Customer Review: Fast, simple, capable wireless network device

I bought my first Apple AirPort Extreme Base Station to replace my wireless base station (802.11b) as the old one could not reach the part of my house where I usually wanted network coverage. The Extreme covers my whole house and I get a strong, useful signal everywhere (even outside on my patio) and fast data rates. Using my MacBook Pro, which has 802.11n built-in, I can now transfer multi-Gigabyte files (iMovies) and do hard disk backups over the wireless network at the same speed I could over the wired Fast Ethernet (100 MB/sec)!
I bought the second Apple Airport Extreme Base Station, now with a Gigabit Ethernet port (10 times faster than my Fast Ethernet network), for my son, as he lives in a house with other college students, as they were unable to get a wireless network they bought (a bit cheaper!) to work. Now their Macs & PCs are very happy, and they were able to hook up a printer to it (via it's USB) & now have a wireless print server!
My biggest negative was reading recently that Apple's Leopard (OS X 10.5) Time Machine software will not be able to backup to an attached hard disk to the AirPort Extreme's USB port. Sounds picky, but with Apple, you get used to everything working seamlessly together.

Apple Airport is the best choice if you are looking to upgrade/replace your existing router. I currently use Verizon Fios as my ISP. The wireless router that they give you leaves much to be desired. It would constantly drop the connection on my iPad. After doing some research, I found that the Airport had some of the highest ratings of any access point/router. Setup is a snap. Just take the network cable from your cable modem and plug it into the back of your new Airport device, along with the power cord. Insert the included CD into your computer (works great on both PC and Mac machines) and follow the setup.
One of the great features about this device is the ability to create both a private and guest network. Lets say you run a business out of your home, and have several PCs/Macs on the network. You may want to give your visitors access to the internet, but not access to your private network. Simply give your visitors the password for your guest network and they can access the internet without being able to see/access any of the other computers in your home.
The gigabit ports in the back of the device are also very helpful, especially if you backup large files.

I love the speed and range of this unit and it seems to work flawlessly. I also appreciate the fact that it has three ethernet ports (compared to one in the older airports) in case I want to wire the router directly to other computers.
The unit works flawlessly and is easy to set up with the included software except for one caveat: the wireless signal wasn't very strong at first until I switched the airport over as a bridge unit (serving my dsl router) during setup as opposed to being a freestanding router. That way it's working in synch with your dsl/cable router as opposed to projecting a competing signal. Now I get full bars in the airport indicator on my mac on the other side of the house.
I hooked up a usb hub (with a printer connected to it) and can send jobs to the printer from any computer in the house. If you connect a hard drive to the hub you can also use it as a network server, but the wireless connection speed is fairly pokey compared to a direct hookup, so I wouldn't recommend transferring large files. I was currently running a couple of AP expresses for my network as well as a 4 port switch, this thing has made an excellent addition to my network. Right now I have two printers and two external hard drives hooked up to this thing using a powered USB hub. I have two macs that are using the HDDs as time capsules for wireless backup as well as a Wii, Xbox and 360, PS3, iTouch, iPhone and a couple other wireless devices, this thing handles them all.
+ Ease of use is what makes this thing so great, lots of plug and play things with not too much network knowledge needed
+ Time Capsule support!
+ A USB hub makes it support multiple drives/printers
+ Can be easily extended with an APEXP
+ Easily the nicest looking piece of networking equipment on the planet
+ Single LED light is very easy to understand and acts the same as an APEXP
+ 802.11n
- No Airtunes support
- Power cable is waaay too long, possible 12ft with 6ft of cable on each side of the brick
- A three port hub, WTF?
- No Airtunes, I really love this feature

First, I have to comment about another reviewers statement that the Airport doesnt work with XP SP2. I set it up wirelessly for my wifes Dell that has XP SP2 on it and have no problems whatsoever. The setup was simple and as with most Apple products it walks you through the process and I had her computer up and running within 10 minutes. If you need to share a (PC) printer through the Airport, it includes Bonjour software which will walk you through the set up process for a pc and in an additional 10 minutes she was printing from the Airport as well. If you have a Mac it's even simpler. The data throughput is exceptional and I have never had a problem with a sluggish connection. The range is also pretty impressive as my wife will sometimes go out on the deck (the Airport is on the second floor on the opposite side of the house) and has never had a problem. I recently switched to this router after using a another "n" router and had quite a few problems with it. The Airport is the type of device that Microsoft has never mastered...a true plug and play device.
