Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple AirPort Extreme Dual-band Base Station MB763LL/A [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Works Great. Easy setup
Summary: 5 Stars

This thing was incredibly easy to set up. Follow the step by step setup to password-protect your main and guest network. Plug in your USB hub, plus printers and USB drives, and tell the router whether to password protect your printers and drives, and whether to allow guests to use them.

Plug in a drive and it appears on your desktop for server use, or for use with the Time Machine backup feature. Plug in a printer and tell your mac to look for it, and it's easily available in all of your programs.

The price of this item is pretty scary, but it works so well that I don't regret the purchase one bit.

I haven't tested the range, but the speed is great. I have a DSL connection that tests at 5Mbps wired via ethernet, and I get that full speed in every room in my house via the wireless N connection.

The only trouble I had with it was the fact that the documentation doesn't say anywhere that macs can't read NTFS-formated drives wirelessly via this router. I had to call Apple tech support to learn this. If you wish to share the same USB drive wirelessly with this router between a Windows machine and a Mac, you must format it for a FAT32 file system.

Customer Review: Excellent Stability and Speed
Summary: 5 Stars

Compared to an old D-Link DI-524 Wireless 54 Mbps High Speed Router (802.11g), this Apple product is more stable. I have yet to experience disconnects with the wireless connections even if the devices connected are downloading large files.

There seems to be an improvement in download speeds even from wireless devices. Not sure what caused the old router to not be as fast as this new one when the Internet connection (a DSL connection) is not any faster than regular Ethernet. Using speedtest.net, I get pretty much the full throughput of my DSL link unlike with the D-Link.

Printing through this router is functional and good. My PCs and Macs work well with the printer, an HP Photosmart D7360 Printer, although I seem unable to query the ink levels as I could when the printer was connected directly to the Mac via USB.

One annoyance is that whenever you change a setting, you need to reboot the router.

Customer Review: great
Summary: 5 Stars

I am surrounded by 20+ wireless g routers in my apartment building, and when a new neighbor moved in and set up his wireless network right next to my own, along probably with 20+ 2.4Ghz phones, my 5yr old wireless g router just couldn't handle it anymore. I purchased Apple's AirPort Extreme Dual-band Base Station and it works great -- on my PC network (I don't have Apple computers). I am the only one so far with a wireless N in my area, and I've noticed improved response times in playing online games and downloading video via roku.

Caveat: if you are going to connect this on a cable modem, you need to turn the cable modem off first, connect the router then turn both the modem and router on. It took me 2 hours to figure this out. I was confused because Linksys routers have a MAC address clones capability and Apple routers do not, and I kept looking for the MAC clone setup on the Apple router -- wasn't there. Turning off the cable modem, and turning it back on once the Apple router was attached solved whatever connection problem I was having with my ISP.

Customer Review: It works....period.

We bought this two weeks ago after our 2yr old Linksys WRT54G started acting up. After I did my last hard-reset on the Linksys, we finally gave up and decided to get a better wireless router.

One of the best things about this router is that it is a "dual band" type of router, meaning you get full backward compatibility with 802.11G items while using your newer 802.11N items on the same network. I loved this.

So far, we've not had any problems with it and it offers very fast network access. I'm very pleased with it.

Customer Review: Great Router, pricey but GREAT
Summary: 5 Stars

I've owned a Lynksys router a D-Link and a Net Gear. After one year the Lynksys started dropping the wired internet connection on a regular basis, then died. The D-Link died slightly out of warranty. And the Net Gear's power supply died one year out of warranty. I purchased a generic power supply from Radio Shack and its been more reliable than the Net Gears.
Ok now about the Airport. Its expensive though cheaper than three other brand unreliable routers. I kept trying to avoid buying an Airport because of its price. Well I've learned my lesson. I waited almost a year before writing this review. This Apple Airport Extreme has been the Best, Fastest, most Reliable router I have ever owned. Having a Dual Band "N"/"G" so the "G" channel doesn't slow down the "N" channel is wonderful. The worst thing I can say about the AAE is that it runs a little hot to the touch and the Wi-Fi performance could be a little stronger.
If you've been thinking about an AAE, stop thinking and get one, you WON'T been sorry.
