Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Magic MouseCustomer Review: A Mouse that Works Summary: 5 Stars
The Apple Magic Mouse is a true Apple product in that it "just works." This is a product that is of fantastic and simple design and is easy to use. I opened the mouse when it arrived from Amazon, turned a switch on, and it then worked immediately and just as advertised. This is how a product "experience" should unfold, yet I find such an unfolding increasingly infrequent with technology products. Kudos to Apple for making this product work so well.
The most impressive feature with this mouse is the multi-touch surface. I find myself scrolling with a mouse more and more frequently, and the Apple Magic Mouse makes the scrolling experience smooth, easy, and nearly effortless. Most other mice use some type of "roller" for scrolling functionality -- this mouse senses your touch and can even apply "momentum" to the direction and acceleration of your finger movements.
Apple Magic Mouse seems to "know" what you want the cursor to do. It makes the interface experience notably better as compared to all other input devices that I have used. I highly recommend the Apple Magic Mouse.
Arther C. Clarke is famous for having said, "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." While the Apple Magic Mouse does not feel quite like magic, it is sufficiently advanced to warrant a purchase.
Customer Review: Best Apple mouse yet Summary: 5 Stars
I was quite happy with my last generation, the Apple wireless Mighty Mouse. This one has the improvement of multi-touch. I actually don't use that feature much yet. So far I only scroll on the multi-touch surface, which works just about the same as using the little track ball on the old Mighty Mouse.
I can, however, point out some improvements with the Mighty Mouse, besides the multi-touch surface.
1. The battery life is longer. I am guessing the detector is more sensitive so the lamp does not bleed as much energy. No matter what I get a few extra weeks out of a pair of AA's
2. The comfort is a little better. I was happy with my Mighty, but now after the Magic the old Mighty feels like a brick, a little too tall.
3. The on-off switch is better. With the Mighty I always had a problem putting my laptop to sleep (in clamshell mode). I would click sleep and then the next step was to put the mouse to sleep by sliding the cover over its window. Unfortunately I could never do that without clicking and waking the clamshell computer back up. So I just gave up and usually turned the laptop off. Now the Magic mouse has a nice slide switch off to the side so I can turn off the mouse without waking up my clamshelled laptop. I highly appreciate that improvement.
Customer Review: Not so magic... BUT BETTER Summary: 5 Stars
I'm trying really hard to like this mouse. I think the design is fabulous and the gesture functionality is truly amazing. As always, Apple has created a fantastic form-follows-function approach to their industrial design chic.
The problem is that they screwed up the easy part - the Bluetooth connection. My Magic Mouse is continually dropping its connection to my MacBook. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. I'm working away and I reach to use the mouse and ... NOTHING. I click it, move it, turn it off then back on and still nothing. I do what I need to do using the trackpad on my MacBook and continue working. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, the Magic Mouse connection is magically restored.
I find the problem frustrating on several levels. $69 was expensive for a mouse, even one as elegantly designed as this. Apple is surely aware of the problem (there are posts all over their support forums), but hasn't responded with a software update yet. The whole thing seems so silly - they have the greatest personal computer OS, great computer hardware, etc., but they can't make a decent mouse. HELP STEVE JOBS, HELP!!!
UPDATE - 2/2/10
Turns out I had a faulty mouse. Apple replaced it under warranty. So far so good with the new unit. I'm really enjoying it.
Customer Review: Well Worth The Wait Summary: 5 Stars
After getting the chance to use this mouse for a full day, I can say that it was well worth the wait. As a die-hard apple fan, I have grown fond of the mighty mouse - now called the apple mouse - but the one thing that I loathed was the scroll ball located on top of the mouse. After only hours of use, gunk would build up rendering the scroll useless unless you wanted to perform mouse surgery using an exacto knife. Through incorporation of multi-touch technology, Apple has eliminated this problem, and created a device which is truly revolutionary.
I, like many, was worried about the ergonomics of the mouse given its low profile however I am happy to report that I have been quite pleased at how solid it feels in my hands and the overall ergonomics of the device. I also have not had any troubles with scroll or tracking speed, in fact I've found them to be significantly better than the mighty mouse. I also have not had to adjust either of these settings higher as others have said, the magic mouse truly worked straight out of the box with no adjustments. All in all, this mouse was well worth the wait and I can only imagine the possibilities future updates will bring in terms of gesture support!
Customer Review: nearly perfect Summary: 5 Stars
The Magic Mouse is nearly perfect. Apple has really done their homework on this mouse and the proof is in the pudding.
There are 4 aspects I look for in every mouse and here is how the Apple Magic Mouse fits the bill.
1. Comfort - The mouse fits perfectly in the hand and has a smooth feel. There are no crazy angles that would cause unwanted pressure to the wrist or hand.
2. Tracking Accuracy - The mouse is very accurate with no skipping or ghosting. The touch surface is very accurate and responds easily to each gesture that is thrown at it. I will say though, the touch surface is very sensitive so just bumping it slightly with the tip of a third finger in a two finger click will cause some issues.
3. Quality/Durability - Quality seems to be very good. The mouse feels weighty and has substance. It does not feel cheaply made or weak.
4. Ease of Use - The mouse is very easy to use and the gestures are similar to the gestures you would use on a MacBook, iPhone, or iPad. It does not take long to learn and master the gestures.
If you are looking for a major upgrade to your input experience, spend the extra money to get the best.
