Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Magic Mouse

Customer Review: apple magic mouse might prevent repetitive strain injury if you can get it out of the packaging without hurting yourself
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been very pleased with the apple magic mouse. I have never had any trouble getting my computer to recognize the mouse (I am using a 13'' alum Macbook- from before they switched these to "Pro"). I have no trouble getting the mouse to distinguish between left and right click and have had none of the tracking speed issues some other reviewers have noted (although I do set the tracking speed to the fastest setting).

I am most pleased with the scrolling with momentum feature. With this feature enabled, you can quickly scroll to any point in a long document or webpage. You can get from top to bottom or vise versa with 1-2 strong flicks of a finger (rather than several repeated scrolls as you would with a scroll wheel or even several two-finger drags on a laptop trackpad). For reference think about scrolling through a long music library on an iPod with a clickwheel, and how many circles you have to make with your thumb to get to the end of the alphabet, moving at a set rate. Compare this to the iPod touch which allows you to flick through large sections quickly or slowly based on your motion. The magic mouse brings this functionality to your desktop experience. I appreciate the saved time and fewer repetitive finger motions.

Besides that, some of the two-finger gestures on the mouse are kind of useful, swiping forward and backward through webpages for example.

I would almost knock off some points for the insanezoid packaging, but I am so happy with the mouse that I've almost forgotten the difficulty I had trying to open that little plastic box.

I can't yet comment on the battery life.

Customer Review: Works well in Snow Leopard, but if you lose swiping, I've got a fix...
Summary: 5 Stars

The mouse is great - it does have a low profile so I rest my wrist on my desk.

Great intuitive features, work well, unless you lose the swiping function which USE to happen every so often.

Two fixes for this:

* Temporary fix: log out, and back in - eventually you'll lose the swipe functions again

** Permanent fix (under Snow Leopard) - if you've upgraded from Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard), do a fresh install of Snow Leopard - this fixed it for me going on several weeks now.

How to do this?

1. Backup all your data/settings, Time Machine or Time Capsule are the best way to do this
2. Boot up the Snow Leopard install disk
3. Click on the Utilities menu bar and then select Disk Utility
4. Erase your primary disk (please, please remember to back up your data and settings before you do this!)
5. Exit Disk Utility
6. Install Snow Leopard
7. After the install is complete, you can then migrate your settings from the Time Machine or Time Capsule backup

Time to complete:

> Erase disk - if you don't zero out data, this takes only a minute or so
> Fresh install of Snow Leopard - 45 minutes or so
> Migrate your settings - 1-3 hours depending on the amount of data you've backed up

I realize this is a pain and Apple should come up with an update to fix the loss of swipe function, but I've found my system is more reliable, runs more efficiently/quickly, and gosh darn I feel good about a fresh install!

Customer Review: Style meets functionality
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used many mice in the past, from the basic ones that come with the computers all the way up to the Logitech MX Revolution. I didn't think I'd end up liking another mouse over the Revolution, but the Magic Mouse has managed to ascend to the throne. The mouse itself is stylish yet practical. I find that the touch features on the mouse feel very natural; it did not take me long at all to become adjusted to the mouse. Prior to this mouse, I was using a Mighty Mouse with my Mac (that refused to scroll down, which is why I ended up ordering this mouse) and was a bit worried about how I would get along without the squeeze buttons for Exposé, but I actually don't miss it much at all. The multitude of benefits offered by this mouse, most notably the drastically lighter weight, outweigh the lack of an Exposé button. I use the two finger swipes frequently in Safari. It hasn't confused any of my motions at all; both primary and secondary work as stated (unlike the not-so-Mighty Mouse), the momentum scrolling is very nice, and the two finger swipes work almost every time. I say almost because sometimes it doesn't fully recognize the swipe. My personal opinion is that the mouse should be a little bit wider to accommodate both fingers better. My only other complaint is that in iPhoto, the scrolling is a bit jagged, but everywhere else it runs very smoothly, so maybe it's just an iPhoto-specific issue. I would highly recommend this mouse to any Mac user who wants to take full advantage of their system. It's definitely worth the price.

Customer Review: I love this mouse!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have used a number of different mice and after several days of use I can say this is the best that I have ever used. I own and have used both of Apple's other currently available mice and this seems to overcome both of their shortcomings. The Apple Bluetooth Mighty Mouse never seemed to track accurately or consistently and suffered from intermittent signal loses. The Magic Mouse's tracking is perfect, though I thought the default setting was way too sluggish -- this was, however, easily adjusted via the settings pane. I also have not had a single signal problem despite the fact that I am using a MacPro; some people have reported problems with this combination but I certainly have yet to observe any issues. My other complaint with both the wired and Bluetooth Mighty Mice is that the small track ball ceased to work in both after about a month of use. With the Magic Mouse it does not appear that this can ever become an issue. So far the battery life seems pretty good for the Magic Mouse -- after four days of use Mac OS X reports the batteries have lost 6% of their life; based on this trend I expect that I will realize close to two months of use on a pair of batteries.

One thing that I have initially missed is the customizable auxiliary buttons on the Mighty Mice. Thanks to another Amazon reviewer, however, I think that that will be able to be more than compensated for with the free BetterTouchTool software that I just downloaded.

Customer Review: great product once I got used to it
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this for my brand new Mac Mini, the first Mac I've ever owned or used. The Mini is part of my entertainment center, so I had to have a wireless mouse to use from my armchair. Setup was nonexistent; I just turned it on and the Mac found it in seconds. Bluetooth means I'm not losing a USB port right out of the gate :). The rather large arm of my chair works just fine as a surface for it. I have yet to have any issue with it moving as desired. It's comfortable in my hand, and the touch scrolling feature immediately made a scrolling wheel seem obsolete. I did have to go to system preferences to activate right clicking, which works flawlessly. The lack of separate physical buttons has a significant advantage: the lack of a seam between them or a scrolling wheel eliminates a place for dirt to accumulate, meaning I haven't had to clean it yet. Two finger swiping to go back or forward on web pages is very useful compared to moving the cursor to the corresponding buttons every time. It requires just enough precision that I don't find myself accidentally doing it, but is still responsive. After using the magic mouse I wouldn't even consider going back to a traditional mouse. The price seemed a bit steep but considering how much time most people spend on their computer it's really worth it. In fact if my workplace wasn't PC I'd consider buying a second one.
