Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station MB053LL/A [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Great as usual!
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had the router almost a year. I use it with a Nintendo Wii, Macbook and several other devices including a G1 phone, Sony PSP, Ipod Touch and several non Mac computers. The router has NEVER, repeat NEVER needed a reboot. It runs in mixed mode to support N/B/G wireless connections and is FAST. There are VERY few configuration settings that you need to tweak, which was almost disappointing at first, but very typical of Apple. Like most products from Cupertino, it is as close to plug and play as a router can get. The router's connection works throughout the house, basement and guest house as well as when sitting in a car parked on the street. On a typical night, this router is handling World of Warcraft, a movie on Hulu, surfing on the G1 and god only knows what else on the rest of the devices all at the same time, flawlessly.

Customer Review: So Far, So Good
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this unit because of how easy Apple products are to set up. I have a brand new Dell 1720 w/Vista and the network connected right away...I know nothing about setting up networks...but with a little computer intuition, I got through it. Connecting my WD 500GB External Drive was another story, but this is because Apple doesn't mention that external drives MUST be formated as FAT32 and NOT NTFS, which my drive was. Since the Extreme wasn't recognizing my external drive as NTFS, I had to transfer all my file to the laptop, and then reformat the WD drive as FAT32, but only after downloading some software from WD to get it back to a single FAT32 drive. I wish Apple would state that the Extreme will not recognize NTFS to begin with. Other than that, it's great, fast and nice looking.

Customer Review: Finally caved and bought this after many others
Summary: 5 Stars

I simply could not bring myself to pay the extra for this router. I continuously had issues with the routers that I tried requiring frequent restarts. The one that came with FIOS (restarted once a week), dlink (restarted at least once a month), and Netgear (do these work longer than 3 months). So far it has been 6 months, and this thing is rock solid. I have restarted it 2 times and one was for an update. After initial positive experience, I pushed it and added an external hard drive for Time Machine backups. From my reading, I expected this to cause issues. To my surprise, it still just worked well. Backups just worked well.

In short, this has been a great experience, and I am more likely to get another Apple Wireless router because it is easy to setup and just works well.

Customer Review: Airport Extreme
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the Extreme to replace my old linksys for my wireless PC. I have a Toshiba net book and a Sony VIAO laptop, an HP all in one and an HP color laser, and a WD 1 terabyte external hard drive. All work flawlessly with this unit. I print wirelessly, back-up wirelessly, and even installed win7 pro on my net book wirelessly from the DVD drive in my VIAO! The unit is recognized and linked almost instantly when I power up and the data rate is faster than imagined. I had a few hic-ups on installation, but after getting use to it, no problems at all. Next I want to see how I can connect to the hard drive from a remote location....from school or the coffee shop. It was pricey, but I tried the Cisco whatever and returned it the next day, so for me the price was worth it! BUY IT!

Customer Review: super great fantastic the best
Summary: 5 Stars

I have two of these and printing works flawlessly with bonjour, and I have easily config from mac or hp pavillion with XP pack 2. No drop outs at all, and replaces the dlinks I had. Three macs, six PCs, two airport express, and multiple printers. Most of the drop outs when I had the dlinks, running were from ATT/sbc/yahoo/dsl. When I switched to the airport, everything ran smoothly and easlily. Great router and not very hot at all, very easy to configure. I had to remove a gateway that would send its router signal to the whole system when it would loose it from the dsl company and confuse the whole system. With that removed, every bit moves better than ever before. I am waiting for the next version that can do double dual band at the same time. Don't use WEP ever!
