain directions.
- $$$$$. If this were a $15 mouse, I'd gladly keep buying these. At the $50 price point, there are a LOT of better mice available to choose from with better ergonomics and extra functions.
Customer Review: when it works, it's great Summary: 3 Stars
I got this mouse when my work computer was upgraded. When it works, it's awesome. The scroll wheel is great, the side buttons launching spaces is super easy and convenient, and I love the sensitivity.
Drawbacks: I've already had to use the can o air on the scroll wheel a couple times (had the mouse for about 3 weeks). It decided to stop scrolling up one day because it was dirty I guess. Today, the side buttons have stopped working, and even after cleaning and unplugging they still won't work. So not sure what's wrong there. Also, there is apparently a 3rd mouse button (left click is 1, rt click is 2, side buttons are 4) that launches dashboard. I sometimes manage to click this 3rd button on accident, but not matter how hard I try I can't seem to find where the point on the mouse is to click it on purpose.
Final opinion: for no more than $20, I'd buy this for home. But because of these issues, I'll be sticking to my regular 'windows' bluetooth mouse for home, because this one seems to be much too moody.
Customer Review: Needs design work Summary: 3 Stars
This is a great mouse, in that it looks very good, the functions are useful and intuitive and it is easy to manage. The only bad thing is that same issue everyone has, the wheel. It is the most useful part of the mouse, but stops working. I have one at work and one at home and both are already having issues. The one at work too a few month, but the one at home took a few weeks. I can't scroll up at home and I can't scroll down at work. Yes, I can take them to the Mac store and exchange them, yes I can blow air in them for a temporary fix. However, for the price it should not be an issue. One would think that the company that brought us the iPhone would have a touch screen o their mouse, but no.
