Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple MA711LL/A TV with 40GB Hard Drive [OLD VERSION]Customer Review: Apple TV - A Great Media Storage and Instant Gratification Device Summary: 5 Stars
Apple TV is a happy invention and I'll try to explain why: in an era when a great number of people have access to broadband Internet and consequently to digital entertainment instantly delivered to computers, a set top box which is sleek and that can store one's favorite video library, eliminating the necessity for extra space to store DVDs and other types of media just bring us more convenience than we have ever had.
In terms of ease of use, I really have nothing to complain of. As just any product we plug in for the first time, it takes some time and patience to figure out the way it works. I took a little more than one hour to have everything on and functioning.
Basically video is not yet of a hi-def quality because files that are downloadable via iTunes Store are relatively small in size, since they were first conceived to work with the iPod small-sized and computer screens only. But still they are clear enough for a pleasant watching.
One small technical point that must be addressed: some air openings in order to avoid excessive heat would be more than welcome. I must admit that I become a little scared every time I put my hands on it.
The WiFi feature which is intended to allow content synchronization and video streaming from a computer to the television (including YouTube content) is a great advantage. I hope that soon new features will be made available so we can enjoy Live TV and On Demand streamings from the Internet directly sent to our TV sets.
Apple, as usual, did an excellent job with Apple TV. Five Stars!!!
Customer Review: Delightful Addition to my iTunes Products Summary: 5 Stars
First of all, the 40Gig version was annoying primarily because of the small hard drive. I purchased the 160Gig and am delighted with that.
The AppleTV runs VERY Hot. Plan to put it on TOP of your last device as it needs to have the top open to air. I'm wondering if Apple has a problem here but time will tell. I purchased the extended warranty primarily because I'm concerned about this issue.
The one annoying thing about this device is that you can't just drag and drop stuff to it. You have to either Sync to ONE computer with iTunes or else use streaming for up to 4 more iTunes computers. I'm running two iTunes Macs and 1 iTunes PC. It would nice to be able to shut off syncing and still be be able to just drag and drop what you want to it the way you can with an iPod. There is a method for deciding what you want to sync and not sync but it's poorly designed and you may find yourself doing a lot of clicking to select what you want and deselect what you don't.
I'm using the device on a 1080i wide screen TV. Most of the movies I am using have been converted using the Cucusoft version 2 and 6 software for the iPod. I'm very happy with the results!!! It's been very handy to take 50 or 60 movies on a USB2 hard drive when I travel. Most of the time I just watch them in a window on my laptop anyway so the quality if outstanding. On the AppleTV it's somewhat lower than one might expect from DVD but the convenience is worth it.
Overall, it's a delightful product!!
Customer Review: The Best Way to Use Your iTunes Library Summary: 5 Stars
I first ordered my Apple TV as soon as it was announced by Apple. Although the original software was lacking, it has been much improved since then and has so far been free updates. Apple still has a few improvements that they need to make, but the software is very good as it is.
My wife and I use our Apple TV all the time to rent HD movies, buy TV seasons or individual shows, watch and listen to video/ audio podcasts, make purchases from the iTunes store, and of course to listen to music through our HD TV and home stereo. I have transfered my CD collection to iTunes, so from my Apple TV I'm able to select all of my playlists like a big jukebox!
I also love looking at my iPhoto albums on my HD TV via the Apple TV. The pictures are just beautiful and it really improves over just having to look at your digital photo collection on your computer.
I'll note that I am running my Apple TV on a full 802.11n wireless network, which is much faster for transferring large video files to and from the Apple TV. I really do recommend that you upgrade your network to the WiFi "n" standard (especially get a new dual-band WiFi hub like Apple's Time Capsule).
If you also have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you will also want to download the free Apple Remote App that connects to the Apple TV through your wireless network. That way you can control the Apple TV from anywhere in your house (or WiFi network).
Also be sure to buy the 160 gig version for the added space.
Customer Review: as good as advertised, wonderful picture quality on my TV Summary: 5 Stars
Apple TV performs exactly as promised, allowing the user to play iTunes media on a TV. Most people will use it for watching downloaded iTunes television programs or films. In my case I've been living overseas for the past nine years, so I've become very dependent on iTunes to keep up with programs such as 24, Lost, Heros, and Battlestar Galactica to name a few. While I was content to watch shows on my MacBook, I was longing to watch them on a normal TV. It was especially difficult when my wife and I scrunched together on the sofa to watch our favorite shows. We're probably among the minority who actually bought a new TV for our Apple TV (our old one was not compatible). The need for a more current TV is perhaps a consideration for some as they decide whether or not to purchase an Apple TV. The picture from the Apple TV is outstanding on our LCD television. While it's not HD, it's still very crisp and clean. As with almost all Apple products, Apple TV is extremely simple to set up and use. If you know how to Sync an iPod on iTunes, you should have no problem using Apple TV. Initial setup involves only a few very simple steps. My only issue is that Apple ought to have included larger hard drive. Other than this small issue I am extremely pleased with my Apple TV. I highly recommend it to people who watch a lot of things from iTunes on their computer and would like to see them on a television.
Customer Review: one of the apples best but yet underrated Summary: 5 Stars
This stuff is simply amazing. With just one wire (hdmi) you could bring all your photos, music, youtube and dvd collection to your beautiful tv. I love the simplicity and the quality of this product. If you are not a techie i'd recommend getting a 160gb hard disk. 40 is too title if you want to keep a decent dvd library available all the time. Streaming video is still buggy and it'll drop itunes connection more often than you think :). I am soon going to upgrade the hard drive by myself, an extra 100$ could get me a 500 gb. I won't recommend this hack if you are not a techie. Also if you are waiting for a new update to this device then i'd say don't bother. I has everything you need for future. Only thing that is lacking is content.
Best things - photos, music, you tube and very little cable.
Things that could improve - itunes streaming - come on apple it's not that hard, 160 standard hard drive at the same price, ability to buy hd movies from itunes and album art work for ripped dvd and yes SUBTITLES support please..
BTW if you are planning to install boxee, i'd say stay away, It's very buggy, the content you get is crap. If content gets good, i am sure apple'd be the 1st to give you a nice and simple interface so that you can enjoy the show rather than fiddle with the technology :)..my 2 cents.
