Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard MB110LL/ACustomer Review: Great keyboard! Compliments the Mac Mini nicely. No problem for a touch typist. Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a Mac Mini recently, and I've been looking for a matching keyboard to go with it. The design and build is sturdy and well put together. I've owned it since November 2009.
Cleaning it isn't too bad if you keep your hands clean to some extent before using it. I never got around cleaning it yet, but running a cue-tip around each key should be the most sensible way to clean around it. Can't really say what will happen if you get it through the narrow crevices between the keys and the innards of the keyboard.
For those of you used to the regular Windows keyboards, the button setup is different on an Apple keyboard. New buttons to get used to are the Option and Command buttons. What this keyboard lacks are buttons such as insert, PrtScrn, Pause, the Windows button, and Num Lock.
As a touch typist, I was skeptical at first from the flat chiclet keys. I typically type at around 70-80WPM, and the first few days I was lagging around 40-50. I gave it a week or two of typing, and I am now typing at my fastest speed. It just takes a little getting used to, is all. Also, the keys are quiet while typing.
I would have chosen the wireless Apple keyboard, but they only had the weird tiny version. I wish they made a wireless version of this one with the numeric keypad, but a USB version is fine too.
Customer Review: Quite Possibly the best out there!!! Summary: 5 Stars
As a medical student with a PhD, I do a lot of typing. (Why, in fact I even typed this review).
I absolutely ADORE this keyboard!!! I touch type at about 40-60 wpm depending on hangover status (remember, I'm a student) and this keyboard feels absolutely wonderful. The keys, while shallow, offer great response and tactile feel. Thank Goodness that Apple finally labeled the command and control keys... I have been messing those up for a while now.
Now, I own this particular keyboard, the one with 10-key number input. I first bought the abbreviated smaller version, without any of the extra arrow buttons or 10-key pad.... and I hated it. Although it is almost exactly like the feel of a Macbook... it just looked ugly to me. It was too small... it looked out of place (although almost all keyboard are probably too oversized but that's beside my point). Anyway, I took it back and got this one and it's absolutely perfect. I am a Mac user who converted from PC's a couple years ago. I've had a number of different keyboards but I become hooked on Macs when I first typed on a friend's Macbook.... it was like a dream. Now the only test will be to see if this holds up. I've had my MB for more than two years now and the keyboard is fine so I'm expecting long life out of this one as well.
Customer Review: Someone at Apple must be a darn good typist. Summary: 5 Stars
And that person must have had a lot to say about the design of the latest Apple keyboard.
At first glance, it looks like a touch typist's nightmare. It's too flat! The keys barely move! Where's the tactile feedback I need to get up to speed?
I scoffed when I first laid eyes upon it, but after a few minutes with one at an Apple retail store, I was hooked. While the profile of the keyboard is low and lean, the keys and their spacing are generous enough for big shovel hands like mine. The touch is reminiscent of a good electric typewriter, not mushy and uncertain like so many "quiet" keyboards. The keys can't bind against each other and the space between them prevents cruddy build-up.
Since it's also the stock keyboard for the new aluminum iMac, the keyboard provides USB 2.0 support for low power and externally powered devices when connected to other computers, including the white plastic iMac, any MacBook, the Mac mini and the Mac Pro. That won't be a big issue for most users who plug a mouse or trackball into the keyboard. You'll still need to plug your iPod directly into a USB port on the computer.
One more thing. . .
Apple has finally labeled the Command key with its name in addition to that mysterious cloverleaf symbol.
Customer Review: Fantastic typing comfort! Summary: 5 Stars
Apple's new keyboard design is so much more than just good looks. I spend most of the day at my computer, and I can't get over how much more comfortable it is to use this keyboard.
The actual key-press is shorter -- the key travels less distance up and down -- yet, the tactile feedback is such that you don't get the feeling you're using a laptop keyboard. The pressure required to press the key is perfect -- I don't accidentally double-tap keys, but I don't have to pound them either.
Also, the keyboard is so flat that I discarded my foam wrist rest, and can rest my entire forearm on the desk in front of the keyboard and type in ergonomic bliss.
The keyboard's two USB ports are USB 2.0, though they do note that if you plug in high-power devices such as an iPod, you must have an aluminum-finish new iMac or better.
Some of the Apple-specific keys have been relocated or reassigned, which takes some getting used to, but overall the layout's better I think -- the volume keys (which I use constantly) are now right over the delete key, so you don't have to reach over to the numeric keypad to hit them. I also used to bump the eject key all the time with my mouse cord when it was right on the outer corner, and now that's over by the delete key too.
Customer Review: Works amazingly well Summary: 5 Stars
I was skeptical. Surely something so flat and thin could not type well. But I had managed to dump a cola into my old white Apple keyboard, rendering it into a crusty sticky mess, so I said what the heck, it's just a keyboard and if it doesn't work I will get another one.
So how does it work? GREAT! I've been touch typing for over 25 years now and while this isn't the *best* keyboard I've ever used, it's certainly a good one. The keys have enough travel and feedback that you know when you've done the keypress but don't require so much effort as to make typing a chore. The spacing is excellent. I *never* hit the wrong key. Never. Do you know how unusual that is with the typical pathetic mess that passes as a "computer keyboard" nowdays?! And you can plug your mouse or mouse fob into the keyboard to reduce the number of wires going to your computer, it comes with two low-power USB ports too.
My only beef: It isn't lighted, so it's hard to use in a dark room. I must admit that I've become addicted to the lighted keyboard on the Macbook Pro, it makes typing in the dark easy. Still, until Apple releases a lighted keyboard this is the best keyboard I've found thus far for my Mac. It works *much* better than it looks like it should...
