Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Magic Mouse

Customer Review: Great proof of concept mouse. Lovin it.
Summary: 5 Stars

Okay so the reason I got this mouse in the first place was to go along with my macbook pro-great computer btw-which I had just gotten a new display for. I also got a wireless keyboard and I was immediately impressed with how easy it was to use both from my bed without so much as a mousepad. I'm generally a pretty lazy person and this is awesome for me since lazer mouses don't work on some surfaces and ball mouses jam up. This mouse works fine on a wrinkly sheet or a solid glass table that would normally screw with lazer mouses, plus the design gives it a futuristic look and I can still use the same multitouch motions as I do on my built in trackpad. One thing I really liked is the right click function that is new to apple mouses, so that way I dont have to hold control when clicking. I would say the one downside is battery life, because unless you plan to use it 24-7 you probably want to turn it off when you're away since it still uses battery life. I would say I am not too battery wise, the opposite in fact and I have to replace the battery maybe once every month and a half to 2 months. Oh and a little advice: wait for your computer to log in fully before you try to connect it via bluetooth. It gets a bit glitchy if you try to use it before the systems set up.

Pros:
Use it anywhere, and on ANY surface.
Multitouch is awesome and fully integrated.
Nice design, looks cool
Completely wireless
Easy set up, pretty compatible

Cons:
Not exactly energy efficient, battery life not the best
Be sure you don't leave it on and upside down while you're surfing the web. :)
Dependent on the computers bluetooth connection

The bottom line: Awesome. If you're a mac lover and you want a mouse that works anywhere, this is it. Use it on your lap, your bed, the carpet, etc. As for me, its definitely a keeper, at least until the magic mouse 2.0.

Customer Review: Apple finally makes a decent mouse
Summary: 5 Stars

Let's face it, the predecessor Mighty Mouse was absolute junk. I've lost track of how many Mighty Mouses I've had to replace via AppleCare, since the Mightly Mouse scroll wheel would frequently only last a few weeks before breaking. I finally resorted to using a non-Apple mouse on most of our Macs.

The Magic Mouse seems to address the biggest problem of the Mighty Mouse by just throwing out the wheel altogether. Smart move.

I was helping set up a new iMac recently and was anxious about the potential learning curve of the new Magic Mouse. No learning curve; it works exactly as how you would expect it to.

My only criticism is that I had a lot of trouble right clicking with it (note that you have to enable right clicking in System Preferences before it will work at all), and I eventually gave up and resorted to Control-Click for right click.

If you don't mind Control-Click for right click (disable right click in System Preferences, Mouse, if you will simply use Control-Click), then I can recommend this mouse. But if easy right click is a must have, then try it out in a store first and make sure you can can easily right click this mouse (I could not).

If this is your first wireless mouse, note that the Mouse option in System Preferences adds a battery meter that tells you how much battery you have remaining in your Mouse (same for wireless keyboard). Great idea! I hope/assume that there is also an alert that tells you when the battery is getting low, but I was not able to confirm this. If you know, please add a comment to this review to inform whether or not there is a low battery alert within the OS for this mouse.

Finally, just be careful what you pay, as some third party sellers are taking advantage of perceived low supply.

Customer Review: Its not hype if its true
Summary: 5 Stars

I am using my Magic Mouse as I write this and am reminded of something my best friend said to me years ago after he'd bought a BMW. "Eric, its not hype if its true!" Well, that phrase can easily apply to the Apple Magic Mouse. Its been billed as a revolution in mouse technology and that is as exact a description as one could hope to get. Out of the box, the device is simple and elegant - a tiny curved wedge, with a grey Apple logo at one end. Plain white, with a glossy surface, it looks terrific on the desktop next to my Apple Keyboard. And on the surface, it does everything that a point and click mouse does - that is, it points, and it clicks. But - no buttons on the surface, as the mouse itself is one great big button, with a touch sensitive surface for added functionality. As I am writing this, I'm switching between several webpages in my browser, simply by swiping two fingers on the surface of the mouse. Turning pages with a gesture identical to turning a page in a book. Earlier today, I was working on an image in Photoshop - I was able to zoom into and out of the image simply by holding the option key on my keyboard and sliding my finger up and down the mouse. The scaling is precise and smooth, unlike the other methods available for scaling. With the standard mouse software, the MM was a bit sluggish, but if you download MagicPrefs from this site: [...] you'll be able to customize the mouse in ways that are nothing short of remarkable. I loved the Mac Mighty Mouse too (many of my coworkers revile the thing, but I was quite happy with it!) The Magic Mouse makes the older model look like a stone hammer by comparison. For working with image editing and word processing programs as often as I do, the Magic Mouse is the perfect control tool! Apple hits another home run.

Customer Review: *** An Up-to-Date Review!! ***
Summary: 5 Stars

I call this an Up-to-Date review because so many of the comments already posted complain about features of the magic mouse that have already been fixed with some amazing third-party software (freeware). Let me elaborate!

First, many of the reviews say that you have only two mouse buttons; right and left. They say that you cannot middle click. Not so anymore! Using Magicprefs (freeware, third-party software), you can setup a middle click that works flawlessly. As a Firefox user myself, I am always middle clicking. Using Magicprefs, I can middle click to my heart's content.

Next, people have complained that it lacks all the additional buttons that many other mice have. Fortunately, Magicprefs let's you setup different click combinations that will do different things. For example, I have setup a "three finger click" to bring up Spaces and allow me to quickly switch between desktop. Further, a single-finger tap on the Apple logo brings up Expose. Then there are all the swipes that I can do as well.

Now, one real limitation of the mouse is this: you cannot press the right and left mouse key together. Essentially there is still one mouse button; the software just senses where you press on the mouse to determine a left or right click. I realize this is needed in many video games, so be aware that this will cause frustration and you will need to develop a work-around (or have a gaming mouse, like I do).

In sum, for day-to-day computer use, this is the best mouse I have ever owned. This mouse is still relatively new and I am encouraged by the software that is already coming out that will help us maximize our experience with the Magic Mouse. I think this mouse is just going to get better and better with time.

Customer Review: Don't worry about the low profile! It's an advantage when using the touch feature
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently switched from a PC to a MacBook Pro. My favorite mouse for my PC has been the Logitec MX Revolution, which has a very high profile. At first, I read somewhere that the new mouse from Apple had a very low profile which caused the reviewer to not like it.

My experience is exactly the opposite, and the reason is because the mouse is the combination of a track pad and a mouse! I don't like trackpads typically, because I like to move the cursor with a mouse. However, with the new Magic Mouse, I still move the cursor with the mouse, but actually SCROLL up and down on a website with my finger touching it's back. If the profile were any taller, this would not work as well. I also use two finger touch to go backward or forward on a website.

So, don't worry about the low profile - it's actually a plus!

Don't forget that if you have an Apple store near you, you can try it out first. And, the price here is ridiculous - it's only $69 from Apple. So I would not purchase it from this seller.

If you need to save a little more, use the search engine Bing ([...]), and search for Magic Mouse. You will find it as low as $64, and some of the merchants participate in Bing's cashback program, where you will see that you can save anywhere from 2-4% off of that price.

When I bought my MacBook Pro, I used Bing's search engine, and it showed up on on eBay, and following the link from Bing and using the "by it now" ebay process, I saved 10%. Because my MBP was a little over $2k, I saved $200. It took 60 days for the funds to be returned to my checking account from PayPal. Pretty cool.
