Digital Cameras Photo Reviews of Apple AirPort Express with Air Tunes M9470LL/A [OLD VERSION]

Customer Review: Apple AirPort Express Works Great with Windows XP
Summary: 5 Stars

I found this product to work well with MS Windows XP and the set up was quite easy. I have WEP 128 bit encryption on a Linksys 54G Wireless router. First off I downloaded the newest Firmware for the unit and then got the latest Admin utility from the website. I have found that for any computer electronics that you are trying to set up with your computer it pays to get the latest versions from the web. It is never worth wasting time on the software that comes with products. If there is a newer version on line that fixes any bugs, that is vital to solving the problems most users have when trying to use the packaged software.

I plugged in the unit, went to the configuration utility and in the "AirPort" tab made all the necessary changes. Set up the Wireless security key, changed the format to HEX, changed the units password from the default, saved it all as a profile then "updated" the profile so it works. Takes about 3 minutes to do. Once you hit "Update" it took about 60-90 seconds for the green light to come on and it was working. I have this plugged in to an outlet in my living room and it keeps the 2.4GHz cordless phone from disconnecting us when we are online. It is great. Can not wait to try it travelling.

Customer Review: Some notes on Mac OS 9
Summary: 5 Stars

If you read up on this, you'll know that the wireless router feature works with Mac OS 9 but that you cannot *configure* the device from OS 9. The other features only work with OS X or WinXP/2000. Fair enough.
I'm planning to upgrade from Mac OS 9 soon, but am not quite ready.
I wanted the router to at least have some security (default is none, but you can set it up for WEP or WPA), so I used an XP laptop that had a wireless card. Note: During configuration, the firewall I had enabled in WinXP seemed to screw up part of the communication with the router. I was unable to commit changes until I turned off the firewall, but as soon as I did, the airport express was able to save its settings. As long as you know the settings you want, you don't have to be on your local network when you configure it, and you can even set up profiles.
At home, I was running OS 9.1 and the original airport software. Had to update OS to 9.2 and airport software to 2.04, then the device worked fine, and with WEP 128-bit security enabled.
I think you could probably just use the default settings (without doing any configuration) and get it to work with OS 9, but then you would have a wide-open router.

Customer Review: My life is much easier these days...because of my Airport...
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read some of the other reviews in this space, and they do appear mixed. I can only offer my experience with this product, which has been absolutely spectacular. I have a G4 Powerbook, a printer, the airport express, and two toddlers. What the wireless capabilities have done is make my house much more enjoyable to all of my family. I keep my Powerbook on my coffee table, my printer on the top of my stereo unit. My oldest daughter, 4 years old right now, can walk up to my laptop, turn it on, click on her Barbie.com shortcut on the desktop, and print out new coloring sheets for her and her younger sister. Then, while they color, with a couple of clicks, she can play any of her music from iTunes. With everything so accessible, my daughters are becoming more computer literate, and have very little interest in watching TV anymore, and there are no wires traipsing across the house. And as far as ease of use? I had it up and running in less than 5 minutes, without ever looking at the manual. After being a PC person until just two years ago, these are the exact reasons that I converted to the Mac world. This is just another great product by the people at Apple.

Customer Review: It's simple: It works great.
Summary: 5 Stars

For the past year, I've been complaining about the options for getting music from my computer to my living room stereo. It's too far to run a cable, but all the wireless options had drawbacks. They either cost $300, or forced you to use their mediocre music management software, or required you to browse through your music on a tiny readout, or on a TV that I don't have in my living room.

I was frustrated, because all I wanted was a simple device that would replace the cable. I simply wanted to hit "play" on the computer, and hear music on the stereo. That's not a lot to ask, but no one could do it for me.

Until Apple came out with this little beauty. It is working great. Yes, I had some difficulty configuring it, but I guess it's my fault. I wish I had a Mac, which would make it really easy. Even if I had Windows XP it would have been easy. But I'm still stuck with Win2000, which is supported by the software, but is a little trickier to setup. Excellent customer service via telephone solved my problem, and now I'm playing music the way I always dreamed of. THIS is one of the reasons my next computer will be made by Apple.

Customer Review: Five Stars for ease of installation...
Summary: 5 Stars

Reviewed only as a wireless base station, this unit is very easy to install and use, and its transmission speed is comparable with the bigger Apple Extreme unit...almost. The AirPort Express can also be used as a sub-transmitter booster with other AirPort Express units or with the AirPort Extreme. It can be used as a wireless receiver for properly equipt stereo units or as the receiver for a wirless printer setup. I bought it to use when I travel because it's easy to setup with an alternate I.D. in remote locations with up to five alternate profiles. Be sure, after the unit is properly installed, using Apple's AirPort Setup Assistant, to use the AirPort Admin Utility to make further settings of the unit, including making sure it is running at maximum speed and with the Robustness setting on to overcome other signals from some wireless phones (those that also run at 2.4 MHz), from other networks (in apartment buildings), and microwave ovens...! The documentation is good, and there is additional help at www.apple.com/airport . I used LinkSys equipment for years with PCs, and the AirPort units are definitely easier, in the Apple environment, to install and use.
